  • The FN M3M (GAU-21) is a .50 caliber (12.7x99mm) single barrel rapid-fire machine gun suitable for rotary-wing aircraft applications providing defensive firepower ranging out to nearly 2000 meters. The FN M3M was designated by the U.S. Navy as the GAU-21 in 2004 and is currently used by all services within the U.S. Department of Defense. An evolution of the M3 .50-caliber heavy machine gun, it produces a blistering 1,100 rounds per minute cyclic rate of fire through the use of open-bolt operation and a dual recoil buffer system. Operating independent of either electrical or hydraulic power sources, the FN M3M/GAU-21’s unique soft mount system enhances weapon accuracy and minimizes the firing vibration transmitted to the airframe.

Its an outgrowth of the old M-3 Aircraft version of the M2. The Ma Deuce has been able to throw 1200RPM since the 30s. This is just the newest one.

All the machine gun show in this video are not Gau21…the machine gun with standard cooking handle is not an open bold one that means it’s Gau18 or another M3AN configuration

Aw ... No tracers?Imagine aP-51 with six of these ... Or a P-47 Thunderbolt with EIGHT; or a B-25J "Gunship" with 12 of 'em ...

There's a "Multi-purpose" round that serves the purpose. It's AP-explosive w/tracer, unless they got rid of the tracer part in the new version.

This was originally designed for aircraft in WW2. There were development delays I presume. It had reliability issues.

They should put this on the M1 replacement.

It's no match against the Russian NSV, Dushka and the Russian kpv heavy machine, which is capable of firing a devastating 14.5mm caliber rounds.
Go Russia love from India 🇮🇳

Incorrect , the barrel life isn’t 10k rounds , think about it , it fires @ 1000 rpm ! So after a string of 10 minutes of intermittent fire your barrels destroyed ? Mag capacity is 600 rounds normally with 4 reloads per aircraft.

I shot this gun in a H60R and I’ll say. Even though it’s a fun gun to shoot on a good day. It had a lot of problems. Honestly the M240 is a better gun in my opinion. It just felt more reliable and accurate for what we were doing.

All the high ROF brownings are difficult to maintain. The aircraft versions of the .30 cal were notoriously difficult to keep running at a stated ROF of 12-1500 in WW2. The aircraft an/m2 50 cal ram up to 850.
All of this leaves me wondering why the electric GAU 19 isn’t better in every way.

-- We got our pick of the litter in SOC. Picked the M-60 for most mounted applications. This was late 90s so they weren't standard issue, but there were plenty around.

This is 6000 sec when you now that the rate of fire is 1100 rds/min max : 18 rds/sec this is a lot of target you can engage and an huge probability to hit👍😉

It seems like not a lot, even though it is. Less than 10 minutes of fire will destroy it. How many outings. My car gives me a miles and a date. How many operations. Like how much ammo do they even carry.
