- Want to know the biggest regrets of our van build? What aspects of van life we hate? Or the most frustrating part of living in a tiny home?
In today's video, we explain the 5 things I hate about my van with the intention of showing you the aspects of our build that didn't end up working out how we had hoped. Obviously, we love almost everything about our van, but if we had a time machine, these would be some things we'd like to go back and fix. This way if you're about get started building your own van hopefully you can learn from our mistakes.
Big hugs,
Dana

youtube: heres van life videos for ur entire recommended section!
(not complaining, its super interesting! but dang youtube’s aggressive w the suggestions)
Just a mental fellow ive been on youtube for years! i don’t remember it being this aggressive before lol
Haley Christine the same thing happened to me. I rewatched an Elsa Rhae video and all the sudden “VANS VAN CONVERSION SUPER EASY SUPER HARD BLAH BLAH BLAH”
Just a mental fellow hahah, welcome to the club!!!
Cause your name is van
Insane clips 😂 good point
I just love how happy, bright and positive you are, even when you are talking about things you hate. You rock girl!
Agree!!!!
i think you guys could do a rebuild! all of us would understand if you guys take some time off - this is your life and seeing you guys being comfortable living in the van would make us happy too ❣
I tried van life for a while...
And then I realized there's a reason humans invented houses
i think houses are good for some, and maybe evens many, but there’s people who want to explore the world, and a house would be hard to have being gone so often.
THE THING IS WHEN YOU GET OLDER I THINK YOU NEED TO STAY PUT
Well... houses came way before vans. Lol. I get what you’re trying to say though it’s just the way this comment is written is that van life sucking created the need for houses
@@jacquelyns5613 oh yeah I see what you mean, I didn't mean it that way lol. Van life is cool, it was fun for a while, it just wasn't for me in the end. I need more space to put my stuff, I need to not have to worry about where I'm going to park my house for the night, and I need a toilet that is permanently affixed to plumbing that is connected to the public sewer.
I'd rather live in a house then a van any day, but I want to live in a van because it is more convenient for travel
You guys are a couple so genuine and honest that I do have the feeling of knowing you both. It feels like Dana and Lou are two friends I never met and yet I miss them. Thanks for giving me the opporunity to catch a glimpse of a life I never had or will, but as I feel for you guys, I miss it.
Totally agree w u. I love that she truly loves her Van just wants to up grade a few things. I love love love that they REALLY live in Odie and her information is honest and not just cop cat all the other Van life you tubers
Dana we all make mistakes -
even when decorating an
apartment. But changes can
be made. Love Ody. All the best

yes .. really warm-hearted ..:))
Am i the only one that was interested in van life before jenelle eliana blew up?
k s e n i a Nope
No. The answer to "Am I the only one..." is always no. Also, who the fk is jenelle eliana?
Never heard of her.
who the hell is jenelle eliana?
I have never een heard of her.
What's stopping you from putting an external water plug near the back door, and putting a rod/curtain between the doors? You could put magnets in/on the curtain to attach it to the door, and the rod would have latch-hooks on the end and the door would have little loops. This will keep the doors from closing or opening from the wind and dropping the curtain. You could also just string a curtain across between the doors and use some sort of door stop to keep the doors locked open.
What's stopping you from putting a vent on the angled part of the roof of your van? Maybe it's the camera angle but it doesn't look like there's a lot up there.
What's stopping you from installing a wifi extender antenna?
What's stopping you from folding up your bed against the wall and putting a couch in there?
What's stopping you from putting a small 12v PC fan that vents your composting toilet to the outside?
The great thing about van builds and DIY builds, is you can always modify them.
Everything you mentioned you hate, looks like a weekend job to fix. Just find someone with a bunch of tools, and and offer them $50 to let you borrow them, right there in their driveway for a few hours.
They make a pop up shower stall, it's like a dressing room sized tent. You can use that to shower naked. 😁
Mercedes has a shower that tucks into over head storage when not in use. Was sheer genius.
Definitely couldn't have a toilet like that for me. My kids say I would need a nuclear powered fan to get rid of the stench. I don't know what they're talking about. Roses is all i can smell 😃
I got my Ody stickers today 😊👍

when are you renovating the van?
They sold it 😢

We loved this video guys! So so enjoyable to watch - genuine and honest as always. We’ve got a double bed than folds up into a couch+seat and I can tell you than sometimes it is the last thing we want to do up but we have to, otherwise we have very limited room to move around. What we love the most about Ody is the stand up desk and are sooooo envious of your energy setup. We only have room for a small battery which often trips when we do a big day of UA-cam editing! As a result we’ve had to go into coffee shops and pubs to plug in. But like you with Ody, we love Jitters for all her quirks and slowly but surely we’re working on those home improvements. Xx
Dont know why...when I look at you... you remind me of Miley Cyrus
Very nice video!! Are you planning to change some things in the future? It sounds like a few things would be easy fixes?
New Sub, we are converting our van to a campervan so out here
in UA-cam land learning planning etc Thank You for sharing! - Stacey
& Bill :) :)
Use kitty litter. I use it when I go on the road with my husband in his 18 wheeler. I use a black bag kitty litter and carpet fresh and you can't smell it.
You shit in kitty litter?
Foxxxy probablyin a toilet or bucket of some sort
Really UA-cam 0 views and 228 thumbs up
I'm looking forward to whe you decide to redo the van, most of the van lifers I watch redo ot about 2 years into their adventures.
who else thinks this is the best channel?!
ps i make vlogs!!
Two young vibrant people need more space like an RV. Or a tiny home. Van life is better for one person. Pic a man taking a dump in a small space like that and the smell is hitting the kitchen.
With the van being so old, how have the mechanics been such as the motor, transmission, etc.?
Always wondered:
Why can’t you cut a hole on the van floor (with lid of course);
...drive away from the road (to a field);
...dig a small hole on the ground (from inside van);
...poop; (and sanitize)
...lid the hole;
.. drive away!
If you went to the National forest or public B Lnd Mngmnt desert it would be legal, though most roads are gravel and therefore difficult to dig. Further away from road it is easier to find digging sites but you likely couldn't drive over the terrain. Fields in general are private property other than some grasslands in the Midwest and Eastern Rockies. Easier to just park and walk to site for digging 6 in hole far from water.
I was so looking forward to see your video! I think you can still fix the WiFi situation... the toilet is possible to fix too. The bed... that’s another story.
It's pleasant to hear American accents that are listenable to.
The composting toilet can benefit from an extractor fan. Consider a computer cooling fan. Cheap, low power on a timer should do the job.
I have things I would change about my bus. So I log those items in the "I'll get to it eventually" brain list. I can't say I hate anything about my bus cause I WILL get that stuff eventually. That's the great thing about a small space. If you want to change something, it's not a huge multi thousand dollar project with permits and county approval. My old county required a permit to install a damn ceiling fan. Now? I just do it. No more baby sitters. I recommend the Winegard wifi booster. Easy install and works out of the box
I lost track of everything when I saw the German Shepherd. Looks just like mine! Gorgeous!
Thank you for your info... I hope you get to change and upgrade... ❤️
Don’t be hard so hard on yourselves. I think it’s a normal flow to see updates that you can’t forecast at the start. Good luck on your continued journey.
Keep in mind you need more than just an extractor fan. You also need somewhere else for the air to enter/exit the vehicle! And you'll want both open at night when you want privacy. So one maxxair fan + a normal vent is a great way to go. A hole in the floor is another option and would allow cool air to be brought in from under the van, with a roof vent sucking.
Thank you for sharing your "real-life" experiences living "off the grid", and the unforeseen challenges you did not know beforehand. Likewise, I am so grateful for how you share some of the practical solutions vital to make life on the road (motorhome living) more bearable, less cumbersome, and less frustrating in easy to understand demonstrations. Once more, thank you!
videos like this remind me how much i love my house ...but kudos to you if this life style suits you
Me too!
You guys are incredible. I watched your entire build, vid after vid. You inspired me to begin my journey. And videos like this, only help me further. I planned vanlife after my relationship broke down but I was still sharing the hone with my ex. Then one day she demanded I leave so I bought a van and basically moved straight on in. Its a work in progress. While I had this vid playing, I was wiping down the condensation 😂 my roof vent goes in tomorrow and the diesel heater is on its way.
My point is, as im living the vanlife, im creating the van around me and this video helps big time with toilet choices and wifi antennas and bed/settee arrangements. So thank you both, you incredible pair. Stay blessed.
I would love to watch you two make those renovations.
You look so happy. And the joy in your voice is amazing. We are going to be full time camper life people here soon. Can’t wait to get started.
Just realized y’all resemble Em and Richard from Blue Lagoon.
You can still install all the shower stuff. What is holding you back?
I think she was saying(or implying) that if they drill the necessary holes to set it up, it could mess with the insulation
Just do the shower attaching a cloth on the two back doors. Love your videos:)))
oh yes, thats an awsome idea. i would do this too. Simple but effective.
Shower curtain material , a couple of hula hoops & maybe some RAM mount type fittings & you'd have a private outside shower.
Not my idea, I've seen it here on the interwebs somewhere ....
Sadly they don't need this anymore...
@@PermireFabrica I Know:(((((. But I'm so excited about what's coming!!!!
Appreciate the feedback! I'm leaning towards benches or a Murphy bed, and this confirms it. Thanks, and well done, Cool van.
What a nice way to start Tuesday! 🥰
Saw a setup that was a screened floor vent under the van. In conjunction with a ceiling fan blowing out it sucks in cooler shaded air from under the van blows hot air out.
Damn I was suprised by her voice , she looked like would have a teenagers voice !! But it's actually this cool and Big voice
Found your views very informative and has made me rethink my ideas ,so thank you for that ...
Why not just get a data plan with unlimited data
In my experience, "unlimited" data plans just means you're getting a certain GB of fast data. After that's used you'll still have internet, but they're excruciatingly slow. Maybe it depends on your carrier, but I wouldn't bet on unlimited plans, especially if my entire job depends on it.
@@aishahshamsul8642 you're data is deprioritized but still fast after a limit. Its you're hotspot that gets throttled hard after a limit.
Love you two!! That shower curtain is definitely genius...you can always rebuild some parts right? I’ve seen other van conversions get little updates over time!
My poo stink! So i think i would die staying at the same room as my toilet.
I love how honest these videos are! P.S. Just got my Ody stickers today!! I love them!!
Appreciate the honesty. I'm just casually entertaining the thought of van life. If I would just make the money to buy the van and all the stuff in it, I would definitely give it a whirl.
Just park it and fix it! 👍🏽
very useful thanks!
This is good advice.
The thing I hate most about my camper is my wife complaining about my camper. Really she is free to get her own. (And she doesn't complain about it. She is smarter than that.)
I think its really interesting that you expressed a dislike for the permanent bed! I've found most complain about the opposite. Personally, for the build I'm working on I've been planning to build a permanent bed, but only if I can ALSO fit s couch/workspace in addition. Thanks for your thoughts!
I never knew Miley Cyrus sister lived in a van
Well you beautiful people, I noticed 4 of these 5 things when you did the build. What I saw then and what you have said here, it's quite obvious you did not do enough research before starting.
I know if you did a 2nd build you would get it spot on. You learnt the hard way, but you survived.
I love you real life comments, including the toilet (I ended up buying one too) I own a teardrop that I built from plans (3 different sets combined) THE BED; I use a five foot trailer so we could have a queen size real mattress. I broke my back in the Vietnam War and I need a soft mattress. I put a drop down 16 inch floor opening. I had the mattress custom made by the Sydney Mattress company. It's in two pieces, with the front half hinged in the middle so it will fold. You lift the front end up 24" on to the front wall (I have added Velcro strips for support) and the hinged second half moves forward towards the front to sit on. Your feet are down in the storage hole. We have a large Computer screen we plug into our lap top inside to watch movies or the internet. The mattress cost $1,800.00 custom made with three inch memory on the top of the factory mattress base which is enclosed.
Your zebra necklace is so cute. My daughter loves zebras 😊
install a power to the roof bed and then build the solfa that way you will have both.
Thank you! I was debating fix bed or table/bed. You made a great point. But if you did that, wouldn't you lose the 'garage' space?
Good point that you could have benches and still leave a bed set up when you want to. I have a fixed bed too and never thought of it that way. But you'd probably lose some storage space. Your van is lovely!
Everything you mentioned is fixable, and you know how to do it! (Conversions are never finished.) Thanks for all the experience you bring to your videos. They are very valuable to us novices.
You live a bomb life, simplicity and travel! No mortgage, but I can understand your burdens! Happy camping you two!
Off topic but you have a great smile, and come across so sweet and genuine. Even talking about things you hate, your energy feels so positive.
I love watching yall. So creative and its refreshing to see yall livin off love
WHAT ? WAKE UP👀👁 😠😷😭😥🤔 WHAT?
I just finished the audiobook today! Loved it so much! Can’t wait to participate in all the challenges!
shower would not take much to modify on the back as you said, save up for a compost toilet, and as for the bed, we have a sofa type bet and its great for space when put away but never comfy when sleeping. Sleep and bedroom life is very important, Be careful giving up a bed space for day comfort.
You’re telling me that these two are German?!
who said that?
I don't think they are
No views but 137 likes what???
About WIFI, there are many videos teaching how to make a antenna that amplify the capacity of your router. Just search for "wifi antenna booster" and make one for yourself!
We have a pop up tent that was like $20 that are perfect for outdoor showering. You wouldn’t even have to move your shower bag from where you put it. Just pop up the tent, step in and you’re good to go. They’re surprisingly compact since it’s just for one person to stand or sit in as they’re also used to out toilets in for portable outhouses.
A friend of mine installed a PVC pipe on the side of the van (it can be the full size of the van) and it can be the diameter you want. Then you fill this pipe with water and put a tap or a quick fitting for a shower.
Take a look at this curtain:
ua-cam.com/video/4UJ6mnlqSTQ/v-deo.html
Its either LOVE or HATE! What about dislike or annoyance or "that's nice"?
we had the same van.... we did a quick cheap build after a set bed "mistake"... we built a sofa with a drop down bed onto it... worked great.... kitched was made from a 60s side board we got for £15 just cut a hole for the sink and did tiling just like yours ;) it was called ME-OLD-BAMBOO VAN
5 things LOCALS HATE about newschool vanlifers 1- Shitting on the ground. 2- Making new campsites on unspoiled desert. 3- Driving 20 mph under the speed limit. 4- Driving 20 over the speed limit. 5- Worrying about their van's layout more than the place they're actually visiting, and so much, they make yet another "5 things I hate about my van" video for the internet.
We built our own composting (bucket) toilet with the very same urine diverter. First of I installed a type of P-trap for the urine hose. Because if you just have it going down the hose into a container the old urine smell starts creeping up. And that's nasty. The P-trap prohibits that smell getting through (same as you would have under a sink). Second...I installed a small computer fan (2.8 Watts only) to suck out any smell continuously...result: Nothing smells whatsoever, before...during..or after using it. Which I cannot say about a normal flush-toilet.
On the composting toilet 🚽, doesn’t Sawdust and Coconut Coir 🥥 and “Poo Powder” brand eliminate the smell? It’s supposed to go on top of human waste both urine and defecate. Also, both could have two separate composting bags. An Air Vent is also needed. And finally, a lysol sprayer
U cn jst add an exaust fan/pipe in ur toilet...probably??

"Duff your turd" - it works. BTW - people in full houses constantly renovate because they don't like house features. It seems normal not to like what exists.
Looks like the problems are fixable, fairly easily actually , with time, and a little budget over time.
1- add shower curtain hardware on outside of van so privacy and proper position of water bag is achieved for comfort
2- place a new fan on side of van instead of roof. You have space. You don't need to use it all the time.
3- buy or make a composting toilet.
4- buy an WiFi extender
5- rebuild you bed into a pull out.
_------------- motivation ?
What I found striking is that all these items were important on their wish list from the very beginning, yet it seems they compromised on them or give up on trying to get the addressed.. a little mental break and then back to work, one item at a time and in no time they could severely lighten the stress level these pbs cause.
Thank you!! You guys have really inspired me to do my own van build. This video helps a lot with little decisions I had.
I love how she just never stops smiling as if it's engraved into her face :D
Just change it. I realise most people don't like re-doing their work. It doesn't bother me at all. I reckon, just live in your van for awhile and design your perfect van interior. Then find a place to stay and gut the van entirely. Build the new interior in the van out of cardboard boxes and duct tape. Tweak the design until it is absolutely perfect. Then build it again out of wood to the new design. That's what I'm doing with our 4WD bus. It works a treat.
thanks for sharing your errors so the rest of us whom would like to switch to van life would benefit from,. Keep up the good work and enjoy life!
the biggest tip i pass on, and something you rarely see in builds, AND something EASY to add.....a floor vent!....the coolest air is always underneath, plus it gives any kind of roof vent a true full-range inlet...i just use a cheap vent cover with some added screen over the bottom, and just cover it wth a rug in winter....ive also made some good shower rigs in the space outside either side or rear doors....easy to do in a way that doesnt splash inside more than a few drops and the opening provides 10x utility, more room, easier curtain rig, etc...
It feels like you guys think your first build was your one and only chance to make the perfect van. What do you plan to do if something breaks? Just dump it and start over?
Iterating is life.
Just fix the things you hate already.
Having a matress in one single piece is VERY nice though... ugh the backpains...
You should do a one hour video on the insulation jute? Exactly how is it made? Where did you buy it? Why is it not a common word, like 'drywall'? Best Wishes to All for 2020
Never been this early in my life!! Woopwooop
I don't know...but when I lived in a car,, camper or van, or lived out in a tent (all of those at one time or another) I never thought of my car or tent as a place that needs to replace a house, (kitchen, sleep area, electrical set up, insulation etc etc etc). it was a place to sleep, and get to the places I want, but my house was the outside world...and spent most of my time where ever I wanted, but didn't have all this "installations". Air circulation problems? open windows, not enough air? sit outside. Outdoor shower? I used the river or ocean (when I made it to the coast) if it was cold, I heated up water and dumped over my head. Why all this unneeded crap? It seems this new concept of "Van Life" is trying to install all the crap you had in a house...and for me it was the opposite. The van was just a vehicle to get where I needed and sleep in, maybe have a place to use the toilet, but tried to NOT sleep or spend time int he van as much as possible....that's what the outdoors are for.
You need to have a venting fan running 24hrs/7 days a week for a sepration or fancy composting toilet. Do you have a fan and a vent system installed? A whole in the wall with a computer fan on the inside and a vent cover over the hole on the outside to stop rain coming in - would do it. $20 - $30?
I've used a shower tent in the past. I got rid of it because I didn't go on anything more than weekend camping trips.
This is the one I had: www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Easy-Up-Deluxe-Shower-Shelter/1968929.uts?productVariantId=4076535
I think Walmart has one for $50 or something
Totally disagree on the bed! Fixed bed forever!
You can buy a booster that can be put in a waterproof case and uses car battery to get better signal...installing it in a pelican case allows you to take it on hikes and plug into a battery pack if you need it. we use one In the bush and air card. We bought gutter screens and used them on our windows in our back seats. Also you can use furnace pipe insulation for your front windows. Works really well. Better than the stuff marked for RVs....it’s just a milli thicker. Sturdier when hot and really keeps it cooler longer.
Brilliant video, gives anybody food for thought about what their priorities should be when converting a van.
I came expecting a "watch out and avoid these things" but I watched a "our research was poor as fuck before jumping in and this is the result"
Can't you still fix these problems.
For your shower issue have you considered installing 2 vertical post holes on the rear of the van doors. Have a curtain pole you can insert and viola. For air circulation I roof mounted 2 air boxes (air intakes for engines) with a slide panel for the rain. It’s no substitute for air conditioning but it absolutely gets rid of a lot of excess heat and especially stops that stuffy used air saturation feeling at night when sleeping. Oh and for your toilet bag put kitty litter and a mothball in the bag it will definitely help with the smell.
I love these videos!! I think I’d like a van for a cross country road trip! But not...forever lmao
Not very many people living in a van has enough money to make a van like this. Some people just live on a cot in the back of a 2003 Tacoma.
I've been looking out for vans with bed layout instead of benches but after your video I'm rethinking it. Truth be told, I will still probably keep the bed on most of the time but the ideia of the table and benches also feels insteresting
