By the lyrics it seems like the brother is more of the protector and someone else in the family is abusing her. Could be the father or maybe an uncle. I wouldn’t think a neighbor because then it wouldn’t be incest. She does say though that “if he wakes up he’ll show you what I’m talking about”. Sounds like talking about if her brother woke up. That’s just what I’ve taken from it though. I noticed that Florence Welch became really protective and close to her during Florences last tour as well.
I think when she says "mamas comatose she cant leave the bed something smells rotten and its starting to spread" is both literal and metaphorical. Like maybe her mother is just severely depressed or maybe she is literally rotting. But theres also the incestuous abuse happening throughout the family. The "rot" is spreading.
This comment was made a long time ago, but if the mom is "comatose" in the sense that she's depressed/unresponsive to the rest of the world, the "rot" spreading could very well be that the dad got angry about the lack of sexual activity between them and moved onto his daughter. This would also make sense in the way that the brother could potentially wake up and catch him, considering they'd be under the same roof.
this songs always confused me because at first i thought her brother was the one SA’ing her and manipulating her because it would make sense if she was looking through holes in his door and maybe her being so defensive over him is because he’s the only love she’s ever known, maybe her and her brother are products of incest and the line about something smells rotten and it’s starting to spread is talking about the incest continuing, but then in the second half it sounds like another older man is abusing her and if her brother found out about it he’d kill him, there’s so many ways to interpret it
Can u react to long wide nowhere by Ethel cain it's another unreleased, there's no lyric video but in the audio the lyrics are in the description. The songs so beautiful Ethel actually cries towards the end of the song.
Hello, this is the second videos of yours i see. I am a fan of ethel and just to put you in context Ethel Cain is a project. The whole album tells the story of Ethel. It is supposed to be fictional but yes you never know where the inspiration comes from lol
I’ve always interpreted it like this so she says “does your baby (herself) know her daddy’s (her dad) a rapist? He (her brother) hates the way you (the father) look at me you’re already dead If he (her brother) wakes up he’ll show you what I’m talking about
“I’m not scared of God, I’m scared he was gone all along” Is insane to me it means like I’m not scared to die or If I do I’m not scared of going to hell because I’ve already been through hell (I’m scared he was gone all along) so she’s more scared of experiencing the abuse she faced before again that to face god. Her rapist has more power over her than god himself…
I interpret the "You were wrong" as people not believing her when she cried for help or saying she's lying about all the SA.
Oh ok that makes sense!

Oh interesting!

Yes I completely agree!!
I think it’s both. She thinks if her brother finds out this other older man is SA her too he’d kill him cause he’s so “protective” of her
U really should react Arsonist by Cozy St Jean. Its so emotional and Ethel vibe
I’ll look into it thank you!

The narrative of the song describes a toxic and sometimes violent relationship between two siblings.

This song makes me sick to my stomach in the best way possible. Ethereal really knows how to make us feel the comfort of being uncomfortable.
she is indeed ethereal
