Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks, and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. Next month I am working with some artists in a local art club who mostly like realistic art and don't like or understand non-objective art. I am going to email them a hand-out on various art movements that deal with the abstract so they can understand that this is definitely NOT "art that is about nothing," as I overheard one of them say! I want them to get an understanding that creating abstract and non -objective art is way over 100 years old or older and that it is a valid and exciting way to create art. I have been looking for a way to have them "play" and be free with an activity that does not take up too much time. Doing an exercise like this will open their sense of play and make them trust their intuition. Thank you so much. I will direct them to view this video at home before our meeting so they will have an idea of how to proceed. You are delightful and your work is too! Keep up the great work, Betty Franks!

Well, it's a great start! I ended up doing a little more to it after the timer went off. I don't expect to create a piece in only 10 minutes, but it certainly helps me warm-up and stay loose. Thanks for watching!

Love these exercises! I’ve opened my journal, and am going to experiment using your exercise as inspiration. I’ll work quickly, but maybe for 20 minutes so my anxiety doesn’t kick in! 😅

Yes please!!! BUT could you make these changes to the 10 minute videos, because we want to display or gift these after we finish them. Prime the surface and let dry before starting. Use Opaque paints only. It’s frustrating to watch the transparent colors perform poorly for this application.

That what happened to me I feel in love of a flower that appeared and it gave me hell of a problem at the end I just had to eliminate it
Right?! That will happen. It's hard to fall in love with a specific area and then try to finish the painting. It's almost impossible!
This was so fun to watch and had inspired me to do this in my studio to get loosened up 22:08

Honestly, it takes practice! I can be a perfectionist, too! This exercise helps me stay loose.
Please do more of these! They are wonderful. Haven't done one yet, but will do one today. I didn't catch the first one you did, but will also watch that one today before painting one myself. Really love your work and also wanted you to know that your method of teaching is superb. I have watched many many online art teachers and you are one of the very best. You are organized and detailed in your descriptions, which is so helpful. You also have a soothing manner of speaking which is wonderful. As far as what you painted today, I loved it. The only thing I wanted you to change was, on the orange marks that you wanted to change because they were too close to the orange marks on the left, I would have loved to see what the yellow would have looked like on those marks. Yellow with no other color mixed with it. It is such a beautiful yellow. Anyway, keep doing these, please!

This was the first 10 minutes exercise I watched and I immediatly tried it myself. I allowed myself a little more time after the alarm went off, because I started totally unprepared - I didn't even have some paint ready, had to choose some tubes while I went. But I can say I loved it. I was very stressed when I started because of a message I had received shortly before and this exercise was a lot better than telling myself to breathe in and breathe out. Doing the exercise myself taught me a lot about the things you are saying about balance of colors, shapes, light and dark. You can hear it and watch someone do it, but seeing where your own piece of work needs balance it makes a lot more sense. I am going to do this more often, maybe even for a couple of days in the #100dayproject I am doing on Instagram.

Betty, If you were painting on say, a 24 x 24" canvas and using larger brushes and you wanted to limit your time what amount of time would you limit yourself to? .......Just curious. I love working small but I want to work larger, too. I do not want to loose this energy and freshness you seem to get every time you do these 10-minute pieces. What do you advise time wise?
Hi Laura! If I was working on a 24x24, I would set the timer for 30 minutes. You'll get a lot done!
I got a bit carried away with a piece yesterday and hugely overworked it so now it’s a hot mess. I’m definitely trying this exercise today with a limited palette to hopefully ground myself and get back to my bigger piece. Thanks for sharing this, definitely helpful and appreciated ❤
