Zuko not killing Ozai here is pretty on point with what Iroh later says when they ask if he could defeat the Firelord. For the rest of the world, it would look like a son killing his father to take the throne for himself
One complaint I have of Iroh saying that is he wanted zuko to face his sister for the throne. I know it needed to be done, but It was kinda hypocritical for Iroh to say that.
@@jackanderson368 But Zuko is the rightful heir in that case, it's VERY easy to spin that as, "my power hungry and evil sister tried to take my rightful throne from me so I defended myself" rather than, "so I got into a shitfight with my sister over power"
@@jackanderson368 not only that, but he didn't killed Azula and didn't intended to do so. Putting his younger sister in prison is different than killing his father.
@@fandemusique4693 Honestly there whole family got issues lol. I even feel bad for Ozai. I feel like no one ever talks about how Azulón ordered ozai to kill his first son just so he doesn’t get banished. You can tell what kind of father Azulón was to ozai.
I always thought a great examplke of ozai's power was the fact that azula, who is such a firebending prodigy, had to hear that firebending was back from ozai using lightning, but ozai *felt* the tiniest sliver of the sun and whipped out a full power lightning bolt immediately
not to menton that with the sun still 99% blocked, firebending was likely still weak and just barely 'back on'. The fact that ozai can still fire a lightning bolt in a fraction of the time it takes anyone else to do so is testament to his skill as a bender.
@@thegamesforreal1673 exactly, it still catches me off guard because he just whips that shit up in a second, every other instance of lightning generation we see needs a moment of charge up.
@@lazyliongames6660 lightning bending is a variation on Fire bending. Same like how Metal bending is a variation on earth bending, blood bending on water bending, etc etc
That moment at the end with Zuko following them in the balloon, also plays a variation on the fire nation theme, where it's in a major key instead of a minor one, showing Zuko's turn to good.
I truly can't wait for the "I haven't killed anyone" montage when he talks to Yangchen. Just 2 straight minutes of all the people he definitely killed throughout the series
Well, the UA-camr E;R already kinda did that in one his Legend of K̶o̶r̶r̶a̶ Whorra vids, but it's probably still gonna be funny the second time around.:)
I've always liked how clearly different the animators draw Ozai's lighting generation compared to Azula and Iroh. WIth Azula and Iroh they both have to do that long, circular motion with either arm and then point and strike, whereas Ozai pretty much hip-fires that shit with both hands at once. Really goes a long way in helping us see just how dangerous Ozai is.
Yeah a lot of Ozai's power is just implied, though strongly implied. it's unthinkable he wouldn't be stronger than azula, and we know they can't quite beat her, so
wish we saw more of a non comet ozai but i have doubt he could do a few things: He could probably fly without the comet (hell azula could) and his fire would probably be overwhelming. Dude is lethal
@@wafflingmean4477 If this wasn't a kids show, the gaang would have actually decapitated her when they had her restrained. Of course, Azula would have the foreknowledge that this isn't a kid's show and wouldn't have put herself in that position.
*Zuko redirecting Ozai's lightning back at him is one of the greatest moments of this series. Also notice how he strikes the ground as to not kill Ozai. Zuko knew that killing/beating the firelord was the avatar's destiny.*
Not his destiny, but he could have hurt him at least. The man was wearing metal armor and is totally defenseless. Just shoot him and make Aang’s job easier!
@@leffeup8117 Zuko can't kill Ozai for the same reason Iroh said he can't: For the world, it would be just a family fighting for the throne. For peace to be achieved, the avatar should kill the fire lord
My favorite part of the Zuko/Ozai confrontation is Zuko bringing up how the rest of the world doesn't see the Fire Nation as a beacon of greatness, specifically stating that "They hate us, and we deserve it." I like to think it's Zuko and the writers calling back to Zuko Alone when Lee shouted "I hate you!" at Zuko after he used his firebending in front of him. I think it really shows how Zuko never forgot about Lee and demonstrates what he learned in that episode.
It's pretty interesting to mention that the writers of the show have said before that the Fire Nation is an allegory to the United States (in spite of all the Japanese influences). Whether or not you agree with their take on it, it's really interesting the kind of depth that this show has even beyond the surface level happenings of the show. There's so much that can be learned about nationalism, about toxic family members, about finding your own path. That's why this show is great in my opinion, it has so much to say and isn't afraid to say it.
@@Rosa-kd2cl Dimartino quoted an article from somewhere on his facebook about how there are a lot of similarities between the Fire Nation and the US. Can't seem to find it now though, but I don't have a facebook so /shrug
Azula vs Aang, Sokk and Toph is a *super* underrated fight. This is the first time the GAang have any had any real interaction with Azula other than fighting. Hell they talk to her more than they even talked to Zuko at that point. Azula's interactions have also been limited to her own group, but to see her taunt, mock and play her mind games with the heroes directly for once is such a delight.
You know what? That's absolutely right! The most we've heard Zuko say to the Gaang is his conversation with Katara, but beyond that...he really hasn't spoken to them much beyond "Where's the Avatar?" and "How stupid do you think I am?"
On fighting Ozai not being a good idea: remember that Ozai still has his guards just in the other room. It wouldn't be a one-on-one duel, Aang would be fighting Ozai _and_ his guards, _and_ probably Azula and the Dai Li, all while deep behind enemy lines and cut off from support. It's not the worst strategic decision to fall back and regroup.
It’s a good point. Facing the Fire Lord here would have meant Aang vs more then just Ozai. There is certainly an alternate show where they do face him Zuko and Azula meet there, but it also has something to do with the people they left behind who they wanted to help escape safely.
And considering how Ozai was able to pull off a f**king lightning bolt with little sun in a fraction of a second, while Aang was still cut off from the Avatar State, it’s safe to say that Ozai would have someone mop the floor of the palace with the blood of Team Avatar.
Like you mentioned, at the end of this episode they lost their biggest advantage in the eclipse, allies are captured, and Sozin’s comet approaches. The only real hope for the Gaang and the whole world really was? Any guesses? Yes! Zuko of course. Dude literally was the last hope for everybody. Now consider what Iroh said in The Storm. “The Avatar gives Zuko hope”. Well now look at that switch up. The last hope for everything is now Zuko doing his thing
maybe, Azula doesn't trust Mai and Tylee when she doesn't have her fire bending. Would you have the two people you know that can defeat you, around you when you are at your weakest?
I mean, it's not the like the Dai Lee couldn't betray her here, either... If anything, I'd rather have my lifelong childhood friends by my side than some random secret agents from an enemy kingdom who have demonstrated a willingness to betray existing power structures when it suits them lol.
@@thegamesforreal1673 the difference is the Dai Lee were fully devoted. They took down the walls that kept the last earth kingdom stronghold safe. And even when she banished them they didn't attack her. May and Ti Lee were scared into helping azula and it wasn't long after this episode where they betray her. So I could see them taking advantage of the eclipse
I don't agree, the Dai Lee may have seemed devoted (and in the end it's clear that they were), but Azula doesn't know that for 100% sure. From her perspective, they may or may not attempt to do what they helped her do again: Commit a coup. They've shown willingness and ability to do so in the past, so they may do it again. Azula, calculating as she is, for sure has contingency plans for when that happens, and allowing them to be her sole bodyguards during her weakest moment is a massive oversight on her part. On Mai and Ty-Lee, sure, fear kept them on Azula's side, but they were also her childhood friends. Mai wasn't really manipulated into helping Azula's mission, she came of her own volition. Ty-Lee was scared into it, but it seemed she didn't realize it was Azula but rather some cosmic karmic force that "gave her those signs". Ty-Lee also doesn't seem to be the kind of person to betray people. The only reason she does betray one of her two best friends, Azula, is to save her other best friend from her...
@@thegamesforreal1673 mai was still frightened of azula evident in the line "I love zuko more than I fear you" Her love for zuko is what made her turn against her, she would've read zukos letter by this point. Knowing he's an enemy of the firenation and his biggest threat was vulnerable I think she would taken the opportunity. Ti lee I could see being confused at Mai's action at first but quickly understanding that if azula gets her bending back, mai dies, thus helping mai And attempting an escape throughout the chaos of the invasion. The dai lee azula trusted considering they aided in the fall of the earth kingdom practically winning the war for the fire nation. That and the dia lee were smart, what would they gain or do after taking out azula? They had no motive to kill her, nor could they escape if they did being in the heart of the fire nation capital
The composition of the Zuko and Ozai scene is also incredible. When Zuko talks, Ozai is sitting, framed lower and showing that Zuko is in control. But when Ozai mentions Ursa and Zuko stops to listen, the whole scene flips, with this amazing shot: 7:45 showing how little Zuko actually is compared to his father.
One thing I saw pointed out to me that made a lot of sense, is that to use lightning bending you have to have total peace within yourself. So, for Ozai to so quickly summon the lightning to shoot at Zuko, it means that it still meant nothing to him.
I always forget how quick the rest of the series goes after this episode. You have Zuko's arrival, his field trip with Aang, Sokka, then Katara, then ember island players, and then the finale episodes. It really goes quick
it feels like a lot, but yeah when you're watching, it's over in a trice. and the pacing is so strange, that sort of 'post final battle because this isn't the real final battle' thing is almost never done. it feels so weird.
It always makes me sad because I love his dynamic with the GAang and wish we had more of it. We could have done without shit like the Painted Lady in exchange for at least one more episode of just GAang shenanigans.
But each of the following episodes are amazing and only make me wish Zuko was part of their group for longer, and even then he feels like he was part of the group for longer than he actually was
I actually think Aang not being quite as fast indoors makes a lot of sense. It seems like moving like that creates a lot of air currents that would be pretty dangerous for his friends in an enclosed space.
This is pretty true. But also people need to remeber that maximum running speed in a straight line is not comparable to agility and nonlinear mobility.
@@NoESanity I'd agree with this, but it's also worth noting that Aang has been shown to easily out-maneuver both Azula and Zuko in combat at the same time before now (while sleep deprived, I might add), but that was outdoors with no allies present.
One thing to show how fucking powerful Ozai is, that I liked, is that he feels the the tiniest sliver of sunlight coming back *while being underground.* Firebenders draw their powers from the sun, and he doesn't even have direct sunlight. Both other times we've seen lightningbending it was in direct sunlight, and this is the quickest we've ever seen it done. Also, Azula hears that the firebending is back on from Ozai's lightning shooting, showing she didn't feel it.
I never got the impression that fire benders were like plants and needed direct sunlight, I figured the eclipse was more spiritual than physical - like how a full moon for water benders is almost just symbolic, it's not about the amount of moonlight just some specific unscientific event
Azula running away actually makes total sense when you think about the fact that she is going to the airships to kill the gangs family. Like she knows team avatar are beaten, and either way she wants to crush the rest of the invasion. Thinking about how fast the airships take off I’d say she went directly there after leaving the fight
That's kind of what I think too. Also I think Azula considered that she couldn't keep up her duck and run tactics forever. Both her Dai Li supports were out of commission at that point and it's only a short matter of time before the underground battlefield became untenable facing two earthbenders alone. There was also the chance of them actually trying to take down Ozai still and her splitting off held the chance one of them would give chase to end the Royal Line making Ozai's fight easier or if they leav her in the (unlikely) event they beat Ozai she is still able to take the throne and run the nation.
@@littymarquis764 Or maybe just the show sometimes doesn't make sense and that's okay. You can admit that a great show still did something that doesn't make sense
I like to imagine that Iroh broke out of prison by waiting until the eclipse was about to start, then firebending the bars to melt slightly before breaking them, then using some of the pieces to fight his way out against the depowered guards.
Yeah, the whole "Fire Nation" already knew has bugged me even as a kid. And really, it's not all on the Earth King. Wasn't Katara holding the secret plans about the Invasion when she was captured? And even then--the generals were captured. There was no reason whatsoever for the Gaang not to think that the Invasion was compromised--but they could also have said that the Eclipse was still too good an opportunity to pass up.
Earth King straight up told the disguised Azula that they were planning invasion and when it was gonna happen way before Katara ran into them. Wouldn't have mattered if Katara had the plans on her. They already knew by the time Azula and her crew encountered Katara.
Nobody can reasonably blame the Earth King; three honourable allies, confirmed to be trusted by the Avatar himself, walks into his door; he then proceeds to explain how they will defeat the nation they are going against. How is that unreasonable of the Earth King? Also, this is likely one of his first political matters to EVER be handled. He had been a puppet to Long Feng, and had been a simple cultural minister before the Crisis in Ba Sing Se.
I always thought the idea was, the Gaang bet on the world believing the Avatar had been killed. without an Avatar and with no Earth Kingdom, there really wouldn't have been any forces to attempt the attack. As far as the firelord was concerned, the only people that escaped the fall of Ba Sing Se were some waterbender girl, a blind earthbender, a former puppet king with a bear (whatever that is. Shouldn't it be a platypus bear or smth?) and a kid with a boomerang. It wouldn't be far-fetched for them to have discounted the whole ploy. That said, the Gaang should have known there is a possibility they were prepared regardless.
In defense of the eclipse glasses, to not look at the sun would mean to look down or keep your back constantly to the sun. Both of these methods will affect your combat ability.
dude, how do you take a walk outside during a sunny day? shuffling backwards, ass facing the sun? compared to that, an eclipse makes the light dimmer, not brighter, so if you don't need special glasses on the street, you won't need eclipse glasses either as long as you don't stare directly into the sun for minutes
I dont know, there was a solar eclipse in 2018 and my state was able to see 90 something percent coverage, and you could see everything fine. The only time you needed the glasses was when you wanted to look directly at the sun to see how much was covered. They definitely wouldn’t need them unless they wanted to stare at the sun
Like OA said, there aren't any clocks in the Avatar universe, and it's likely that nobody knew exactly how long the eclipse would last. Keeping an eye on the sun (literally) was probably necessary to know how long the defending fire benders would be vulnerable. Letting your guard down expecting somebody to be completely defenseless is dangerous if there's a time restriction
I wonder what would have happened if Aang beat Ozai in this episode. Who would take the thrown? At this point, everyone in the royal family would be seen as "bad" by Team Avatar and most of the world.
Considering Zuko hadn't been disgraced again and if Aang confronted Ozai here, he likely would ascend to the throne. He had also already committed to defying Ozai so he would have probably helped the gaang
My guess is they'd to give it to Iroh, who would probably accept out of the necessity to restore the world's balance as opposed to him wanting the position. Under Iroh's rule, Zuko would likely turn truly good since he's now welcomed without having to capture the Avatar, and so he'd be perfectly capable of taking up the throne at that point. Not much would change other than a brief Iroh intermission.
Also, there's kind of a difference between "not being able to pin her down", because she's "too quick", and just being able to run faster than her. Aang's basically saying that because she's too quick and slippery, he can't overpower her, or keep her from moving around. If he can't do that with Azula, there's a pretty good chance that he wouldn't be able to do that to ozai either, especially since he doesn't know how to counteract lightning yet, and he doesn't know how to firebend, which I'm assuming would be a great boon in countering firebending.
Oh god please legitimately do a “aang hasn’t killed anyone” montage PLEASE. I recently rewatched the series in full with my fiancé and pointed out every time Aang did, in fact, take a life and it would be amazing to see them in a montage. On a related note, we also had a running joke of Appa being okay with murder
"Appa being okay with murder" what animal isn't okay with murder? It's not even really murder, because murder is specific to people killing people- animals killing is in their nature, so like... no? This point is moot haha
At 5:00 can we seriously talk about Dante's incredible vocal performance here? You can FEEL the emotion pouring out of Zuko here, and voice cracks are so perfect to not only sell you on the emotion, but also to remind you that Zuko is still just a kid, man. Perfect scene, right here. Everything about it was masterful.
Him perfectly stressing "My FATHER" and "How could you possibly justify a duel with a CHILD?!" is heartbreaking. Bad thing Ozai didn't have any little sign of remorse at that moment - he was still convinced he had done the right thing back then three years ago
@@ashlynwolffwhen Ozai said he was going to kill Zuko, he didn’t smirk or move or laugh or even blink. He was just like “I was going to kill you” with zero emotion. To me that’s worse than sadism.
I would have liked some commentary on Azula's success with taunting Sokka. All his intelligence and even knowing the strategy she was utilizing on the group couldn't combat his emotional response. It's for any viewer who says they'd be too smart to fall for that or that they'd see past the distraction to the true mission - when it's YOUR loved ones or it's just the right phrasing of words, you're as vulnerable as anyone else would be.
theory on aangs runnin ability; he can run as fast as the wind... only when he has said wind to call upon. Inside a cave theres less air available and theres almost no amount of wind movement to the air inside said cave; esp as it seems to be an artificial cave (likely made by the dai li).
that would make sense, but then again he was able to use his glider in the cave to fly over the lava, so he obviously was able to generate some lift with his airbending
Something I just noticed my last watch through this episode. Iroh had no idea that a solar eclipse was coming, it just so happened that he was getting ripped to shreds and then the eclipse happened, giving him an opportunity to bust himself out and escape. This is the same thing Bumi did, practicing neutral jing and waiting for an opening. This is because Iroh and Bumi are both a part of the white lotus and Bumi shared this bit of knowledge with Iroh as he explored the philosophies of the other bending disciplines
i have a feeling Iroh knew about the eclipse though, in fact they used the eclipse day as the timeframe of which him and the rest of the white lotuses masters would meet again. the white lotus has agents hidden across the world and they were likely meeting with Iroh in secret exchanging intel, its the only explanation as to how he got the prince hairpin and how that letter was delivered to Zuko.
Appa's sad roar as they fly off with the music just always gets me. A final cry of defeat... And just like other people said, Aang specifically says Azula is too "quick" not fast. This is showing that Azula is highly agile. Sure Aang can run fast, but they aren't having a full on sprint, they're fighting in a tight enclosed area.
It is absolutely brilliant--the perfect speech at that moment. It has no frills; it wastes no time. Aang just says what he needs to say, raw, sad, grateful, and determined. You just know Aang's words will be echoing in all their minds for all the time they live as prisoners of war.
Usually in shows, when a character ends their journey, the series doesn't know what to do with it and it just stays around. Avatar managed to give Zuko his own journey without it feeling forced
Actually, the heat of the magma (combined with Aang's air bending) would make it so that flying over would be relatively safe. If anything, the thing that Aang would have to focus on is not gaining too much lift while flying. The issue with earth bending a bridge would mainly be them inadvertently disrupting the magma flow and causing unnecessary volcanic activity, along with them having to take things slow to keep the structure around them from collapsing.
basically yeah, if you take into account the pretty universal cartoon rules where the air in a lava tunnel is perfectly breathable and merely uncomfortably hot, instead of being a literal oven.
@@KairuHakubi I could see Aang or a fire bender being able to be at least somewhat comfortable in there, but I don't think Sokka or Toph could last long in there.
@@elizabethgouverneur2972 they weren't really a thing at that point in time. we only saw roku and kyoshi lavabending and those were fully realised avatars
Hours, minutes, and seconds predate clocks by quite a ways. All three have their basis in Latin, although originally they also had variable lengths, as they were defined by the time it takes between sun up and sun down, instead of sun up to sun up. and also Toph's powers probably work both ways, just like how you can focus and see detail in smaller things or hear fainter sound more clearly than you otherwise would, it makes sense that focusing on the vibrations would allow her to see specific things more clearly. It also probably helps to encase part of herself in the earth, as that helps to transfer the vibrations from the earth to her
I always liked how they had set up this arc a season before hand. They had spent the past 20 episodes leading up to what was supposed to be the “final battle” only for them to loose. From an audience perspective it doesn’t hit as hard because we know Azula knows, but this is such a huge punch in the gut for the Gaang.
Oh well, as a 14 year old, watching this as it came out originally and having to wait for seasons to continue and only getting one new episode each week I absolutely forgot about Azula knowing the plan and was totally surprised by the loss of the Gaang
11:52 It's a nice detail that when Zuko was hunting Aang before it was always by sea, low and close to the ground. But now that he's changed and grown as a person he's now following him by air, the same element Aang is native too but also shows how much Zuko has risen as a character. Aang and the crew were always above him before and now he's on equal footing with them.
The way the guard tried to bend fire at 4:40 reminded me of that earth-bending scene from the live action movie where an entire squad of earth-benders moved one tiny pebble..
Sociopaths like Azula are extremely good liars who are never caught and don’t have tells. My mom who grew up with a family like this (and husband), didn’t even blink when Azula rolled off that lie like she did.
true. Saying something preposterous that nobody's going to believe anyway doesn't have that same 'tension' that a 'real' lie has. You're not scared that anyone will sees through it because you don't care if anyone sees through it.
Katara's hair going crazy as she shifts her water shield is such an untalked about animation moment. Love the physicality it lends to bending when a character's hair or clothes commit to the follow through of the action.
Zuko had not yet taught Aang lightening redirection. If he faces Ozai now even with Toph and Sokka’s help lightening would be a game changer. (Assuming Ozai’s lightening would attack faster than toph or aang could defend with an earth shield or something)
He could just dodge lightning, Aang is always good at that. The fact that Ozai would be extremely unlikely to fight alone would be the real issue. There would be the fire ending guards and Dai Li and probably Azula too. And they would have been prepared to fight and get reinforcements. No matter how good you are any real fighting style, the amount of people you have to fight against and cover for attacks will soon result in your defeat.
Another point about Zuko vs Ozai, Ozai is able to generate lightning with both hands at an incredible speed. Iroh and Azula are only able to generate lightning by going through specific stances and can only fire it with one hand. It’s another way of showing just how powerful Ozai is before the comet.
Okay this gets into headcanon and theorizing but here's my thing about Zuko not killing Ozai with his broadswords. Ozai is obviously taunting the hell out of Zuko here. He knows it's the eclipse, he knows that Zuko wants to hurt him. But do you really think Ozai would command his guards to just leave if he thought that Zuko would kill him without Ozai getting anything? Let's not forget that Ozai plans for EVERYTHING. Sure, he's caught off guard at many points and he's overconfident on a social/hierarchal level but the guy knows his strength and weaknesses pretty well. People underestimate the crap out of Ozai. I honestly think that Ozai would be able to easily take Zuko if both didn't have bending even if Zuko had his swords. He's clearly extremely well versed in martial arts and using weapons considering he taught both Zuko and Azula a great deal of everything they know. In terms of strength, he's cut to friggin shreds and in the finale we see just how great he is at taking some heavy damage from a full power Avatar's bending. This isn't even mentioning how many traps and secret allies he might have just like Azula had the Dai Li. Now in terms of lightning...well I don't think Zuko had him necessarily pinned either. Zuko literally hits him with the Lightning, and sure he doesn't go for his heart or anything, but Ozai recovers almost immediately after Zuko retreats (which is hella quick considering it's friggin LIGHTNING). In the finale (spoilers ig) Iroh says that he doesn't know if he could beat Ozai one-on-one. This guy is the master of both lightning generation and redirection and even he isn't sure he could beat Ozai even if both were given a comet boost. Ozai also straight up generates a crazy amount of lightning with zero effort literally a second after the eclipse ends. Like...my guys is friggin Sozin level nuts even without a comet. TLDR: Ozai is friggin cracked and deserved to be spirit-nerfed.
Right, Ozai is pretty strong. I agree with everything but one thing. The only gripe I have is that Zuko did not hit Ozai with lightning. Go to 8:40 and press . (period) until you get to the moment of impact. It impacts the stairs, and the huge concussive forces push Ozai up. I also think that immediately recovering from such a blow is in line with the types of blows the heroes take as well.
@@austinellison3766 Fair enough, I always saw it as him getting hit without it being fully properly redirected because Zuko was inexperienced and had just gotten his bending back but I do see now how it more hits the stairs. It is hard often to judge character durability in animation but I do think that Ozai is at least shown to be able to take a great amount of damage well while still not being superhuman of course.
Yeah I am 99% sure that Zuko deliberately strikes the ground in front of Ozai. I think subtextually/metatextually it’s representing the sheer amount of self control and mental discipline Zuko has come to command that he sticks to his decision not to strike his father back even with the power to seriously harm him there and then, in self defence and everything. Honestly I’ve watched that scene so many times just because it’s so amazingly well written and voiced by Dante Basco and Mark Hamill. Something I love is that the animators (frequently) do a lot of the visual work of characterising the people in this story and the synergy between performance and animation in this series is usually second to none. Zuko has progressed from not fighting his father out of what we can infer is fear and a misinformed sense of respect, to not fighting him out of an awareness of the emotional damage he has already suffered and the self control necessary to avoid making that any worse. People often talk about how Zuko faces his abuser and confronts the emotional blackmail and sabotage he’s been beset by his entire life here, how meaningful it is that he has the courage to stand up to Ozai. It’s also worth remembering that this is the same character who used to lose his temper in every other scene he was in and win or lose Zuko always got worked up about any fight he got into. It’s actually beautiful that we see him overcome his own weaknesses here as well as the man who’s often exacerbated his emotional strife. Zuko comes to say what he wants and leaves without losing his cool and walks away better off than the man who spent the entire encounter waiting to be able to attack his son. I’ll never get over just how much of a personal mountain you’d have to climb to be capable of what Zuko does here. One of the greatest scenes in the entire show.
I think Zuko missed Ozai because it was literally the first time he'd tried redirecting lightning while in an extremely high pressure situation while also not expecting to need to do it
Then the gang (and the invasion as a whole) would be in serious trouble. Ozai would probably send all his troops after them, and they’d have no time to recoup.
I’m glad Aang didn’t kill Ozai. Death would be him getting off way too easy. Taking his bending away is a fate worse than death and I like that he is most definitely going to suffer losing all his power.
Maybe if they'd gone full Napoleon with it and sent him to the most remote corner of the world to contemplate his failure, that'd be one thing, but as is it just seems kinda weak.
Ozai totally would have whooped Aang in a one on one fight at that point in the show. He has to be at least as strong as Azula and Iroh. Maybe even stronger. Aang without the avatar state, without being able to re-direct light, and with zero ability to fire bend would have been toast.
I feel the same. I always saw ozai beeing able to conjure lightning so fast even as firebending was just returning and likelly not at full power yet as a real show of power.
He would’ve had Toph to help him which could definitely make it possible but I feel like Sokka would’ve been in danger in the middle of that. But for all we know Azula could’ve joined him and made the match Ozai & Azula vs Aang , Toph, and Sokka. Idk about it y’all.
@@TMTM7 Oh totally, we're just talking about who could actually beat whom in a fight. If lives were at stake. But yeah Iroh would just cripple him. It's annoying that nobody can talk about crippling or maiming people on shows like this because it's a convenient and sensible way to avoid killing. And it is essentially what Aang does in the end.
You say the "i gotts try" line feels like a triumphant moment and I totally agree. I think a part of what makes it land so well is that its the first time that Aang feels like he CAN face the firelord. A big moment of him coming into his own.
My big problem with the invasion is that if the eclipse only lasted 8 minutes, what made the invaders think the Fire Nation wouldn't just pretend to surrender for 8 minutes? Sure it's a war crime, but the Fire Nation isn't above being war criminals.
I think they planned to force Ozai and the Fire Nation into a corner and make them surrender, then take control of the capital and imprison them to prevent them from retaliating, and then hopefully, the other troops in the colonies, Omashu and Ba Sing Se, would be forced to back out when word got out that the Avatar defeated the Fire Lord, so by the time Sozin's Comet arrived, the Fire Nation wouldn't have a full military assembled to launch an attack on the Earth Kingdom. Of course, they didn't account for the airships that would've turned the tides regardless. It would've been a temporary victory at best, but provided the heroes a much needed edge in ending the war.
As an abuse survivor, the scene where Zuko confronts Ozai has always been my favorite scene in the entire show, even when I was too young to understand the implications behind the scene and my own life at that point. I fucking love Zuko man.
you said in the drill that soka slapping him is the only phisical incounter betwin man to man but in s2 e1 when zuko and iroh trying escape azula's ship iroh clearly punched the soldiers with no bending
Bro, that "Hey they shouldn't know what seconds, minutes, and hours are" logic freaking blew my mind. That's probably the biggest and ONLY error in the entire series, definitely no lunar discontinuity or anything like that.
12:28 He's right! But I like that it doesn't feel like a 100% downer, because there's such a massive payoff - not for the Gaang, but for Zuko. Even though the Gaang doesn't know it, Zuko is now officially a Good Guy.
7:23 I have to highly disagree. Now I dunno if this is a joke, if it is it flew over my head all whoosh style. Later on in the season nearing the end Iroh gives a pretty good reason as to why he (and more importantly, zuko) can't kill the firelord themselves. History will only view it as needless violence quenching out needless violence, a son taking his father's life just to take the throne. It wouldn't have been a win, it just would've upset more people. It was the avatar who had to put him down, as the avatar is the sort of gatekeeper of peace. That's my pov
I will say that Mai and Ty Lee disappear whenever Azula is going to interact with Ozai in any way. It's like she's either avoiding her father realizing she didn't do everything alone, or she's trying to avoid them catching Ozai's attention.
3:00 FUCKING THANK YOU. The fact that the Earth King was stupid enough to tell some randos that he just met about possibly one of the most important tactical decisions in the past 100 years is bad enough, but then he somehow just fucking FORGOT to mention to the gaang that "oh yeah by the way you might wanna scratch that invasion plan cause I kinda fucked it already"? Worst character in the whole series, and, getting into comics lore, there is absolutely no way this dude should have EVER been allowed anywhere near a position of power again
When Aang takes the glider to get Toph and Sokka over that pool of lava This might look more dangerous than making a bridge, but considering what we learned from the episode "The northern air temple" gliding is a lot easier when it's over hot air, so even though we know from different scenes that gliding with two people is difficult and 3 might be impossible, it's 100% logical that it works in this circumstance
You didn't mention this in the video, but one of my favorite details in these two episodes is the scene when Zuko is leaving his room to confront Ozai. The way he looks back and raises his hood is a direct parallel to the flashback scene in Zuko Alone when his mother leaves.
I’ve always loved this episode and the last especially when aang redirects ozias lighting the shock he experiences is directly due to zuko as he says “I’m going to teach the avatar everything he needs to know to defeat you” then redirect lightning for all ozia knows the only person able to redirect lightning is zuko then aang does it against him proving that zuko made good on his promise
I also like the juxtaposition between Zuko running away from/rejecting his "destiny" after realizing it was wrong and Aang finally standing up and embracing his destiny as the Avatar instead of running.
I think Toph calmly bending down to use her earth sense, is her calmly listening for other vibrations vs. In this episode she creates one big vibration (like echolocation). She used the first kind before listening for the vibrations Katarra and zuko are making but since the bunker won't move she does the second kind
0:06 Even in real life, this is pretty common. Most combat encounters between two powerful militaries with range capability would consist of sitting in cover, waiting, pushing slowly. Sure, they're on a time table, but I'm sure they're all well aware of when they need to be doing what for things to progress orderly.
Even if Zuko was willing to kill Ozai, the way he was challenging Zuko to do it seemed like he had something planned out. Perhaps he was going to bring up Ursa anyways so Zuko couldn’t kill him without knowing what happened to her?
The talking on the battlefield actually makes some sense, even in big open combat there's always some type of battle line where the fighting takes place while there are pockets of relative safety where the leaders are planning and giving orders, it's a cartoon so it gets some leeway as to how close these pockets are to the fight.
8:32 I would just like to point out that when Zuko confronts Ozai and redirects his lightning that must have terrifying for Ozai because it's Iroh's technique that he learned after he became enlightened and probably didn't get into any lightning fights with Ozai or even show him this technique so imagine your Ozai and are insanely strong and skilled then your weak disappointment of a son almost kills you with some shit you've never seen before and don't even know is possible.
Factsss well said he was going for kill to zulo and never taugh him it or mentioned it plus he never seen zulo actually fight the whole series amd watch him grow ozai was beyond disbelief he prolly know for a fact his brother iroh taught zuko that thats a representation that iroh is the father ozai neva could be⚡️
I am fully convinced this is actually Cinemasins' fifth channel or something. "That sounds like an 80s metal song" or a spicy Albanian cola drink? Also, it makes sense that Toph is only slightly better than average at telling when someone is lying, since actual polygraph tests only average about 62% because they both respond to changes in a person's physiology that are also triggered by any kinds of stress, like being locked in an interrogation room being grilled by the police.
It is funny that Toph then is a literal polygraph. Not in the sense that it is a skill that came out of nowhere, but that her skill set implies she has the same capabilities and success as a polygraph.
Just noticed the power scaling of having Ozai quickdraw that much lightning during the eclipse. Normal firebenders can't do anything right now, and Ozai is still blasting out advanced techniques.
One thing to mention here is Azula, all she did was distract the Gaang from reaching her father, which why she ran off afterwards knowing that the danger of the invasion is over. But what has to be especially mentioned here is her acknowledgement of the danger that non-benders have. She quickly realized that Sokka is the leader of that operation, so where he goes, there also go Toph and Aang. Which is why when Sokka noticed she is just wasting their time, she attacked him with words to keep him on her tail. AND who die she attack first when firebending returned? Sokka, because she is quite aware of the danger he is.
I don’t remember a whole lot about the earlier episodes’ animations and shading but I wanna point out that in the scene where Aang is talking with the small group before facing the Fire Lord, the really serious scene, the shading on his face makes him look so much more mature. It makes his face look hard and more defined. Also, when Aang addresses his failures and flies off in Appa with the group, Katara’s face is shaded the same way. She has a similar loving facial expression but a little more mature, and on top of that the shading makes her look more defined. Plus her hair seems like it has changed slightly but enough to drive home the maturity. Combined with Aang’s deeper voice, I think this season really hits the maturity well.
I think that another really important reason Zuko doesn't attack his father is that he's smart enough to realize that if he kills his own father and takes the throne, he'd be repeating his family's old patterns. That's exactly how his father came to power, and if Zuko did the same thing, it would be seen as just another royal family power struggle and a continuation of the status quo, whereas if the Avatar does the job, the reasons behind the elimination of Ozai would be much more clear to the world. Aang killing Ozai is justice for the world and for his people. Zuko killing him is a power grab, just like Iroh explains in the finale when he justifies not doing the job himself.
This episode made me cry. Multiple times. If someone really looks at it, like you described it. Zuko, aang, letting everyone get captured. Not knowing if they live. So epic. Zukos lighting redirect is a favorite scene and is so powerful
you know ive been rewatching avatar and got to this episode something i really liked about the zuko ozai conversation when zuko enters ozai doesnt even call him son when he walks in he calls him prince zuko just to drive the point home that he doesnt think of him as his son but just another person god i love this show
you'd be surprised how big of a part of war is just waiting around while others are fighting. then you get into a gunfight for a bit, then you wait again for ages.
Minutes, seconds and hours predate clocks by a very significant degree. The ancient Babylonians also used sexagesimal system for minutes and seconds with 24 hours, although I think they had different names for them. Hours and minutes were measurable by this method, seconds were at first more of a concept than an exact measurement. The earliest use of these measurements was with sundials, not clocks.
I really love how the show frames how one nation can dominate the others in a prolonged military conflict. It'd seem unreasonable unless it was explained as well as it was. The air nomads got kneecapped in a surprise attack, the water tribe seems too small in population to ever pose a serious threat, and the earth nation is putting up a respectable, but losing fight, taking hit after hit and slowly going down.
7:05 Zuko is amazing with those swords. Good enough to infiltrate the prison Aang is in which has hundreds of guards and the most accurate archers, to match maybe even beat Jet who beat Aang in the tree tops, and possibly enough to beat Piandao. I think it's safe to say that Ozai knew the guards wouldn't stand a chance. Still makes more sense for them to be in earshot to escape maybe
8:34 One thing I love about this show is the subtle references you don’t notice until someone else points it out to you. I saw on a blog recently that Zuko confronting Ozai mirrors Roku and Sozin in regards to their talk about the Fire Nation colonies. Sozin attacks Roku in a similar fashion to Ozai attacking Zuko. Roku spares Sozin and deflects the attack, like Zuko does to Ozai. Then Sozin smashes against a wall, which we also see Ozai do. I’ve never noticed this before, and the fact it’s gone unnoticed even after watching this show 20+ times is incredible

That's a really good point actually, since we don't see much of Ozai bending
Yeah a lot of Ozai's power is just implied, though strongly implied. it's unthinkable he wouldn't be stronger than azula, and we know they can't quite beat her, so
wish we saw more of a non comet ozai but i have doubt he could do a few things: He could probably fly without the comet (hell azula could) and his fire would probably be overwhelming. Dude is lethal
Ozai is also probably a great fighter without bending. The way he just invited Zuko to kill him, he was probably ready with a counter-attack.

Like you mentioned, at the end of this episode they lost their biggest advantage in the eclipse, allies are captured, and Sozin’s comet approaches. The only real hope for the Gaang and the whole world really was? Any guesses? Yes! Zuko of course. Dude literally was the last hope for everybody. maybe, Azula doesn't trust Mai and Tylee when she doesn't have her fire bending.

@@thegamesforreal1673 nice video and
You raise some good points.
@@thegamesforreal1673 mai was still frightened of azula evident in the line "I love zuko more than I fear you"

HOLY
Zuko in his thirties looks bigger than Ozai to be honest.
This made my jaw drop

So he has to clear backblast every time he wants to sprint? Neat
And speed does not help you anyways id you cant stop before breaking your nose on the concrete walls
Aang gives new meaning to the phrase "clear the runway"
@@peanutbutter7721remember when the sun came up in the North Pole and zuko got boosted
And with a slightly bigger sliver, Zuko takes that lightning no problem. Beast

In defense of the eclipse glasses, to not look at the sun would mean to look down or keep your back constantly to the sun. Both of these methods will affect your combat ability.
It shouldn’t be much different from how the sun is normally
dude, how do you take a walk outside during a sunny day? shuffling backwards, ass facing the sun? compared to that, an eclipse makes the light dimmer, not brighter, so if you don't need special glasses on the street, you won't need eclipse glasses either as long as you don't stare directly into the sun for minutes
@@Catchcamatian Its about the moment when the eclipse ends.

I would think that Azula will ascend and she is going to simply lay waste The Earth Kingdom and turn Ba Sing Se to Azula Jokyō.
I would assume they would just enforce an occupation of the fire nation until a new fire load could be found.
I always forget that this entire part is only halfway thru Book 3. We still have all of wholesome Zuko to go through. Yea Baby!
I always think of the last 10 episodes kind of like a book 4

Oh god please legitimately do a “aang hasn’t killed anyone” montage PLEASE. I recently rewatched the series in full with my fiancé and pointed out every time Aang did, in fact, take a life and it would be amazing to see them in a montage.
On a related note, we also had a running joke of Appa being okay with murder
I don’t think it was a joke, he is just waiting for the right episode and I think has mentioned it prior too.
Appa has killed several people, he’s more than okay with it. In fact, he lives for getting a kill.
That man is dead, appa killed a man
"Appa being okay with murder" what animal isn't okay with murder? It's not even really murder, because murder is specific to people killing people- animals killing is in their nature, so like... no? This point is moot haha
It’s good cop bad cop with Aang and Appa.
Not to mention Mark Hamil’s voice acting as Ozai. He’s amazing at sinister voices.
@@JM-us3fr You can't be serious! You are right as well! How did I not know that! Cool
Dante Basco from the Devil May Cry series is incredibly talented.
Agility vs speed.

No, he knew about the eclipse 100%. He even warned that guard that brought him extra food about the eclipse.
Can we also just talk about how incredible Mark Hammil is as ozi?
he truly is one hell of an actor.

Aang’s speech at the end is probably my favorite moment of the series. Taking responsibility, voice acting; everything about it is so good.

When Zuko redirected the lighting back at Ozai...
favorite part in the whole series.
So satisfying to see Zuko's growth manifest like that.
I always felt like Azula's lie isn't a real lie. Like I can definitely see someone say something that outrageous with a calm ass demeanor.
Does not make any difference for she just wastes more of the gangs time
You mean, she might really by a four-hundred foot tall purple platypus bear with pink horns and silver wings?
@@amirshulman4676 sure, that also would explain a lots of her uniqueness ... we need to bring that theory to one of those theory channels

I agree. He has no defense against lightning
He also wouldn't chose to kill and doesn't yet know the turtle thing, so he'd be taken out that way too if even came to it.
(4:48) The secret technique: *Gender Bending*
The fact that ozai really went for the kill against zuko, like we all know he's a bad guy but damn
But remember, we learned a crucial fact, no one can surprise the firelord
I think Zuko missed Ozai because it was literally the first time he'd tried redirecting lightning while in an extremely high pressure situation while also not expecting to need to do it
Another thought that crossed my mind and made itself at home: What if Sokka had killed Azula when they had her captured?
Then the gang (and the invasion as a whole) would be in serious trouble. Ozai would probably send all his troops after them, and they’d have no time to recoup.
looking forward to that "Aang's never killed anyone" montage
I’m glad Aang didn’t kill Ozai. Death would be him getting off way too easy. Taking his bending away is a fate worse than death and I like that he is most definitely going to suffer losing all his power.
Maybe if they'd gone full Napoleon with it and sent him to the most remote corner of the world to contemplate his failure, that'd be one thing, but as is it just seems kinda weak.
>fate worse than death
you make sokka cry
Ozai totally would have whooped Aang in a one on one fight at that point in the show.
He has to be at least as strong as Azula and Iroh. Maybe even stronger. Aang without the avatar state, without being able to re-direct light, and with zero ability to fire bend would have been toast.
I feel the same. I always saw ozai beeing able to conjure lightning so fast even as firebending was just returning and likelly not at full power yet as a real show of power.
add to that the lack of water in the cave that could've countered the fire
I imagine Iroh is a slightly stronger bender, but yeah.. he's gotta be stronger than his daughter, he would make sure of that.
Can we take a moment to appreciate the amazing and hilarious patron reads at the end? Just icing on an already awesome and entertaining cake.
I get chills ever time i see zuko redirect that lighting. CHILLZ MAN
You say the "i gotts try" line feels like a triumphant moment and I totally agree.
It would've been a temporary victory at best, but provided the heroes a much needed edge in ending the war.
they don't actually have rules of war. you know that, right?
To be fair they didn't have rules of war and if they did the gang isn't opposed to committing war crimes either
Its implied that Iroh beat his ass yeah, but did we see Iroh do it? No
he said man on man, hand to face contact. Iroh's punch in that episode hits the helm and not the skin, which is what I think he meant by that
Actually iron uses his bag and swings it at the guard’s face so he doesn’t actually punch him
You can see it if you watch it in slow mo
Bro, that "Hey they shouldn't know what seconds, minutes, and hours are" logic freaking blew my mind. That's probably the biggest and ONLY error in the entire series, definitely no lunar discontinuity or anything like that.
12:28 He's right!
But I like that it doesn't feel like a 100% downer, because there's such a massive payoff - not for the Gaang, but for Zuko. Even though the Gaang doesn't know it, Zuko is now officially a Good Guy.
"An eclipse should count as a full moon, right?" Nope, it's a new moon. They finally used a different moon phase even if it's by technicality.
Man I love all the physiological plays done by the villains this episode
I always love when you have bad guys who succeed when they use their brains, and typically fail when they try to just slam down force.
Technically a solar eclipse would be a perfect new moon so hey there’s that
This is probably the series’s only explicit new moon.

The symbology in this show is damn amazing. I always forget that this show is A KIDS SHOW HOW LITERALLY HOW
I’ve always loved this episode and the last especially when aang redirects ozias lighting the shock he experiences is directly due to zuko as he says “I’m going to teach the avatar everything he needs to know to defeat you” then redirect lightning for all ozia knows the only person able to redirect lightning is zuko then aang does it against him proving that zuko made good on his promise

@@friendlyneighbourhoodbridg1354 exactly! she stomps her foot makes one vibration and see how long it takes to get back, like echo location haha
Yes, and/or the guards are actually waiting in the wings.
The talking on the battlefield actually makes some sense, even in big open combat there's always some type of battle line where the fighting takes place while there are pockets of relative safety where the leaders are planning and giving orders, it's a cartoon so it gets some leeway as to how close these pockets are to the fight.

I would just like to point out that when Zuko confronts Ozai and redirects his lightning that must have terrifying for Ozai because it's Iroh's technique that he learned after he became enlightened and probably didn't get into any lightning fights with Ozai or even show him this technique so imagine your Ozai and are insanely strong and skilled then your weak disappointment of a son almost kills you with some shit you've never seen before and don't even know is possible.
@@iantaakalla8180 the same success rate, which is 100% as evidenced here
Just noticed the power scaling of having Ozai quickdraw that much lightning during the eclipse.
Iroh said it himself when asked if he would take down Ozai. history would see it as a brother killing a brother for power.
This episode made me cry. Multiple times. If someone really looks at it, like you described it. Zuko, aang, letting everyone get captured. Not knowing if they live. So epic. Zukos lighting redirect is a favorite scene and is so powerful
I can never not get excited for the Zuko confronting Ozai scene. Straight up one of the best moments of the show!
you know ive been rewatching avatar and got to this episode something i really liked about the zuko ozai conversation when zuko enters ozai doesnt even call him son when he walks in he calls him prince zuko just to drive the point home that he doesnt think of him as his son but just another person god i love this show

you'd be surprised how big of a part of war is just waiting around while others are fighting.
then you get into a gunfight for a bit, then you wait again for ages.
2:48 I mean, they do have Toph the lie detector with them, and he's no Azula who can both convincingly lie and keep calm under pressure.
We gonna see Zuko being an absolute badass

They can pin a tree to a fly from 100 yards away without hurting the tree (this is one of my favorite edits of this)
@@dread_wolf2301 um I still think you slightly misquoted lol. Why'd the tree be hurt? An arrow ain't powerful enough to hurt a tree
@@robbiesrevelations3096 it’s a quote from an edited version of the saying
0:45 The concept of an hour being measured as 1/24 of a solar day dates back to Ancient Greece.
fun little detail the eclipse glasses are modeled after inuit snow glasses
