- This video is the secret to perfectly level plywood subfloors: DIY plywood and concrete method. After watching this video you can understand how to make a subfloor levelling with plywood and concrete self-levelling floor compound. In this particular example, I saved for customers 23 bags of self-leveling compound which is equivalent to around $2000 including labour and material!

How to Make Subfloor Leveling with Plywood and Concrete Self Leveling Compound MrYoucandoityourself
Love your leveling skillz man. I've leveled small bathroom to prep for my tile work but nothing that extensive. Mad props, keep up the good work.
Thank you so much, my friend!
If you need to make wood subfloor leveling and save money, here are the tips how you can do it with plywood and self-leveling compound. Do you have another ideas? Share your experience!
MrYoucandoityourself Nice job!
Can I use play wood for installing on the concrete floor to save money for self-levelling concrete ?
Hi, Maxim, this video about it! Each 3/4 inch plywood shit, same like 6 bags self-leveling underlayment.
MrYoucandoityourself but you installed plywood on the wood floor. Can I just glue plywood with PL to the concrete floor? And after that pour self-levelling concrete on plywood?
Thank you for a quick response
Hi Maxim, Yes, you can. For your safety, use flooring glue for plywood installation over the concrete. I did it always.
plywood shit )) sheet ))
I did something similar in my restroom using 3/4 and 1/2 inch plywood to level some of it out before using self-leveling cement. Though of the idea myself and now that I saw your video I feel comfortable knowing I did the right thing. I had about a 5/8 in slope over 4 feet. and didnt want to weight it down too much with only self-leveling cement to fill.
Hi Manuel, it's great when we are thinking the same way! Thanks for your comment! I am really appreciate!
I have 1" difference on my floor and probably have to do this kind of leveling. I still will try to sand down at least 1/4" on high spots then use plywood and self-leveling compound. Questions: did some of leveling compound went under plywood? Can you put nail-down 3/4" HWF planks on that? I am afraid cement will crumble from the penetrating nails and staples and will create specific noise when you walk the floor. Suggestion: slow down camera on staff you are using (primer, compound) so we can see it (you listed everything in description but seeing labels very helpful). Thank you very much! You are great help!
Hi, you can't use nail down over the concrete leveling. You have to choose another option - glue down or floating type of installation.
@@MrYoucandoityourself I meant the cement of leveling compound.
Sir, are you leaving an expansion gap where your new plywood pieces meet? I see some leave 1/4”, others abut the sheets tight to one another. Curious to know how much space you leave.
I left around 1/4”
Nice job, I have some low spots in my home & it's too low to crawl under might try to cut floor out & level a bit, then use the leveling compound afterwards. Thanks.
Hi, you’re welcome!
Is it okay if self leveler is poured over dried self leveler without primer?
You have to put primer every time when you put next coating. Thanks
Where you buy that 10 feet screed bar at ?
In tile supply store.
What kind of flooring did you put on over that fix?
Glue down engineered hardwood floor.
Plywood underneath that thin layer of self-levelling compound is a good recipe for all sorts of issues.
Hi Rob, yes, you are right!
I have the same issue going on and want to put new hardwood flooring in but how heavy is that concrete and will the weigh put pressure on the joist underneath?
I did this floor in 2017, week ago I did estimate for other rooms for leveling and installation. In this master bedroom everything fine, furnished and owner very happy. No any overweight issue. Thanks!
Hey man I love the work you do. Can you help me. Can I use self leveling only over wood subfloor? If yes.. Do I need to apply any primer before so the concrete get stick to wood? Thanks🙏🔨🛠
You have to use primer! This is the rule! Thanks !
@@MrYoucandoityourself what type of primer? Thanka🙏
For Mapei - T primer. Thanks!
Hey man great work. Where are you located?
Vancouver, Canada.
can hardwood floors be placed on top of this? I heard with self leveling you can only install tile on top??
Here it is - ua-cam.com/video/ambZmbJdgls/v-deo.html
What size screws do you recommend? I have a slope that is that varies from 0.75” to 1.25”. So I’m adding attaching some plywood underlayment (0.5” and 0.75”) to the subfloor just like you did in this video. I have no idea how thick is my subfloor. Thanks.
Regular subfloor plywood 5/8".
How much would I be looking at some ting like this for a similar sized room in the UK? Just removed old flooring to reveal that the damn floor is not level… and already way over budget for this! 😔
All calculations is different.
If you cover this room with anything other than carpet, it's going to be higher than kitchen tile since you wanted the uncovered floor even with a finished floor.
Hi, this is a master bedroom, and one side was lower than another one, plus tile in the bathroom and around the fireplace was too high. I just fix it and install the glue down hardwood floor. Here is the video - ua-cam.com/video/CZB5Pvwxg0I/v-deo.html
That's very good work. That would take the average person 2wks. You've been at it for awhile.
Thanks!
Hi, I have existing subfloor that need to be self level before laying plywood on top as a subfloor for 3/4” hardwood floor. can I use self levelling concrete to level the original subfloor?
Hi, yes, you can do it, but then you can only glue down plywood.
What are you putting in the gaps, Silicone?
I put regular white caulk.
@@MrYoucandoityourself Can you use expanding foam?
@@theandroids Yes, you can, but expanding foam left some hols, and compound can flow downstairs. I got this experience already. Thanks!
@@MrYoucandoityourself Ok thanks.
can self level be leveled with a slight slope ,like can you screen it just before it gets hard to keep a slight slope on the floor rather than a leveled floor?
Hi Mario, very good question! Yes, you can add less water, and compound can't float as usual. I did it before many times.
Hi I have 1 question if you added extra plywood on top main subfloor, will your frame able to hold it since there extra weight. Thanks
Furniture heavier than plywood, but you don't worry about it. Am I right?
Love the videos. I have 2 questions. 1. What is the benefit of your bucket contraption that you use with the vaccum?
2. Do you ever have to tell someone you can't level the floor because the weight of the concrete exceeds what their house looks like it bear?
Hi, 1. - Cyclone Dust Collector - amzn.to/2RWPKx7
2.Yes, if I need put many bags. I always offer better choice like on this video or use foam like here - ua-cam.com/video/_Q_YnKDhrDQ/v-deo.html
@@MrYoucandoityourself thank you, your videos have been an amazing resource for repairing my old house!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
And one more question: can this kind of leveling be done on a second floor or only on a slab?
This video I did exactly on second floor.
Here is another two videos I did on this floor:
1. ua-cam.com/video/ambZmbJdgls/v-deo.html - about glue down,
2. ua-cam.com/video/CZB5Pvwxg0I/v-deo.html - here is installation.
I hope it help you.
@@MrYoucandoityourself Great! But contractor just said I don't have to level my second floor subfloor - just nail down and glue each second plank (I have bamboo 5/8" click engineered 5").
I have seen many artists who are doing the floor. I am one from them, but for 5" wide planks nail down we always add extra PL400, 45-degree lines across the floor, to avoid bumping in the future. Our BC flooring association recommended use nail and glue for 3.5" and wider. But I can't change your rules. Each area follows own ways. Thanks for your question!
Thank you very much again! Extremely helpful!
Enjoy your work!
That was a really great video at a great job good prep had a beautiful finish 👍.
I will try your method and product on a bathroom I have to level thank you 👌👍⚒️
Hi, thanks for your comment! Good luck with your project!
What is tool @ 07:46?
- Spike Roller - amzn.to/2hTv8iP
Good job ! can you mix this stuff a little thicker so its not so runny?
Yes you can!
Самая дешёвая установка - это плавающий пол, затем идёт nail down, следующий по цене nail down with glue, ну и дороже всего glue down, потому-то клей не дешев и работа подороже.
maybe a dumb question but what if somewhere in the future you have to pull up a piece of the floor? can you cut through the hardened self leveler?
You need to remove concrete first and then cut plywood.
Hello I have laid leveling compound on a garage floor but I have not used enough and the compound I have put down needs to be raised a few mm as I have not used enough. Can I top it up? it has only been put down 24 hours but I need the level to be level with some concrete that goes round the sides of the garage. please help
Hey you Have 35 links but not for what you are actually mixing ? Is that concrete?
I mixed Mapei self leveling compound Novoplan 2 plus.
Great video. But you have concrete under the subfloor. I’m nervous about self leveler with wood framed subfloor.
Hi, this is a regular house with wood framed subfloor. I did this leveling for glue down installation.
Excellent job
Thanks a lot!
Great skills man
Thanks!
Can I use Mapei Novoplan 2 Plus directly on wooden floor? I guess I need some resin-based self leveling material which is more expensive.
Hi, I did this leveling directly to wooden subfloor with Novoplan 2 Plus.
Hello, thank you for fast reply. I have asked Mapei and they told me only Fiberplan is an option, which is much more expensive. I'll ask them whether Novoplan is also suitable.
what is the item that you had on a stick during the second pour? sounded/appeared to be some type of roller or was it simply a flat blade?

thanks
You are welcome!
@@MrYoucandoityourself squeegee
I have zero knowledge about this process. But when I see that much concrete on top of a wooden floor, all I can imagine is massive cracking and crumbling from deflection. Everyone seems to think this video is great. So, please tell me what I'm missing.
Subfloor should be without movement and you don’t get any cracks. Thanks
agreed. wood floors expand and contract. thats why they dont butt the edges of subfloor.
Most self leveling underlayments can withstand some serious deflection without cracking.
What was the broom like tool you were using to move the leveling compound? Also the small saw with vacuum attachments

Hello! Thanks for this video! How thick were each piece of plywood? I calculated how much it would take to level my floor up to 2 inches with 1/4 plywood in a 150sq foot room and it costs almost $500 just for the plywood! Could I use a thicker plywood so I don't need so many levels? If so, how thick of plywood is safe to use in this situation? Thanks again!
Hi Vivian, you can use any thickness of plywood, from 1’ to 1/8”. So if you need 2’ , you can put two layers 1’ plywood with opposite direction, don’t forget screw and glue each layer. Thanks
Thank you!
Great job as usual and you do it as a one man crew! Do you ever have a helper? I can understand working alone with all the tedious and fine work but moving all the materials/tools can take a toll. Do you have a shop for some custom fabrication or all on-site work?
So many questions... Are you going to write an article about my business in your local newspaper? 😀
I happen to work for a large manufacturer of self leveler products. You are supposed to install a wire mesh first over wood before putting the leveler down. I am shocked you do not know this. You are usually very knowledgeable. Read the label.
You also forgot to use a bonding adhesive. The product is going to crack but you will be long gone by then.
If you watch carefully, I gave all instructions on how to use primer and compound as well. Thanks
How do u Guarantee that won’t leak to the basement

I have two questions, if you could be so kind to answer please.. If my intentions are to put ceramic tile floors, can I put cement board on top of the self leveling concrete? I am worried the self leveling concrete will break underneath the cement boards when I put the screws to secure it?
Hi Ovie, you have to use anti-fracture membrane for tile protection. The information you can find on UA-cam as well. Thanks!
Before you put cement boards down I suggest you consult with www.johnbridge.com/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1
A cement based toping (even new products) over a flexing floor never stays no matter what we do. 28 years experience. But if u are aware that its not permanent then go it.
Yes, you are right, but I never did leveling over the plywood if this subfloor has any movement. First of all I screw all subfloor to avoid noise and movement and then did leveling. I've never restored what I did before.
@@MrYoucandoityourself timber is a naturally expanding and shrinking material compared to a concrete big deferences. But thanks for your vid and what are the other options. This is the easier way compared to leveling joust and footings
This method is very good for glue down and floating floor installation. For nail down we have different story.
