  • How to level flooring. Leveling uneven plywood subfloor that's really unlevel and needs to planed before we can level the floor. This video is from our Acacia wood flooring installation. The problem with the floor was in one of the bedrooms on the second floor and the room had a plywood subfloor.
On one of the outer walls, two of the plywood sheets came together uneven. One of the plywood sheet was much higher then the sheet next to it and then the whole sheet dipped down over an inch as it ended at the outer wall. So before we could fix the dip we needed to plane the two sheets to make them the same height. We used a Ryobi planer to do the planning. Once we corrected the unevenness we then poured some self lever to fix the dip. We used Mapie self leveler and a long board as a straight edge to apply the concrete.

I have seen that stuff cause plywood to swell up due to the moisture, and then you have a really big problem. Need to seal the plywood to be safe.

Thanks, Had framers build a platform for a home theater and they missed inserting one tongue of an OSB into another in a two foot section. Thought a planer might work, so seeing your process suggests it will. :)

I would like to point out that before using either a planer or a belt sander to take down plywood over a joist it is IMPERATIVE you make sure all fasteners in the area have been removed. No need to ask me how I know this, just take my word that you don't want to learn the way I did.

This looks so involved. I was hoping to just get away with planning - and not pouring self leveler

The leveling compound isn't as easy as you make it seem. You only have like a 10 minute work time. For small jobs it may be fine for a handy diy'er, but if you have no experience using this stuff and have to use more than one batch for a larger area then it gets complicated if you don't have help and a system down. You need to use a clean bucket for each batch. Sure you can use a barrel to make larger batches but you still have 10 minutes. You screw up then you have a whole new problem. And this stuff is not cheap also.
For someone who has a experience and the proper equipment this

Wondering how much leveling you can expect from a grossly unlevel floor due to settling of foundation. Looking to maximize what amount of leveling that is possible.

I researched that model of planer. How do you start in the middle of a piece of wood with that kickstand on the bottom?

Nice, but do we need to apply primer before the self leveling underlayment??

Your concret is no longer availble.... any other reccomendations.? I thought the wood needed to "breath" so it did not swell up.... how does that work?
