The Toccata and Fugue is part of the recital Cyprien Katsaris gave at the International Piano Festival of Shanghai Conservatory of Music on 4 October 2005. The DVD of that recital features the first video recordings in the world of the 3 following transcriptions: Katsaris’ own version of Bach’s Toccata and Fugue BWV 565 we see in this video, Schubert’s Ballet Music “Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus” arranged by Ernst Pauer, and the Overture “The Queen of Cyprus” of Jacques-François Fromental Halévy arranged by… Richard Wagner (!), who was an admirer of Halévy. In addition to a number of lesser-known works of Liszt, there is also a Chinese piece which Katsaris learned at the very last moment, an hour before the concert started, especially for the Shanghai audience.

In terms of musicality, only Busoni's transcription can match Maestro Katsaris'. The latter is unique because the characteristics of an organ were honestly and fully transferred to a piano, i.e. an organ and a piano in one. And of course, Maestro Katsaris' performance is out of this mortal world, as always.
His separation of voices is the best par none.
Well said. WOW
As my own devil's advocate, you have to be astonished not only at the speed of his fingers or his hands spanning 3 octaves each consecutive 1/16 note.
What is incredible is that in spite of his breakneck speed, his control of dynamics doesn't seem to suffer a bit, and he is still able to bring out almost all the intended voicing in the Fugue (a part of it is lot due to sheer rapidness, and another due to the resonance of parallel octaves (or a couple of tenths?) on the immediate following themes.
Katsaris is, indeed, the master of voicing.

4:40 That sudden decrescendo is incredible!
Ineguagliabile oggi.
UA-cam need a "Epic Like" button for such an epic performance/transcription
AMAZING FINGERS AND DEXTERITY...........................what a gift! Thank you for virtuoso pianists like Katsaris. BRAVO!
+Patrick Macy it's not even the fingers. it's the wrists.. for the octaves.. he plays the fugue them in octaves..
What a true genius. I am in complete awe.
Wow! My first hearing on this pianist. 👌🏻🖤🎶
Mr Katsaris. You are incredible. I listened to Bach's piano concerto interpretation of yours during my youth over and over furthermore this thanscription is awesome. Love and respect. You are a living legend💙🧜♂️🌊🙏
Being an Irishman there have been very few times I have been speechless, this is one of them. Profound respect from Ireland 🇮🇪.
no one care my man
In the fugue it sounds like an organ. Incredible !
Katsaris is Brilliant !
Katsaris understands that the organ plays multiple octaves and keyboards at once, a sound that is difficult to recreate on piano, but he does is masterfully.
bro those octaves how
idk
Perfect bravo 🇬🇷
I first listened to Wilhelm Kempff and he ruined me for all the other pianists until I heard Cyprien Katsaris play all nine of Beethoven's symphonies as a piano solo! I have been an avid fan ever since. He plays with smile. Bach is favorite, tho, thnx
What a magician!
Thank you Maestro !!
Incredible performance the best in the world awesome 8"s. Congrats
I keep coming back to this transcription on the piano. As a young pianist, there are many things that I observe within this that simply drop my jaw. A breathtaking performance and experience from the Maestro! (As always)
Superb!
What a wonderful sounds❗️🍏Maestro Katsaris🍏, we admire ❤ your technique, we respect your efforts💕🎶🎵❗️ 💕
Thank you so much, now 🍀we are very happy,
super heavy metal ultra pianist !!!! amazing power BACH !!!!
Those octaves are super-human !!!
Superb
5:02 “shhhhhhh”
That dude is awesome
Busoni's idea is to turn an organ piece into piano work with strong musicality.
Katsaris's idea is to turn an organ "Toccata" into a piano "Toccata".
4:15 - 4:40 that has to be Liszt or Alkan reincarnated...
415-440
A Baroque et A Contemporain... Coïncidence ? Certainement pas !
You need to pop a couple 8 balls of cocaine to play that part right
I wish you would post your transcription on IMSLP or elsewhere. I would love to follow the score as you perform it.
WOW!
i didn't see this.. this is simply.. impossible.

Cyprien Katsaris, Grigory Sokolov, Marc Andre Hamelin - Virtuosity with Musicality
Sokolov couldn't possibly play this transcription. It's beyond his capabilities
Impossible.....wow god power........
He is god.....!!!!! Dadadadadadadada

The various angles of camera and the editing are seriousy annoying..... pity for this wonderful music!
Young, to make a name for himself and get that reputation of "virtuoso" Mr. Katsaris used to play transcriptions of Georgy Cziffra because Cziffra was a generous man and made them available to the public. Mr. Katsaris prefers to keep his transcriptions for himself, in case some young "virtuosos" would like to play his music too.
+Leo Ducon what are u talking about? He plays them publically.
+SpaghettiToaster Cziffra published sheet music for his transcriptions. I haven't personally seen Katsaris do the same, but I've seen him post sheet music of his performances on his personal youtube channel, so they're out there in some form as well.

Ναι.

alledgedly accomplicing in thirty years what took others three hundred for better or worse it's anyone's take
Gal Anonim has a point on musicality. Although Mr Berube is obviously talented, he is comparing mice with elephants.
I love Katsaris, but this was more for the groupies than the musicians. If Berube could even dream of executing Katsaris transcription at his recorded speed, +that* would be beautiful
3:36 eee
Paul Barton's interpretation is very good imo - I love Mr. Katsaris but I think the Toccata would have a better effect on the ears if he had played it a bit slower to let us fully enjoy the dramatic effect, especially in the beginning. Of course, Katsaris is technically amazing though :)
What?? It's impossible!
video seems spedup tiny bit. but. wow....He is god.,...4:18~
Even bach couldn't play like this i guess 😧
It's a fact
Bach in China, full steam ahead
Cziffra version is surely superior to this, It's just no more than circus
Only if somebody on this earth would ever transcribe Cziffras version :(:(
What a waste of meaningless octave passages.... colossal technique, so what?
You sound like a whinging jealous American.
The better the technical abilities of a pianist, the less restraint can be placed on the composer... One pianist does something difficult, others copy it, it becomes the norm... Composers can express their ideas without being too fearful of how "playable" something is as everyone is now a pyrotechnician on the keys... Pieces goes from "unnecessarily difficult" to "playable"... When Liszt was alive, not everyone could play his music, now it's mandatory... Same thing with Cziffra... Maybe soon Godowsky... And so on and so forth...
"What a waste of meaningless octave passages".
I have to agree. To my ears, the frenetic, thunderous, octave passages obliterated any clarity of the actual notes being played. I play this piece on the piano, often, in its original form, but I have no problem with a pianist arranging the piece differerently. In doing so, however, I believe the new arrangement should not stray too far from the original. In several sections of the above arrangement, the original composition is completely lost. The piece seemed to exist solely to show off Katsaris's virtuosity. The Gothic darkness and mystery was lost. Sometimes less is more. Furthermore, Bach's tempo, whilst not metronomic in all cases, is firmly rooted in the period in which he lived. Katsaris's version is all over the place. Bach would be turning in his grave. What next, Mozart's Requiem in the style of Hip Hop?
@@Jack-hy1zq "In doing so, however, I believe the new arrangement should not stray too far from the original"
I have to disagree, why should Katsaris restrain himself if he wants to apply new musical ideas and techniques to Bach's composition?
"Bach would be turning in his grave." Bach couldn't have dreamed of such music when he was alive because playing like this was physically impossible before the modern pianoforte. I think he would be smiling if he could hear this.
"What next, Mozart's Requiem in the style of Hip Hop?" The Confutatis and Lacrimosa were transcribed by Liszt in the Romantic way, I would love to hear a hip hop arrangement of it.
@@HL-xi7sz perfect. that is what i thought me too. you are expressing it perfectly
Bach si sta rivoltando nella tomba.Inascoltabile.🤮😱😡
