i dont know if it is just me but the irony of Atago dealing burn to enemies with her unique ability, she got burn easily too for some weird reason. I tried putting similar equipment on both Takao and Atago, but Atago seems to get burned easily. And i also would recommend Takao for her double torpedo skill when equipped with oxygen torps. Her pose design is frikkin cool too~
I love these kind of videos on honest and thorough thoughts on ships. With these two I have felt like both of them are relatively squishy when compared to some other ships and often times always have them dying earlier than other ships. Overall I feel like both Atago and Takao are decent and get the job done, but are not overall powerful like some other ships. They honestly just feel balanced, and that is kind of a good thing.

"I've never really seen fire damage over time being a big game changer" something you would regret in world 10 Also I don't get why people call them bad ships just by looking at their skills, I have used Atago since I started azur lane -I started during PoW and Atago's event- and She carried me from world 9 tho world 10 is a pain because of their low evasion getting hit by HE multiple times and getting burnt.
With Atago...most people only see her double torpedo skill as all she has (as a BB using HE ammo can cause fire dot to a target Atago set on fire. This also Trump's her skill as she loses her burn bonuses against it.) I think part of it is torp CA and rng based skills with meh proc rates. They aren't bad statwise at least

I love both of them and both are at Affinity 200. I'm biased for Atago more though. Hehe. Also, heavy cruisers gain much needed evasion past level 100 which makes them way more viable. p/s:- Fubuki is also a very underrated ship when it comes to torpedo strength and it makes Ayanami quite more impressive and survivable as well.
If Mogami kai didnt exist, I might have tolerated using any of these 2 on my fleet. The sad part is that they actually have really good Firepower but do not have MGM+1 to make full use of them. Hopefully, they get an awesome retrofit at some point in the future.

I think the luck is a historical reference.... in the battle of leyte gulf, atago got destroyed by USS darter (submarine) by multiple torpedoes. She sank at a rapid rate.
i tend to have CA more than CL ships and takao and atago can be crazy to the point i could use them together with the fox sister, amagi and aya to farm 11-4 on auto with choukai and nagato i think that atago and takao can wreak some serious hazards here and there
I have both, I got Takao in the very beginning and Atago just recently but.. I don't use them anymore. I find them to get outclassed massively but CAs like Minneapolis which I use as Mob Fleet clear for the current event on hard mode D2 and Mogami Kai which takes her place in the boss fleet. Also they get massively outclassed by Portland when it comes to the health pool because she's basically a wall so.. I'm gladly hearing other people opinions tho so go ahead and let's discuss a bit :)
I've never really used heavy cruisers a lot in battles but I just recently found out a perfect reason to use both Atago and Takao in my vanguard along with Jintsuu for one purpose (and either Nagato or Mutsu as flagship). That's right, they are perfect for farming 3m exp for Ibuki since you need to use Sakura Empire light or heavy cruisers. Overall I'd say they are stronger than I had expected because I was surprised when I noticed a fleet of those four ships are able to clear 8-4 (both mob fleets and the boss) all by themselves without Akashi or any other healers in the fleet on auto battle making it the perfect place for farming exp (especially since I don't have Maya yet). It's kinda hard to know when I really should be using heavy cruisers in higher chapters (chapters 10 & 11) because often destroyers are best with torpedoes, light cruisers like Jintsuu are usually better with fire power than most destroyers (Laffey and Z23 are a few of the exceptions) and heavy cruisers have overall slow attacks and movement and low evasion making them high health vanguard tanks. I'm not trying to imply they are bad but it's just hard to find good times to use them when there are often other, even better, ships to have in vanguard instead.
Update: the 12/22/20 patch lessened the shots all sisters need for their barrages (4 now) and the first firing of it gives a 10% evade RATE boost for the rest of the battle. "IJN DDs can torp better"- the sad truth of most Torp CAs, but same could be said of most Torp CLs not of the Sendai class. The Takao class tries to gun and torp, which is more than can be said of most HMS Torp CAs. Choukai will be needed (she buffs Cruiser FE/Torp ,not just FP like most) Takao's kit makes her a baseline of what a decent Torp CA is. Sadly Arsonist isn't that useful (CA burning isn't that notable and the damage boost isn't worth locking in on HE unlike Saint Louis), but it's also a very old skill which got buffed back in 2017. It's definitely in need of another buff (more damage boost, nix the burn meme), but even now, Atago's hard to top in sex appeal (though Takao's cuter IMO) CAs particularly IJN ones start gaining lots of eva as they get close to 120. This has basically caused a pushing out of many CLs at that point (though with the Lv125 patch, this might have started sooner)
As a fan of CA, i only use portland and suffolk on high map. Other CA kinda bit lacking. I do use lots of CA, but only low lvl, and lvl them up to just 75-85. But port and suffolk at lvl104 both now.
When Fallen wings rerun hits...get Minneapolis...she is amazing! I use Portland, Suffolk, Furutaka, Kako, and Minneapolis...looking up a lot more as well!

When their evasion stat increases at lv100+ and the hp/evade auxiliary that will release with the PR ships their bigger HP pool actually can play a role and they become useful tanking ships. Though, getting Roon would be the goal here since she is the EX Dangerous Vanguard to have besides Portland.
As i use WAY too many CA's in my fleets i have to say atago is a kind of a glass cannon for me, she is better if you have two DD's since speed of the vanguard goes up.
They are decent CA with respectable firepower, but their low evasion makes them suffer like most CA that aren't brick walls like Prinz or Portland. Also it doesn't help that retrofitted Mogami would out DPS Takao & Atago because the former has main gun +1. So the end story is okay mob fleet picks, but they are more oriented to the waifu side of the equation, given how incredibly popular they are among fanwork (and doujins).
I have prinz eugene, takao and leander as my vanguard with Saratoga, kongou and long island on the back cause they are my heavy hitters so far... Am I foing something wrong???

I like Atago Personally she is level 93 and max limit break and oathed. Her all out Assault really ruins enemy ships and I use her with Cygnet Retrofit and A second destroyer

@@ghendao So? I'm aware of the claim that she is weaker retrofitted, but I'm not that concerned. There are plenty of strong backline BBs...even then.. Yamashiro still puts in plenty of work for me in later stages.
Not a huge fan of HE burn damage on front lines since Most HE burn damage come from BBs. Burn damage don't stack and are just overwritten by stronger ones.

I would say they are both pretty good at mob clearing. I dont know but for some reason, the wall of skill they both can put out is frankly disgusting. And those mob fleets like to put in..i suppose a mini boss. Takao almost instantly clears it and reduces damage done to everyone in general, allowing me to abuse the fleet a bit more. Atago helps in lowering the health allowing takao to just put them down.
I know that Isuzu feel... took 5 days of grinding, 11,000 oil... goodluck with Houshou, Ikazuchi, Inazuma, Maya, Radford, Jenkins, Niizuki, Nicholas, Honolulu, Jinstuu, Agano, Sendai, Columbia, etc.

TBH. Both in my opinion is just chore to even pick or any heavy as that. Except tho have have 2 gun cause they can consistently assist with damage cause i`m someone that play usually play with fleet that have a lot of reload that can spam their gun. And because of how the game is play, it just better to just use Destroyer or Light kill thing and then end the game quickly. If you use them is best to use them as Tank more then something that can deal damage cause cause having 1 Gun and Torpedo is pretty much a chore even pick cause the burst is not worth it in my opinion. This line at 4:43 sum up my entire career with them.
Some heavies are decent for damage. I can understand the RoF advantage. The game does follow an inverse relation between fire power and RoF (like most games do). I mostly use heavy cruisers in mob fleets...as they generally can help out more there.

As i use WAY too many CA's in my fleets i have to say atago is a kind of a glass cannon for me, she is better if you have two DD's since speed of the vanguard goes up.
you could give her the beaver badge to help....not the most effective thing, but it could work.
The problem with atago is that fire does not stack, so every time it can be used, it’s probably burning from your battleships

They are decent CA with respectable firepower, but their low evasion makes them suffer like most CA that aren't brick walls like Prinz or Portland. Also it doesn't help that retrofitted Mogami would out DPS Takao & Atago because the former has main gun +1.
So the end story is okay mob fleet picks, but they are more oriented to the waifu side of the equation, given how incredibly popular they are among fanwork (and doujins).
Why choose one if you can choose both
I have prinz eugene, takao and leander as my vanguard with Saratoga, kongou and long island on the back cause they are my heavy hitters so far... Am I foing something wrong???

Actually Saratoga Kai allow flooding which is different. You can't stack fire but you can put both Flooding and fire.

I like Atago Personally she is level 93 and max limit break and oathed. Her all out Assault really ruins enemy ships and I use her with Cygnet Retrofit and A second destroyer

Not a huge fan of HE burn damage on front lines since Most HE burn damage come from BBs. Burn damage don't stack and are just overwritten by stronger ones.

I would say they are both pretty good at mob clearing. I dont know but for some reason, the wall of skill they both can put out is frankly disgusting. And those mob fleets like to put in..i suppose a mini boss. Takao almost instantly clears it and reduces damage done to everyone in general, allowing me to abuse the fleet a bit more. Atago helps in lowering the health allowing takao to just put them down.

I use both of them together in my main fleet
I know that Isuzu feel... took 5 days of grinding, 11,000 oil... goodluck with Houshou, Ikazuchi, Inazuma, Maya, Radford, Jenkins, Niizuki, Nicholas, Honolulu, Jinstuu, Agano, Sendai, Columbia, etc.
Ironically, I have Houshou, Ikazuchi, and Jenkins already (got them pretty quick)

TBH. Both in my opinion is just chore to even pick or any heavy as that.
Except tho have have 2 gun cause they can consistently assist with damage cause i`m someone that play usually play with fleet that have a lot of reload that can spam their gun.
And because of how the game is play, it just better to just use Destroyer or Light kill thing and then end the game quickly. If you use them is best to use them as Tank more then something that can deal damage cause cause having 1 Gun and Torpedo is pretty much a chore even pick cause the burst is not worth it in my opinion.
This line at 4:43 sum up my entire career with them.
Some heavies are decent for damage. I can understand the RoF advantage. The game does follow an inverse relation between fire power and RoF (like most games do).
I mostly use heavy cruisers in mob fleets...as they generally can help out more there.
