In this scenario you play as the Vikings and must cross the Sea of Worms to reach the New World and establish a colony there. Raiding the British and Greenland Vikings are the only ways of getting gold in this scenario, so conserve what resources you can!

Actually the Sea of Worms is not a 'literal dragon' but a snake: Jormundgandr, the mythical giant snake in Norse mythology. Supposedly Jormundgandr lives beneath the ocean and is so long it can encircle the entire world many times, and of course is responsible for the loss of the sailors who dare to seafare beyond known horizons. Jormundgandr is destined to kill none other than the god Thor in Rägnarok, the Norse end of the world.
RIP the deer that attacked your outpost.
This was such a wonderful historic mission - so beautifully recreated here in AOE 2.
I mean i really was compelled to read about The Vinland Sagas having now known anything about it. That is what AOE 2 campaigns are all about. Recreating and enacting scenes from history.
The sagas report that a considerable number of Vikings were in parties that visited Vinland - which is essentially northern Newfoundland - modern Canada.
Essentially in this scenario, you boom, visit England pillage them, visit Greenland - destroy them and then take your Viking explorers to the new world. You are in the new world five centuries before the voyages of Christopher Columbus and John Cabot! You encounter some locals who you kill and establish the first European colony in the Americas.
Some cool aspects of the scenario
- You can get a Penguin unit (yes! a frigging Penguin!) as an Easter egg by visiting the northeastern part of Greenland in the map behind a pile of rocks and a forest. This will unlock the achievement "Eternal Gratitude".
- Once Greenland is defeated, they would immediately ally with you, showing the "Sea of Worms" - a huge area of sea where ships that sailed in those waters did not return! How spooky! Test it out! Take some ships and see them instantly sink!
- At the southernmost point on the map just before the sea of worms, there is a Skraeling Woad Raider Unit named "Bert" after Forgotten Empires developer Bert Beeckman!
- Skraelings are now represented by a unique civilization of the same name.
Just amazing. This one.
Saint Brendan from Ireland may have reached North America as early as the sixth century. Although there is no archaeological evidence of it, it would have been possible with the leather clad ships of the time as demonstrated by historian Tim Severin.

Loved playing this mission as a kid. It felt comfy and safe, so whenever I would feel bad or sick Id just play this to feel better

The game says we are in Iceland at the start.... but it still looks a loooot like Norway to me xD
Oh yes, you can change the name of the civs now, for example in Attila the hun "The Catalaunian Fields", the teal enemy (Alans) are Huns but their civ name is changed to "Alans".
Yeah I was going to write it down also don't you if there some hidden triggers like in hd edition for example revetments - makes you built fortified palisade walls ???
My first time playing this I didn't knew anything about the scenario so Ornlu one shotted Eric and his men out of nowhere, didn't even know that the blacksmith triggered him. The second time I guess I forgot to make a blacksmith so I was able to complete it lol.

@@stefanandrejcik571 Yeah no crazy Deer anymore. It was indeed a bug. Why it happened I do not know, but *what* happens is that a deer would get caught in the area of effect trigger that buffs ornlu's attack when he is spawned in, and like ornlu gets tasked to your outpost. Why exactly it's glitches out like that... yeah no clue 11

Ah yes, Iceland that looks like Norway but it’s actually the Faroe Islands.
Why is there no extreme AI for the campaigns? Would've been a good challenge imo for veteran players like you.
This level kinda creeps me because of the killer sea.
Well, you can experience that irl if you go to the Bermuda triangle, coincidentally in the same area ish ^^
Here's a good tip for beginners :
1. Advance to Feudal Age
2. Attack the english, destroy one of their market, leave one market intact
3. Wreck the british after that but leave the one market intact
4. Build a nearby market (not too near and not too far) - make sure it is not within range of any greenland viking ships
5. Build trade carts and trade with the english for unlimited gold (wolololol)
6. With the huge gold, you would be able to conquer Greenland with Ease and unlock the Penguin achievement.
In the DE remake, its even easier as you have a bigger population cap.

Hi Ornlu! I’m a big fan and subscriber of yours! Could you please play the Lake Poyang Campaign? It’s an impressive historical battle where Zhu won an miraculous battle on the title lake while significantly outnumbered. Really looking forward to seeing the AOE representation of this!
With all due respect, you still don't start in Iceland here, but rather in the southwest of Norway. Scotland is just across the pond (well, not literally, just across the North Sea, but still you get the idea). Beste hilsener fra Romania!
Skraelings isn't a civilization, it's a word for the other in old norse, something a bit like the Greeks had barbarians for everyone outside Greece. In modern Danish the word has a meaning like skinnyarms or similar.
how do you build the market on this map? it doesnt let me
This is pretty easy campaign, you don't need conquer greenland, just destroy all south tower to built a dock in there then you can go with transport ship bring 1 villager and erik out of greenland. There you go, you arrived and go built some building there.

Yeah, in real life Greenland has only one forest in the south of it. ONE!!
climate was a little warmer back then. also, main occupation of greenlanders was whale hunting.

bruh i also did this on hard and greenland kept raiding me in less than 15 mins with siege and wayy more units than they did when raiding you

Not my historical area of expertise, but afaik it's just the name for the Inuit Native Americans encountered by Lief Erikson & friends during their trips to the new world. Idk what the literal translation means, seeing as I don't speak Old Norse, but I can't imagine it's a very kind name 11
@@OrnLu_AoE Well, the modern derivatives in Icelandic and Danish translate to barbarian and weakling, respectively. So there's that.
@@teddyhaines6613 Icelandic is basicly the same language as the viking/Ancient scandinavians spoke, so it's mostlikely weaklings as you already said ^^

That scenario had a specific date though, and it was somewhere around 900's, while Lake Poyang is based on 1363.
Did they just replace Langshan Jiang???
@@bogdkhan1669 I checked out Lake Poyang - it appears to be exactly Langshan Jiang, but with all the names switched around to fit the Red Turban Rebellion

@@stefanandrejcik571 I liked it too. But it was broken. Also in Inca campaign you play as Spanish Conquistadors... , so they decided to remake Inca campaign completly. But I'm sure you will like more Pachacuti campaign than El Dorado :)
