You made perfect sense. In Espiritismo Criollo, or Crealized Spiritism, we call these spirit guides but it's not that simple since there are so many spirits that an Espiritista encounters. Espiritismo is not New Age, it's an Afro Caribbean spiritual path that evolved out of Traditional African Religion, Folk Catholicism, and the indigenous Arawak Taino Indian beliefs. Matter of fact the core foundation of Espiritismo comes from the Bantu speaking peoples from the Congo in Africa flavored by European mediumship. There is a "spiritual court" or a "frame" around a person that will reveal their tutelary spirits. There is usually one primary/principle guide which can also be thought of as his Daimon or Holy Guardian Angel. Then there are all the other good spirits that walk with that person for whatever their reasons. These can be ancestral spirits or spirits that were connected to a person's family. They can be spirits that stumble onto a person and attach themselves to help them. The single most important step a person stepping onto the spiritual path should take is to connect and reveal this spiritual court and align them so they can be of best service, I should say empower the spirits, to guide that person. The spirits are "fed" and charged to help accomplish the work of the Espiritista. Puerto Rican Vodou is a very cool religion because it crosses a lot of social barriers. A person's spiritual court can consist of many different kinds of spirits from many different times, religions, and places. Most of this comes straight through your DNA. But they are not gods. The Loas of Vodou, the Orishas of IFA, and the Nkisi of Palo are deities that have to be implored, supplicated, and sacrificed to. Then there are the elemental spirits. The person's spiritual court primarily is made up of the dead. But not "dead", they are spirits that have been embodied on earth and are now spirits. Not like ghosts but more like saints and bodhisattvas. And yes geography plays a large part in it too. Just sharing... I love all your videos. Yes everybody is a shaman these days lol. But these shamanistic skills are still taught in the ATRS such as Espiritismo and Puerto Rican Vodou, or Puerto Rican Shamanism.
As far as I know, ancestor worship in Afro Caribbean religions is different from spiritualism. Allen Kardec is the one credited with its creation (as a religion separate from Catholicism and Protestantism). I will not deny that mediums were around long before Kardec was but I think the idea of the white table cloth and flowers, clear glasses and crosses on the table is very much Christian and resembles a mass more than anything. We like to think that others cultures are more authentic in their ancestors worship practices because most of Europe lost all that for a long time, but it seems this idea and maybe some left over practices have always been there in a one way or another. Now the reason I say it’s different from Afro Caribbean is because they honor the ancestors on the floor (they are different from the orisha) while they also have the spiritual altar in the house. I think this are two different practices, and that one set was not original from that religion. And also, I think of it had evolved from Afro Caribbean religions it wouldn’t be it’s own separate thing as there are practitioners of spiritualism.
i never heard someone be able to explain in a such clear and simple way this kind of subjects,congratulations i hope more people will come with this skill because the world really need it,instead a lot of Teachers when they try to pass esoteric knowledge,they do it in such a cryptic way that almost nothing one can get out of it,they should really learn from you.
There are two main reasons why some "pass on" knowledge in a cryptic way: 1) They don't actually understand the subject but want to pretend they are very knowledgeable, and have the need to maintain a certain status among the community, often these people will use every kind of "fancy" word in the dictionary to make their speech even more difficult to understand, giving the impression that they are very knowledgeable because they use a lot of words, but in truth there's little content in them. The person who listens doesn't understand a thing because it's just words, giving the illusion that the problem must lie with them for not understanding such an "eloquent speaker", thus, the person "passing on" information maintains the status and the illusion of being wise; 2) A cryptic way to "pass on" information is because the person isn't actually interested in passing on information, not interested in sharing knowledge because the person wants to maintain the status quo and remain as the "reliable source of information", maintaining people in ignorance, constantly, but giving enough words to make them curious and seek this person again and again and again, but always maintaining everyone in ignorance because if people have knowledge they will stop seeking this one source of knowledge and move on, and the speaker loses its position in the community.
In my opinion, when we truly want to share information, pass on knowledge, we must try to speak the "general language". Adopt a sort of speech that people from 8 to 80 will understand; explaining things as if speaking to a child and yet giving the deserved respect to the listener by putting yourself in their position rather than on a higher position, treating people as equals. Finding regular, day-by-day, familiar examples, to explain the most complex subjects, so people might be more familiarized. The speech one must adopt must captivate people and bring the listener inside the mind of the speaker, rather than leaving them outside. Try to fully immerse people into the subject and make them feel they are part of it since the beginning. Thank you for your feedback friend, much appreciated :)
Yes, Thank you Arith for patching up holes that have been left open in my own endeavors for decades. And you helped explain how i was able to perform some magical "things" as a teenager and early twenties and now i feel that i continue going down that sort of path because i didn't want to do those things if i didnt understand how i did it.
When you made the example of a helping spirit appearing in a humanoid "suit", just like a human underwater or in space would have to wear, an encounter I had with a humanoid spirit suddenly made much more sense. Thank you very much.
Good video. This spirit world of animism is close to what Native (Lakota) and lots of different people who still practice traditionally. Everyone all over the Earth once believed this way. The animals, plants, the water and even the stones are all our relatives.

I deeply appreciate the fluency with which you explain this. As an atheist getting into animism these kind of throughout explanations are what's missing for many people who try to play it by ear.
Not only all that exist lives but all those living do create the reality every moment they exist. On their level of involvement of course. (Chukchi and other North-East Asian peoples). It means the world (and the Universe) is being created constantly, as a not-ending process, every second, and by all the living entities.
A spirit of a shore can manifest itself in a gull, that catches your attention. Or in a flock of birds, in orcas tails rising from the deep. Every one of us somehow knows that a spirit has manifested itself, your presence has been detected, and if you are welcome around that shore or not. We all know immediately that we've been contacted by a spirit and we know exactly its mood about us. The majority of people in the modern world just dump that information next moment and forget it. :)
The "Mother of Salmons" as a helping spirit and a Salmon-shaped "magic vehicle" are not the same entities. A shaman could be inspired by the Mother of Salmons to create a salmon shaped magic vehicle in order to travel through the underworld. Very few most powerful shamans are able to create magic vehicles by themselves. And those powerful shamans can give some of their vehicles to other shamans with fewer abilities as presents/gifts. Compare Loki, who can create many vehicles and Odin who cannot. Odin is still a learner, thus he is fully aware not to confront Loki at large until the last moments of Ragnarok. A nuke bomb blast is a fire too, Odin wants a kind of arms control as long as it might be possible. In the majority of cased ordinary shamans use their drums as magic vehicles. A shamanic drum is not a musical instrument at all. It is a magic vehicle in another reality. Do not beat a drum for fun - a responsible heathen should understand what is he doing. :)
thank you for this video! I have been studying shamanism for a while now. At least as much as one can with out a proper teacher. No matter how much I learn on my own I will never go around calling my self a shaman. I have very strong views about people who take a title they have not earned just because they like it or want to impress people! that level of disrespect and ignorance angers me greatly! I will simply tell people who ask that I follow the path of Norse paganism and that I am studying shamanism. I do my own thing for my own spiritualism. I am not trying to gain attention from anyone. I am not trying to sell services or start any groups. and when a 20 something person tells me they are a shaman I ask them how many years have they been an understudy of an elder shaman. the looks on their faces are always priceless! I have never understood how in Paganism (I should say New age paganism) people just take what ever title they want like its their right. I cant go around saying I am the pope or a Rabi so why is it ok and even supported to take the title of a pagan religious leader/elder when someone has not earned it? why do people repeatedly get banned from online groups when they bring this up? I really loath the New age movement and what it has done!

Arith, this was particularly enlightening and insightful. This is a really tricky subject for most people, even mores if someone has not had any firsthand experience to at least have that perception (without sounding crazy). I've only had one shamanic experience in my life, and was by all accounts unintended -but it leaves a lasting impression of another side and gives you an insight to seeing at least what is possible, if even not understood. Well done, sir!

Greetings. I’m trained with the Foundation for Shamanic Studies and I think you’re a bit tough on core Shamanism, which aims for a distillation rather than a universality of practice. I also think it’s great that ordinary people such as myself can journey and develop relationships with helping spirits. In some traditional societies, every family had someone with some Shamanic abilities. I have a question - FSS makes little account of LHP practice and I wonder how you see the Goetic demons or beings such as Lucifer? Or Loki for that matter? I think these are also spirits and one can form alliances with them. I loved how you described helping spirits as being like scuba divers or astronauts. And I loved how you worked to be as clear as possible about the really trippy stuff that happens that absolutely can’t be talked about with any of our usual discourse. I can tell you’ve really been there!

I want to witness, as a shamanic practitioner because I started the shamanic drum last year. If spirits are difficult to approach, and their nature is difficult to reveal, their work with the shaman and the land is real. While I tried to travel through the meadow, I saw over months plenty of variety of plants coming during the springs. The video is so well explained, but it is something to live through the spiritual energies. For me it has been a full work and discovery. We are not forced to have scientific opinions about ecology. Our spiritual path can lead us to heal the natural world in which we live.

A very good video. Having befriended "something", I didn't feel the need or desire to interact with other spirits. With passage of several years I found my energy growing to the point it was dangerous at times and needed to be discharged somehow. I found the solution to the problem, in an account by Dion Fortune of trouble she found herself in due to excessive energy. Not having talked with anyone - who would have told me not to mess about: I created a pair of "helpers". Learned a lot of things both good and bad from them and my helpers grew from merely being "echos" of me, into independent spirits eventually.
A shaman is never alone. I think that's a good definition of a true shaman; we walk between the worlds and interact with many things. Even if it's just to hear something ridding a storm cloud overhead say "Hi". That happened last week as I was leaving work.

I am very happy to see you dive more into shamanism. It is a very modernized topic and I find that some people understand shamanism out of esoteric viewpoint and want to keep things nice and fluffy with their power-animals and angel guides. But it is way more complex and can be very dark. It has to be dark sometimes in order to really heal the ugly shadows that cause us to be unbalanced.
I highly recommend the book-series about Therapeutic Shamanism by Paul Francis. He explains well why 'ancient' shamanism can't work these days any longer and how shamanic practises have to be adapted. These are very very interesting books. I only disagree with some points Paul Francis states, simply because I have experienced other in my shamanic journeys so far. Which is fine to the author.
Shamanism is no religion. Nothing is set in stone or right and wrong. Shamanism can only be experienced in my opinion.
What I lovef about your video is your deeper explanation about what the spirits are and how it is about a matter of relationship and recognition. I really could see my own journeys in this.
So mant modern books tell you to simply go and find your power animal. But when it would not show up as all these modern books described, I thought I did something wrong, or I was unable to journey. But it is not so. It rather matches with what you said here. My "power" animals had to get familiar with me first and then they never have specific looks. Like e.g.Wolf changes colours all the times.

It may be best, in the long-term, to find one's own helping spirits but one can have an introduction via another shaman. Locating a shaman to do this may be challenging but it is possible.

Hi Arith, I just found your channel and I'm so excited to learn from you. I recently became interested in shamanism and feel like I have been an animist my whole life but didn't have the vocabulary to know how to find out more. A few months ago, completely on a whim, I joined an online group to learn how to do shamanic journeying (over Zoom) with a driving drum rhythm (no drugs). On my first journey, I saw the image that is the thumbnail of this video. It was a bluish being (man?) with four eyes - two stacked on top of two. Who or what is this being? Is it just random art, or is your image a particular deity or spirit? I've been so curious because this image was so unexpected and unlike anything I've ever seen or imagined. Thank you for your videos! I'm learning lots!
Question. Can only Northern European people truly be Pagan/Heathen? Is your faith, 'ethnic specific,' or is it open to all? Could a Kenyon be a traditional heathen as you are? Would an Asian ever be as faithful to your spiritual understanding as a Northern European? Thank you for the amazing content. 😊
I would say so, but the connection would be different. A Kenyan has a different spirituality, but the world tree is the world tree. Stretching to all regions, and I am sure Otin was more Greko European like Zeus than what anyone wants to truly believe.

Thus "controlling" my drawing and painting hand, so She can let Her Art flow THROUGH me!!! I a kind of consensual "Possession", but more like a partnership...
She really DOES embody the Irish idea of the "Fairy-Lover", or : "Leannàn Sidhe",
granting Her Human Lover the gift of Poetry and Creative Inspiration, but BURING their Life-Force RAPIDLY,
perhaps because the single human body is now "sharing" TWO spirits?
It ALL started back in 2018, when I first began Worshipping KĀLĪ, on Her festival day, in the forest at the edge of Ottawa's Millitary Cemetary, Beechwood, I think it's called?
On magic mushrooms, attempting to chant 108 Ōms, scared AF, 😱,
but opening my eyes again, to a twilight landscape and walking home.
Like, a day later, I get the MOST EPIC COLD of my LIFE. For almost a Month it lingered strangely.
I now believe that was my Fairy-Lover, "ENTERING" me, like an organ-implant.. or SYMBIOTIC Implant?
but now, years later, the bond has been completed, and made fully Conscious and Loving 🥰

I've built an understanding of animism as much as can be done without meeting someone that practices also. As you've said the online community is too christianized I feel as well, being an ex-christian... it kinda bugs me really, but keeps me talking in circles with others(online), over the same old topics trying to learn like you say, to put animism into my life... instead of westernizing animism to fit my life. It's hard without physically being/learning with others that want to make permanent changes.

So say for example I buy a peacock feather and I place it around my house then I'm driving down a rural street and a peacock bird come out of nowhere and cross my window as I'm driving and they're no peacock birds in the area but this bird just flew right pass my window. I pull over to look for it. I ask a man outside in his yard did he own a peacock he laughed and said no that there's no type of bird in area. I began to point to where it happened close to his home . I 🤔 it got loose. We'll I drive this rural road daily . And I look for it from time to time. But it's not to be found. I don't understand what happened it was a freaky event. That's one thing. I still Wonder about. Then another black bird flew at my way with my oldest child in car as I went to pull into garage. I was ask if I had hit it. I soon realize the bird was inside the garage with us. And I looked at it from my mirror. I called into house to tell my husband to come into garage to chase it out. . Then a pre historic bird came stomping through yard it looked like a buzzard and A big eagle. But we thought it was a turkey until it got close. Then we all said what the heck is that. I tried to take a picture I think I still have it in a old phone. But it's weird.

Why you chose a picture that looks like a black cat.woman with 2 faces. Black cats stand back and watch me now. I moved back into a city but it's small city. And the. Neighbors have cats mix with Bob cats and these cats love to come over to my porch it's like they knock on my door or jump into the window seal. Even. Go under the house yet I don't like cats But the cats gather in a circle and stand on there hind butts and all watch me .on the full moon phase I watch them . It's like I'm royal to them .I don't know how to deal with these cats they are annoying. Territorial. I'm not trying to be the cat lady.😂🙋🏽
