  • A lot of my students have a hard time really "owning" and memorizing licks because they try to memorize too many things...
Most "licks" come from a series of "moves," and those moves tend to get used in many different licks, no matter where they come from.
I think of it like speaking or typing, you don't think about how to type "t - h - e", you just type "the" when you think of it.
So think of moves as the articles of blues soloing ;)

This lesson changed my mind. I am one of those guys who cannot own and memorize licks. Griff, you should be proud: all this years teaching stuffs and still being relevant. This is not for any one. Thank you very much.

I love all these short lessons as you’ve made me realise how easy it is to play authentic sounding blues- just as long as you know what to do. This is where you come in; making learning simple and accessible Thank you!😊

I never thought of it that way, so this is really helpful.

Thanks for these lessons. Really helpful, especially the counting. I appreciate the details and scale degrees being mentioned and the onscreen tabs and notation.

Thanks Griff! I like the idea of these licks as connectors.

Aside from the counting (which ive never gotten the feel for lol) these are some of the “ moves” /licks my in person teacher would teach me way back when i thought i could actually learn to play … i still noodle and put in attempts to learn now and then , but i could never figure out how to use the licks when just playing ..or how to really put em together unless they were connected basically as what i call an extended pentatonic run (moving/sliding /pulling off etc through octaves ) ….even then if i tried to play to a track it was shit (probably because i cant count lol)

I would just about guarantee it's the lack of counting. A small percentage of people have natural time and feel, some learn it through school band or instruments as a child, but a large percentage of people have no experience having to keep time, and for some reason it's often neglected in guitar education. It's a HUGE deal, and I'm certain that if you take the time to be able to count out these ideas and get them memorized, that you'll start being able to play them over tracks. It'll take some time, but it *can* happen.
