  • First real test flight after an initial hover test, filmed August 2021.
Not my machine - I was approached by a good friend to build it for them. The catch? I'd never built a kit helicopter before!
I'm nervous as all hell throughout this flight, I'm still a relatively new pilot. I'd probably have had to file for bankruptcy if I'd crashed..!
Telemetry was partially setup for this flight - the TX kept reporting low ESC voltage when flying in idle-up 2. The lipos were second hand and only fit for the bin we discovered. At one point it reported as low as 40V - on a 14S system that's ~ 2.85v per cell(!). We couldn't find any new stock of 7S lipos anywhere at the time, so we just used these for testing and haven't flown with them since.
    Spec:
    Scorpion 4535-380kV motor
Really shitty used and abused 7S Optipower lipos - two for 14S
    Hobbywing 200A V4.1 ESC
    Brain2 HD BT flybarless
    Align DS820/825 servos
    RT 810mm main blades
    RT 116mm tail blades
    Spektrum 4651T receiver
    2 x Spektrum 9745 satellites
    1st RC 50F capacitor bank
    Flown with Spektrum iX20

Yeah they're something special. Big shame this one isn't mine, but a privilege to build, setup and fly it for the owner!

I run mine on 12s but think I need 14s like yours , a great heli and pretty rare here in the U.K. !

Hi, friend. Tell me, does the tail not wag a little when hovering in place? What tail servo are you using?

hi, is it possible to install 150mm tail blades?

Nicely done. The first kit I built was the Goblin 380 Buddy. A bit difference in scale. ;)

Thanks! I did a lot of research and had been flying CP for about a year with lots of practice before this flight..
I've managed to fly and work on quite a few different machines now and I'm of the opinion that the bigger they are, the easier to fly and maintain.
Not had chance to get my hands on a SAB yet sadly!

@@mikesmiscellanea Yeah, bigger flies better. But bigger is also much scarier.
The first time I saw a Logo 800 start turning those big blades, I backed up at least 5 meters.
That thing scared the crap outta me. The biggest heli I had seen at the time was my own Blade 360CFX 3S. Lol

@@Scenium for sure! Though weirdly I found the 800 less intimidating than 550s and 700s. It's so stable and flies so we'll at low RPM I though it was relaxing. Or would have been if it wasn't someone else's heli!!

What headapeed and pinion was that running.

    • @mikesmiscellanea
      @mikesmiscellanea  2 роки тому +1

      Head speeds were about 1050 / 1250 / 1400
      Pinion is the larger 14T.

The nice thing about the Brain FBL, with the PC config it is really hard to screw up so that it is not flyable. (BeastX, not so much... ask me how I know)
"Gentle Giant" is how I think of my TREX-800 that I'm getting used to.
Mikado makes some sweet looking birds. I'd like to get one someday.

    • @mikesmiscellanea

Absolutely, while a lot of people are fond of the BeastX, I find it a bit old hat now. Brain/Ikon and Spirit are much better units IMHO. I've just switched my own Trex 550X to a Spirit GT and it flies so much better!
I don't think I'd ever buy a Mikado myself. Although the 800 flies beautifully, the kit quality wasn't great (one or two screws missing, one end of the boom was crushed/out of round and the manual isn't the most detailed)
BUT! You can tell that there was no design consideration for cl an wiring or maintenance. I've heard they don't crash too well either.

@@mikesmiscellanea A lot of people are fond of "cheap."
I am now flying the Futaba 760R. They feel amazing.
However, I still strongly prefer the PC based configuration of Brain/Ikon. Also, they can report HobbyWing telemetry with nothing more than a wire.
As to kit quality, my TREX 800 kit had some issues. Threads weren't rolled out to the tips of the linkage rods between swash and rotor head. They could not be threaded into the ball links, no way. Also, the build went better when I quit looking at the book. The directions were sooo bad.
      1) It references parts that are not included and should not be. (this caused the biggest confusion and slow downs)
      2) The entire tail boom mount and gear set is entirely different than pictured
      3) The tail servo mounting directions are entirely wrong. Shows mounting direct to carbon, but there is really an aluminum bracket.
      4) Screw diagrams don't match what is used in step
      5) Bag labels? LOL
      6) Measurement diagrams not pointing to correct measure points on parts.
      7) Probably more, but I quit looking at it...
The new 2021 model is back to conventional head (no longer DFC). The boxes still show DFC. And canopy is a vintage Trekker unit (and paper thin). LOL

@@yzScott how do you like your Trex? Thinking about getting into a 700. Want to cry once.

    • @yzScott
      @yzScott 2 роки тому

@@Gsxrtrix Pros: The value of the combo with servos, motor, and ESC. Cons: Minor QC issues in kit and the manual was a joke.
It's a "Chevy" as far 3D helis go. Parts are widely available and decent cost. If you compare the cost of other brand kits plus the electronics that come in the Align combos, it is essentially impossible to come close without use garbage parts.
My previously largest heli was the 550X. I asked Alan Szabo, if he as was going to have just one of the big ones, which would it be? He said the 800, so that is what I bought.
But, I'm sure I would love the 700 or even the 650 too. They are plenty big to have a log of presence in the air. But they are more powered up. I think the 700 and 800 share exactly same motor, but the 800 is a good bit heavier. The 800 still has plenty of power, the 700 would be a monster.

@@yzScott Sweet! Thanks for the response. I’ve looked at the SAB’s. QC scares me if I end up with something off. I’m not a builder so if QC gets off I’ll get stuck. Those trex kits are truly nice but Im unable to make up my mind. It might be I just dive in and figure it out. Worst case I know what I need next lol
