  • Today, we'll take a look inside the Tactile Knife Co Thumbstud Rockwall Pocketknife, and find that the bearings are no longer loose, and the blade and detent hole are done very uniquely.

These disassembly videos are really helpful and even relaxing too. Thank you for what you do. I’m a little obsessed with certain tools and your videos are a calming touchstone.

Yours was so much easier to take apart than mine. My stop pin is basically press fit on both scales and some monster torqued down the body screws to the point that it felt like they were about to strip when I was loosening them.

I just got mine and it’s the exact same. I had to pry the scales apart

It is interesting to hear comments about gritty actions and shavings and no threadlock. I think it is very cool this is made in USA, but for $300 it should be perfect out of the box.

Thanks for the video. I was about to take my thumb stud Rockwell apart to clean. That would have been a mistake. I would be sending the knife back to Tactile for replacement ball bearings.

Thank you for this very helpful video. I just received my new Rockwall thumb stud two days ago and my excitement was tempered with some disappointment with the action being gritty and dry feeling. Upon watching your video and with thoughts of finding metal bits, I disassembled mine to find indentations from the pivot balls into the titanium collars on both sides. At least no unnecessary metal but was also absent lubrication which I added for little to no effect. I assume that it was overtightened on the original assembly. I will be contacting Tactile Turn to see if they have a pleasant resolution..

I posted a break down video of this knife recently as well. I was VERY pleasantly surprised to find the caged bearings vs the loose ones.

Since you disassemble so many knives you could measure the bearing size for Skiff or the community.

Anyone else find a ridiculous amount of metal shavings after taking it apart? I had a ton of shavings gunked in the liner and that detent groove. After cleaning and reassembling, it’s 100% my favorite knife though. Just disappointed on the QA as this is my second issue from tactile knife co.

I agree disassembling, cleaning, lubricating, and reassembling is very therapeutic. One question. You mention the 242 thread lock. Do you mean the 248 medium?

Mine has a blunt tip, bit of a dull blade and grindy action. Because of the blunt tip I will not keep it or adjust anything. I love the look and feel and the snappyness but I will replace or return it, whatever my dealer prefers. Bummer.

Every time I see something like that mess of threadlocker I always wonder what percentage of these higher end knives ever get disassembled after leaving the factory. I bet no more than 30%.
I bet around 60% just get thrown in a pelican case and rarely handled. Completely fine for knives like this, infuriating for knives that only a few dozen of exist and you're trying to find one (to put in your own pelican case and rarely handle, ofc)
