- Despite keeping the squad as it was, Liverpool would start the 1965/66 season much better than they had the previous one. By the time they went away to Stamford Bridge in December, they were already top of the league, on a six-game unbeaten run.
Their opponents Chelsea had been title challengers and League Cup winners under Bill Shankly's friend Tommy Docherty the previous season, however an incident after losing to Liverpool at Anfield saw a scandal erupt, and things wouldn't be quite the same for the Blues.
