Lyrics:
Willie’s fair and Willie’s rare
And Willie’s wondrous bonny
And he’s promised to take my hand if ever he takes any
Sister dear, I’ve dreamed a dream
I’m afraid it is of sorrow
I dreamed I saw the heather green in the dowie dens of Yarrow
Sister dear, I’ll read your dream
Read in it grief and sorrow
The green it brings misfortune, here
And your love is drowned in Yarrow
She sought him up
She sought him down
Ran with the speed and sorrow
She found him ‘neath a bush of broom
In the dowie dens of Yarrow
Her hair it was five quarters long
The colour, it was yellow
And she tied it to his middle small
And pull him out of Yarrow
My bed it was wide yesterday
Today it shall be narrow
And there’s ne’er a man lie by my side
Since Willie’s drowned in Yarrow
Wow .. thnx. For a not native English speaker this is gold.
Willie's feared and Willie's weird .....?
Dowie =dawy ?
(Not 1 translation found on "dowie".)
NB. "fair" and "rare" is a correct spotify recorded version.
amazing..
superbly done
Amazing, transcendent.
Beyond delicious. Red Tail Ring, what's your source?
awesome song, just curious why it looks the like guitarist has wound strings were the B and high E should be.
needless to say, very very out of this world.
Sounds great. Playing the Bay Area anytime?
Anyone know the banjo tuning to this beautiful song
g - Eb - Bb - eb - f
(Double C, 3th fret.)
Beautifully different from Kate Rusby's version. I used to think Kate's was the best - now I'm not so sure...
Thnx for naming Kate Rushby. I did not know she also sung this song...
Anyone have any idea what she's doing there? At first I figured she was playing in sawmill, but now I look at it again, it seems more complex.
Oh. Yeah, it's the name of a banjo tuning.
Samuel Hughes it sounds like a modal tuning to me as well. my first thought was sawmill. I have no idea why that would be such a shocking statement...
any suggestions of the tuning?
I think it’s standard G tuning with a capo at the 3rd fret so it becomes Bb (gFBbDF) and then she’s playing in C minor/Eb major. Think open G tuning but playing in A minor modulating to C major. I tried to imitate her playing this way and it seemed to match (the general idea but of course not the style).
She’s not doing bum didee on the banjo, classic claw hammer is she? I’m been playing banjo for a year so new to it.
