Hell we have Frontier deploying fiber right now into my rural subdivision. For what I'm paying right now for 400Mb (they just bumped it to 500Mb a week ago) on Spectrum (was Time Warner), I can get 2g in rural Texas. As it is now I can't fully use a 2g connection so I will be going 1g for less than half the price I'm paying now. But I am looking to rebuild my home network to 10g as the cost has drop a bit so I don't mind spending money knowing I don't have to do it again in 4 to 5 years times.

Before I retired I was the technical program manager for Intel's network products division and managed the development programs for Intel stand-alone 1G Ethernet devices (such as the I350, I210, 82576, and others). I was advocating for single, dual, and quad port 2.5G silicon about 5 years ago but there was a huge imperative to build 10GBaseT, 40G, and 100G parts and we just didn't have enough engineering staff to do it all. I think the same is likely for many of the leading developers. We liked the idea, but we couldn't make it happen unless the switch silicon guys would support the idea too. Alas, they were concentrating resources on the great Ethernet speed race and were not able to commit resources either.

I see a small flaw in your plan: whilst most 10Gb adapters cost twice as much as that 2.5Gb card, they are still four times as fast. I can understand users with 10+ PCs on their network would be expensive - that said, if they just had 3-4 PCs, a 10Gb card for each would likely be a better investment (less if the motherboards in some probably already have them).

@@wisico640 I've got SSDs in my computers as well. And my laptop can reach up to 2000 Mb/s in reads and writes, but 500Gb isn't that much, especially for modern games. I've got a NAS with 10Tb storage. Gigabit network is limiting read/write to 125 Mb/s, so having SSDs in NAS is pointless, because the HDDs in RAID can do up to 300 Mb/s. Other than waiting a few extra minutes (sometimes even seconds) on splash and loading screens I don't see any performance issues playing from a network drive. The choice is obvious for me :)
Down the road, I would love to upgrade at least to 2.5G, which won't limit my NAS HDDs, but my router, NAS and switch has only 1G ports - the upgrade just for NAS itself will cost around 1200 USD (I like Synology and that's what cost the model with pcie slot in my country). Or I can use link aggregation with NAS and get 2G, but I am not sure how to set it up, and how much it will cost for a new router and switch. So I will just stick to gigabit for now, because it just works, could have been worse if I had only 100 Mbps 😂

I have Bahnhof here in Sweden, but only 1000/1000 Mbps (live on the country side with FTTH IP-Onlys network) at around 60 USD/month. The 10 000 Mpbs speed is only offered by Bahnhof in their own network and one other network, Skanova (part state-company), in some areas. Bahnhof is really awesome, they offer good speeds at reasonable prices plus they are fighting the big fight for privacy on the net. Now a huge part of Sweden, both cities and on the country side has access to fiber up to 1000 Mpbs due to the state and EU putting alot of grants into building of fiber networks on the country side. In our area we have our own economic Association
where we own the fiber network between all members and let IP-Only handle the network with an open platform with lots of ISPs to choose from. Really cheaply... :) Next step in Sweden is to upgrade networks to 10 000 Mbps but I think it will take some time to upgrade all networks due to the costs of the 10 000 Mbps-fiber optical network switches and 10 000 Mpbs fiber converters for the homes.

Yeah, but even then you have to have a switch capable of doing aggregation on the other end. Unmanaged switches won't do that.

Intel X520 on Ebay is also about $25. You can get a Qnap switch with 3xSFP+ ports for something like $160 (though I got a Mikrotik with 4 SFP+ for like $200). A SFP+ module can be found for many switches for $5-15 on Ebay.
Teaming 1Gbps connections isn't as cost-effective/good as it used to be when compared to newer solutions. (Though it's still often "fine")

The NAS can be connected to the 10Gbase-t ports, while the workstations and access points can use the 5/2.5gbase-t ports. The remainder of the ports can be used for consoles, printers, IP phones, cameras and other devices that can only use 1gbase-t ethernet.

I ended up buying two of those qnap switches and diving into this, the one MAJOR f me in terms of cost, was getting an rj45 compatible nic that was also compatible with freebsd, and that had to be (at least in my searching) a £300 starlink one (although I got it for 50 off) with an intel x550, that's actually a 10 gig card, but backwards compatible with 2.5, that leaves me ready to go to 10 gig in the future whilst staying functional with pretty much any nas os I throw at it. So yeah, if you are doing this with home built network storage, that's one to look out for, otherwise if all you need is to connect up a few normal computers 2.5 is a steal.

The issue isn't the speed it gives you but it's the support. A lot of NAS solutions etc either have 1GBps or 10Gbps, not 2.5. You could get a multi gigabit switch and connect that with a short patch cable and utilize 2.5 GBps in your PC's so you can use existing CAT 5E cabling in the walls. That's the only reason to use it, if you already have CAT6 in your home you might as well go with 10Gbit.
Also, for many people it requires the purchase of a switch, most home users simply use the ethernet ports in their ISP suppied router for a few devices and use wifi for the rest.

While you'll likely never saturate a consumer ISP or even NAS with 2.5Gbps connection in most circumstances, it does absolutely help in increasing your maximum total throughput. For example, before I upgraded my home ISP from 1G to 2G, my work-related VPN capped out at around 700Mbps with a simultaneous upload to my NAS running around 700 Mbps (Toshiba Ent drives on ZFS with RAM cache), after the upgrade (2G ISP with 2.5G NICs/switch), I was able to almost saturate my NAS and work-related VPN simultaneously at close to 950Mbps for the VPN and 900Mbps for the NAS. And since a lot of DC around Tokyo actually run 10G fiber backbone almost all the way to my apartment complex, I'm actually able to download a lot of things way faster with a 2G ISP / 2.5G NIC when compared to my old 1G ISP / 1G NIC. So, like everything with networking, it REALLY depends on your location, environment, workflow, use-case, etc, etc, etc.

So yeah till cost comes down in 5 or 6 years it's a kind of look at what I have feature in my opinion.
