Every mode of mass transit that rolls through the city should be on the OMNY system. London did it with the Oyster card, so that the Tube, the Overground, the DLR, National Rail, and all the bus companies are available to the user through the Oyster card.

This should be technically possible since both Oyster and OMNY were both created by the same company called Cubic Corporation. It's really just interagency/interstate rivalry between NJ, NY, and the Port Authority over revenue sharing that prevents this from happening.

I was recently in Munich and was really impressed by the S Bahn and U Bahn and how they integrated with the buses and trams under a single ticket. Further, the all S Bahns run in a single line of stations under Munich from Ostbahnhof to Hauptbahnhof, with 4 stations in between, in the center of the city. As you suggest, NYC could do the same by extending the Eastside Access south, down the east side of Manhattan to Atlantic terminal. This would allow through running, reducing the number of parking tracks needed at the city terminals, and allow the frequency on all LIRR lines to increase dramatically.

They need to work on fair control. Ticketing is awkward and conductors are not the answer. it needs to work seamlessly with the OMNY system and not require manual paper ticketing.
The second avenue line needs to go over 125th. We don;t need another downtown line, and the existing lines + some commuter extensions can do a better job than the arbitrarily placed second ave line.

@@MysticTransit Actually I think a lot of the problems we have with long-term financing and maintenance is the flat fare rather than distance based faring like most places use. Especially with OMNY coming in, tapin-tapout would be handy and would allow for some limited zoning. I realize this is an unpopular opinion, but the maintenance costs to cover people riding the entire length of the A is much higher than someone going 3 stops on the E. Not to the level of things like Tokyo where every trip is a different price, but something more intelligible, adaptive and integrated than the awkwardness they have done for things like express buses almost acting separate from the rest of the system in an effort to cover the added costs.
Not to mention without tapin-tapout, the MATA doesn't even have really comprehensive ridership data beyond shear numbers since they can't tell where people exiting came from, if they transferred, etc., and this makes resource allocation and determinations about which lines need more/different service or what areas are over and under served difficult to begin with. The buses likewise lack data for the same reason (though at least we don't do odd faring like Pittsburgh where if you pay when boarding or leaving depends upon time of day and boarding location), which is an even bigger problem for the buses since they can actively adjust routing if they have more data to provide better service, rather than just frequency. I think this is part of the seeming arbitrariness of the Second Ave line; without data it becomes more of a "fill the missing grid line" operation than picking the areas most in need of service since you don't know beyond "Lex line has lots of people".

    • @MysticTransit
      @MysticTransit  2 роки тому +15

I'm Semi-Against Zone-based fares. I think it would work nicely for a City/Out of City Fare for the Commuter Rail, however, for the Subway, I think it would just make it more complicated. I do like the idea of Tap-In/Tap-Out for more accurate Ridership data though.
If Zone-Based Fares are brought to the subway system, it needs to come in a way that isn't too disruptive, confusing, and pricey.

I was always hoping there would be a commuter rail line installed on the new Tappan Zee Bridge, but the NIMBY's stopped that. Such a line would provide a partial circumference line around the north side of NYC, tying a few lines together.
On the west side, it could follow I-287 (as an elevated structure in the median?), tie into NJ Transit Pascak Vly line at Spring Vly, then to the Bergen Co/Port Jervis line at Suffern. On the east side, it could again follow 287 (elevated structure in the median?), tie into the Hudson line at Tarrytown, the Harlem line at N White Plains, & then to the New Haven Line at Rye. This would allow cross county service from NJ all the way to the new stations on the Hell Gate Line in the Bronx & on to Penn Sta. The Hudson Line / Tarrytown connection would be difficult due to difference in grade & limited space. Possibly a physical passenger x-fer station only, similar to Secaucus Jct.
In conjunction with Hell Gate service, convert the 1 track freight line that splits off to the east/north on the Brooklyn side of the Hell Gate Br into a 2 track commuter rail line, tie it into the main LIRR line into Jamaica station (would require some sort of flyover, probably property takes). This would allow direct service between Long Island & the mainland north of NYC, in conjunction with the Tappan Zee line, all the way to NJ.
Most of these proposals require multi mode trains, similar to the M8's, which can run on all the different electrical systems. Also the lines on the west side of the Hudson are non electrified.

We can create a low speed maglev for the crosstown line over the I-278 corridor. In the meantime they can upgrade beeline W13 to every 10 minutes and create a new separate line that runs to NJ via the I-278 corridor to parsippany from spring valley as the current Hudson link already perfected Rockland to westchester bus service it’s a massive improvement over the old TZX it replaces as it has superior speed and superior frequency making travel easy

I think that NYC metro should be thought more like a inter connected region. Currently we think of Long Island as one place, NYC as one, North Jersey as one and suburbs up north as one. I think it would be really beneficial if we think about it like Ruhr-Rhine region in Germany. Because a decision in one place will severally impact another place. So things like transit planning should have a more broader thought behind it.

I think that through running existing train/rail service would be ideal in creating an regional rail/S-Bahn network for NYC metro. Due to problems with revenue sharing between NY, NJ, and CT, such a network would be have to be contracted out to a 3rd party. The CT DOT, the MTA, and NJT will own the tracks themselves, and maintain them. The train equipment can possibly be leased out by the agencies and staffing will be done by the operator. Do you think that this is an interesting idea?

You can do through running of trains onto crosstown lines like triboro RX or express line 2nd ave and have new NJT services lines instead of slamming into Hoboken or Penn to through Staten Island and inter borough express. 125 can be a regional rail crosstown through service to new lines in NJ with trains no longer ending at Penn station from either LIRR or NJT giving more space to Amtrak for intercity services.

You'd have to make sure that the two state governments are of one mind on this, which means that both state governments would have to be run by progressive governors; that has to happen completely and utterly *_first_* before any project or agreement on unifiying transit systems.
Personally, as long as the various transit agencies have a fare payment system that allows one to use a credit card or ATM card containing a kernel of VISA in it (most/all debit cards belonging to most banks), I don't see any problem with each of the seperate agencies in New York, New Jersey and Conneticut being the way they are.

I think the mta should work on frequency before expanding the system. The issue with the lirrr and metronorth is that they both cater specifically to commuters and workers, limiting access to those who would want to take the train for leisure activities or during off peak hours. I think ridership would increase if they implemented a service pattern where customers can take the train whenever they please (for the most part) instead of having to worry so much about missing the next train and planning ahead to take the train

Yes, this is perplexing to me. I lived in New York many years ago, I now live in my home city of Stockholm. This has always been something of a pet peeve of mine regarding the New York commuter rail system. I lived there many years ago and I saw the commuter rail system and always though it was strange that nothing more was done with it.
For instance, by through-running trains in Penn Station, you could not only increase connectivity throughout the region, you could also probably increase frequencies because a large bottle neck for sack-station-like operation is turning the trains around in a high frequency location, both because you're occupying valuable platform space for a long time and because turning the train means blocking trains going in the opposite direction. If you could instead turn around e.g. LIRR trains on lower frequency branches in New Jersey and NJT trains on lower frequency branches in Long Island, the capacity of Penn Station would increase without even having to build new tracks.

While all part of the MTA, they still keep MN, LIRR and Subway separate majority of the time for reasons including faster commutes for those outside the 5 boros to Manhattan. There is also the usual calls for the MTA to be broken up into at least 3-5 separate entities like before allowing NYC more control over subway, bus and local tolls.
NJT usually uses trains with 1 diesel engine on one end and 1 electric on the other. The electric powers the train in areas near and in NYC due to laws, once outside those areas it switches over to diesel since tracks outside the zones are not electrified.

I am from Germany, living in the area of the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn network ... the most recent change of the network was, to reduce certain lines from every 20 minutes to just every 30 minutes while adding an hourly express train on the S-Bahn tracks. Gaps between trains become larger and quite irregular - and sometimes the definition of local or express stops is raising some eyebrows: on the S9/RE49 there seem to be to too few express stop, while plans for the S6 see almost every stop as an express stop - local only are rather the low ridership stop that seemed to be candidates for being shut entirely.
In some places S-Bahn is in a weird position between the Regional Express (RE) and Stadtbahn (light rail) with its medium frequency, capacity, speed and distance between stops - with some passengers being glad they did not have to take the slower Stadtbahn and others frustrated they had just missed the faster RE ... ;-)

Regional rail is explicitly meant for long distance travel so removing seats is a bad idea. As a daily commuter from Brewster I hate spending 40 minutes on my feet.
You make suggestions that are more appropriate for a subway system(fyi: the LIR at Grand Central is really deep and way to expensive to extend.).
As someone trapped in a suburban NY community with out a car I can say we need better east west connections from the Metro north branches.
The two projects I’d like are a southeast NY to Danbury/ Waterbury/Hartford project, second a shoulder station or Flyover at Woodlawn junction where you could connect between the Harlem and New Haven lines.

I believe I have two great ideas one of them will be a commuter stop at 149th and Park Avenue on the Harlem Hudson in New Haven of connecting making some kind of connections to the old post office building on the Grand Concourse and making it to connect two platforms where commuters and people in the area can use a giant Hub like station setting at 149th and Park Avenue years ago used to be a station at 138th Street but that was taking out in the early to mid 70s my second idea where is the Second Avenue subway running the Second Avenue subway through a tunnel connecting under the Harlem River having a station on the other side in the Bronx since that's becoming to be very well highly populated replacing the old 3rd Avenue elevated having it run up to 100 and 49th Street having it run the right-of-way along 3rd Avenue underground or maybe Webster Avenue and connecting it to Fordham Road I think that would be a great idea

I think what would be great is a tunnel that connects the Bat Ridge branch at Brooklyn Army Terminal to New Jersey. I mean it’s like it was meant to be, they have the tracks going right up to the water, and there perfectly lined up with one the ports in NJ. You would no longer have to go to pass through Manhattan to get to NJ.

As a NYC Rail Buff since a kid I think that you should make a video on extending the L.I.R.R. from Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn to New Jersey with a stop somewhere in Lower Manhattan. Please make a video on that. Also make a video on extending the #7 train to Secaucus, NJ as it was once proposed during the #7 train expansion project. Secaucus has a big area to enable a "Park and Ride" for long distance drivers who come from very far that enter into the city without being in heavy traffic and polluting Manhattan's air quality. (Of course the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels will loose revenue but its less traffic and more revenue through ridership. The point of all of this is to let the MTA and other officials know that if they want to decrease traffic and emission gasses, they should expand these rail systems into New Jersey. Despite the hefty costs of all of this construction, revenue will be gained through ridership over the years. (Thus they make money back) Of course there will be red-tape and local community board meetings along with sharing the profits between the states of NY and NJ. As for the LIRR station at the UBS Stadium...I think that it will really only benefit Long Islanders living on Long Island. Most people from NYC would find it inconvenient to take a subway ride to Penn Station and then transfer and wait and pay more money in riding a commuter train just to see a hockey game, venue concert, or the triple crown horse race and the Belmont stakes which overloads the LIRR and has easy access to return to NYC because your on the subway sytem and you wont have to go all the way to Penn Station and overload that place.. The new UBS stadium is good because with more stadiums brings more events and tax dollars are made and local businesses can prosper. It also takes a load off of MSG and other arenas, thus providing more venues and more revenue. My idea is and PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON IT would be the extension of the F train all the way to the Queens -Nassau Border Line which sits on the Cross Island Parkway. Then, they just walk one block to the UBS Arena. (Note: The subway should only be extended to the Nassau County Line and not into Nassau County itself because of local opposition that can scrap the whole project) From 179th street and hillside avenue to the UBS Arena is only about 3 miles and those 3 miles in Queens are baron desert places with difficult transit options except for busses that are unreliable. Extending the F Train in this direction will also limit certain bus lines in queens and numerous NICE Busses that depart from Jamaica Station such as the N22 Bus into Nassau County making the traffic less and emitting less pollution. Also this route will end at Hempstead Turnpike which is a major thoroughfare in Nassau County providing faster and easier access to those that work in the city but live in Nassau County. The next subway stop could be an average 10 block from 179th street to 189th street and then another stop at 199th street then curving down Francis Lewis Blvd with a stop on Jamaica Ave/F.L.B and then continue unto Hempstead Avenue with another stop on 212th St/ Jamaica Avenue and Then Springfield Blvd and terminating on Hempstead Avenue right before the Cross island Parkway which is one block before the UBS Arena on the Queens/Nassau Border Line. With this new train extension, people can travel faster. Ridership and revenue will grow. stores will open up by train stations making communities prosper and more taxes for the city/state. Neighborhoods will improve. Less traffic and pollution. Areas will be gentrified. Run down areas will renovate and possibly new structures built. Yuppies can come in? Well...LOL. Maybe not? Most important...one can get around better if on foot and especially in bad weather. I moved to Nassau County from NYC 1 year ago and if it's not for my car, I would be stranded or it would take a long uncomfortable time for me to go back to Manhattan to visit my family and friends. And of course...my job which is in the city! To get the attention of law makers and politicians is to start with a Facebook like page. A news source told me that a Facebook like page with at least a minimum of 1,000 like brings attention to the news papers, media, and the politicians.

My idea/dream for NYC regional rail is to have NJ Transit extend to Sunnyside Yard which would have a new station built on the spot. This would have to wait until Gateway is completed since the current North River Tunnels are maxed out capacity wise. Also, the loop at Secaucus would need to be built in order to allow NJT Hoboken Division trains to run into NYC.
This would allow people coming from NJ to go to destinations in Queens and Long Island faster without having transfer onto the Subway at Penn Station or Port Authority if they are coming from NJ on the bus. Instead of having to crowd onto the subway in Midtown, travelers can just make transfers to LIRR instead at Sunnyside. This would alleviate the E train in particular. You can also try to create a massive transfer station/complex with all the local subways stations in the area.
What are your thoughts on this idea?

Aswell as maybe a video to fix traffic long bus corridors (largely known and a common one I ride in my daily commute the M15 & M15 SBS) which is always stuck in traffic (perhaps maybe separated bus lanes with pullover stops?), Let me know what you think and I would love to hear your opinion on this I think it's also a great way for everyone to learn more about more transit opportunities and a so much more friendlier world to travel in.

Even now at some routes on the Long Island RR and Metro-North I see some passengers getting free rides because the conductor couldn’t get to them in time. Especially when the passenger gets on and rides it only 1 stop. None of the cities in the United States will ever be like Japan’s. In Japan some transit and commuter rails intermix in certain spots. Here the clueless FRA won’t allow that. The Port Washington branch of the Long Island rail Road would be great for NYC Transit to run as a local & have the Long Island RR express on separate tracks. That would make sense but it ain’t gonna happen.

When you take that train to the Staten Island ferry when you get off you have to pay to get out. But the slick people of Staten Island found another way to cheat the fare. They got off at the stop before st George terminal. So the MTA thought they were smart and made it where they have to pay to get out on that second station. Those Staten Islanders was so cheap they got off and walk to the Ferry from the third stop...... back to talking about the MTA commuter lines. OMG through running through Penn will NEVER work since the EQUIPMENT is not compatible. You can always implement OMNY on Jersey Transit. But say you want to go down this rabbit hole. Either you’re buying new rolling stock that can handle multiple power supplies, which only adds to the price per car, or you re-electrify entire networks. That’s not cheap. And stop with the Siemens Chargers if you said EMU’s are the way to go. But most importantly, through running only helps with operations, not commuters. Look at SEPTA. Hardly anybody rides from one side to the other. And oftentimes, it requires a change of train, because what are the chances your train will run to the branch you need on the other side? You’d wind up spending untold billions PER PASSENGER for this new service, a bargain compared to the 2nd Ave Subway.

Im 50/50 with you on this one. I feel like your trying to turn the railroad into a subway which is not going to work. Especially since the new station proposals you made are a bad a idea with the Harlem Line as they are way to close together for a railroad. I also talked to alot of Transit Fans and knowledgeable friends I know and they said the 2nd Ave subway is good the way it is with maybe suggestion to extend it to the Bronx. Only thing i can agree on that I can see them changing is frequency and seating. Great vid!

You need to use trains in London bro you are wrong it can work as they do it in Tokyo , Paris, London sort of still with terminals that should be through running like their crossrail and Thames link it can be done in NY too. Philadelphia had their regional rail literally copy the s-Bahn concept in NYC it will just have to be different lines. New lines can be created by simply turning NJT , LIRR and MNRR into through running operations and in many cases the trains don’t even have to cross each other’s networks they can loop back.
