US Vice President Joe Biden visited Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Monday, at the start of a Middle East tour which will also include visits to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan.
Biden visited the mosque early on Monday morning, pausing outside to remove his black dress shoes in keeping with Islamic custom.
The UAE is an important US Gulf ally and a regional commercial hub.
Biden followed the mosque visit with a trip to Masdar City, a model for a clean-energy city on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi.
The White House has said that Biden's trip will include talks with key leaders on US economic and energy interests, as well as security concerns about Iran and Syria.
