Riddle: When is a rebuilt engine not a rebuilt engine?... When you didn't do it yourself...

Thank you. I have learned a lot about welding and machining from people on UA-cam who are willing to share, so I Like to do my bit.

The words every engine builder listens for: "It's all been gone through and should be fine" ...Dave

Love those Enfields. The heads you have are for single carb, dual carb heads have mounting boss cast on the head. Two carbs on those heads require special manfold. Also the sngle carb heads and barrels taper to the rear.

Dowty washers for the rocker feeds. They're brilliant.

    Hi Michael,
you might have a hard time finding a new sprocket for the Chief, as they aren't made any more. They are off-set to the left, providing more space for the wide 16" tire, and even if you'd wan't to use it without offset it has 6 splines insead of the standard 5 on other Enfields, and a slightly larger shaft diametre.
I made a new one and the tooling for it for my Chief though, so if you need help, give me a call.
    Andreas

Hello Andreas. Thank you for the information. As the engine is going into a Trailblazer I will not need the offset but it is a bummer to hear about the splines and shaft diameter. I am going to have to make a sprocket for the XS750/Commando project so it looks like now I will be making two. However I will keep your generous offer in mind.

I'm familiar with BSA and Triumph but no experience with the Enfield designs. Would be interesting to have a video from you doing a 'workshop opinion' comparing the features, +s and -s of each design from Triumph, BSA, Norton, R.Enfield, and AJS/Matchless from the '50s.
I came into the trade and industry in the early '60s and marveled at the new crop of Honda twins and their quality. Was not so impressed with the BSA twins and that sleeve timing side main bearing; heard over the years about flukes with AJS/Matchless crankshaft weaknesses even though they had a center main bearing.
You're very thorough and your impressions would perhaps make interesting and educational outreach to fellas trying to work on these old twins

Don't know if I have enough knowledge for that but I will bear it in mind. Sometimes early material quality was not consistent but over the years I have found that people talk about systemic problems with certain bikes and then when you meet people who ran those bikes they never had a problem. It is like the B25 big ends, read up on them and they are a disaster with everyone talking about oil filters, regular oil changes etc being needed and still not saving you from constantly failing bearings. I have never had a big end fail on one. So, just goes to show.

Thanks, Michael. We had no failures on them, either, and we kept servicing well after BSA/Tri. went kaput. Only warranty work that came to our shop was a B-50 bought in Holland that had one of the cylinder studs pull out of the crankcase; apparently was turned down too far on the threads and a new one fixed it.
I owned a Matchless G2CS in the early '60s and it went through three crank pins from breakage which, I understand, was pretty typical of the initial batch of 'em.

A little bit of heat would've made it easier to split the barrels

Gearbox sprocket 'well hooked', sorry Michael, I thought you said 'f**ked'. Shame on me!

As I now discover that the M type gearbox sprockets are virtually unobtainable you might have been right.

I was caught out by your loovly Yorkshire accent, not yet tainted with an American twang. Your advice on workshop attire was most helpful, it might improve my spanner wielding skills.
