Major thanks for this Kevin!! You saved my A! IMHO this is one of the most important videos on You Tube! I was in a bind needing to produce a simple video and I downloaded and deleted other editing software to try for 3 hours until I found yours. I was so frustrated at this point! I just used the 1st one you mentioned: The video editor that comes with windows--and my video turned out great in no time at all. I wish it had a few more features--but it had the essentials easy and fast to use. Can't tell you the number of compliments I received on my 10 minute video. I filmed an event a few weeks ago, and I was able to crop the beginning, the end, add some JPEGs, and Microsoft covered the sound track with their no license music--perfect! All the best to you for a great summer! When I get a chance I will watch the rest of your video to see if there is an editor that is better than Microsoft. I used to use the MS Movie editor all the time on my old computers but I can't find a recent download for Windows 10/11 on my new computer.
Thanks Kevin. I was looking for something to top and tail a video in a 16:10 ratio at 3840x2400. I went with Shotcut, because it just matched those settings when I added the video to the project. I'd not heard of Shotcut before (I don't usually work with video) so thank you so much for including it in your selection.

I have been using DaVinci Resolve for 9 months now. It’s actually amazing how powerful it is, even compared with Filmora X paid and Premier Pro. One drawback i can note out is the transitions. There is a 60% the transition will go onto the clip. Other than that, great software. Totally will recommend people to use it!
Hello Kevin, I thoroughly enjoyed your videos and just happened on this one. Your series on Excel is where I found your channel. You, using DaVinci Resolve with the steep learning curve, is like my getting into Excel, bumping around in the dark, learning every minute. I look forward to learning to use DaVinci Resolve in my next business; this will help a lot.
Hey Kevin, for starters your videos are amazing. It saved me unnecessary udemy payments for the same tutorials on visio, excel basics and a lot more. I am a youtuber too but more of a content creator in music. Your passion for youtube is really motivating for me, as I handle my passion and my profession together. 14 years in Microsoft sounds really interesting. I hope to grow like you someday! Regards, an engineer whos sings! :)
Nice Kevin! I'm 72 and just starting out. You have a good screen presence and a good voice. Used to be in customer service and sales, so I know what I'm talking about. You might want to set your microphone volume up a bit. Going to start a UA-cam channel. Keep it up!!!
One drawback to Shotcut is that the "Undo" doesn't affects anything happening in the filter. For example I misplace a text and wants to move it back to its original position, If I press "Undo" it will undo things I change in the timeline not in the filter. Note: It really stressed me out especially because I did mistakes a lot 😐
For anyone intrested: at the moment the people working on Shotcut are working on this feature. Perhaps the next bigger update will include the feature.
Your presentation is top-notch. I really appreciate that you broke everything into chapters devoted to each individual option. I'm going for Da Vinci and subscribing.
Another great video. I stumbled upon the Windows Video Editor by accident when trying to play back a video and decided to hit the edit in the drop down. Mind blown. It's great for beginner stuff and most importantly FREE and not on my phone.
One huge drawback of ShotCut is the memory limitation. In an ordinary home PC, it constantly reminds that the memory is insufficient and the project either has to be abandoned or split into smaller parts. Making a video lasting over an hour is nearly impossible due to this memory shortage. Otherwise it is a great piece of software.
I've tried most of these, but my favorite free editor is VideoProc Vlogger. Very powerful, very easy to use, and there are lotsa great tutorials out there. Amazed at what a free editor will let me do. Surprised it's not in your list.
Thanks for this, Kevin. I haven't worked with footage since WMM and Windows 7, so this is going to be new. So far, DR 17 is looking good. I'm fine with a steep learning curve. I tended to rely solely on jump cuts, to a lessor degree, the traditional fade. A great deal of planning went into those jump cuts though, and in some videos, I used them quite liberally. I'm not too far from replacing my old computer, and I'm looking forward to the editing process again. Can't wait! I'm getting excited! Video editing turned out to be a labor of love, and I truly miss it.
I use Openshot its simple and serve the purpose. it has a few limitation which reminds me i am using a free video editor. but overall the satisfaction rate is 8/10, nice video mate. cheers
I watched the full video on the Free Windows 10 video editor and it sounded like just what I needed and, as a beginner, I understood everything about it, which is surprising. I will be creating my first ever video and your explanation has sold me on the Windows 10, although I may be able to use Open Shot as well. Thanks for your clear explanation and encouragement

Good summary Kevin. I agree with your views however my personal choice is Shotcut. I like DaVinci Resolve but I do find that the limitations on what you can do a little frustrating. I am by no means an expert however. DaVinci Resolve I believe is from Melbourne Australia where I live and I should be supporting the local product but each to their own.

Good content. Well done on a great lead in the presentation. Domestic, amateur, family video style editor myself. No aspirations to become anything else. Moviemaker back in the day was ahead of its time. Pitty MS sometimes lets things slip. Mobility is also important to me. My mobile far outway the old PC at home. Camera's Insta 360, GoPro, Mobile. Nowadays I rarely just use a single app/ software. Insta 360 app editor to extract footage and some editing functions, Samsung mobile onboard vid editor to trim (while on Pub transport), Quick from GoPro sometimes, WIN10 Video Editor for 3D effects, Shotcut for video and sound combination (nice tool). A special mention for a recently discovered software in MS store. Movie Maker 10. Still on a learning curve with this one.
Are you able to create a video in one app or program and then easily open it in a diff program on PC? Like to add additional flair; like lay in background audio, or splice in a screenshot or downloaded internet clip? ShotCut to start with as a beginner sounds smart but may want to embellish, change or make improvements to a video later as experience grows with a more premium product like Davinci. Is it possible to pull the edited videos apart after being created with a mobile app and/or Shortcut?
@@SneekySecrets Hi, awesome for reaching out. The short answer to all your questions is yes. Because content is digital one can change and manipulate over and over. To create edible content one can shoot in any platform these days. Once edible content on one device you can start your edit. That edit needs to be finalized/ exported 1st before you can use it in another software when confidence grows. For instance in my case I'm useless with adapting or enhancing colour. When I get better PC that is able to run 4k and DaVinci that will be a skill I'll be keen to learn. Best of luck.
So how is your experience with OpenShot? Did you find it easy to use, to add audio, splice videos together with like an intro, Subscribe button and other secret sauce add-ins? I'm new too.
Now that I am looking in to it, it is kind of complex but one you get the hang of it you'll be good. I am going to say that it doesn't have many features and it's and basic video editor.
After the free version of video pad ends (idk how long it is) you cant export your videos anymore. So you might put in a lot of hours on a project just to realise after everythign is finished that you have to buy the full version to be able to export your video. Wouldnt recommend
Hey Kevin, Thank you for the video editor compilation. It has saved me hours, if not days, in trying out various editors myself and picking one. And Yes, you do sound robotic, but it's cool. Keep it that way. Cheers :)
Thank you Kevin for this informative video. I like that you point out the down sides of each so that I am prepared for the caveats. One thing that I would like is that you oint out what system requirements for each are. I have an old 32bit windows machine so cannot use something that is for 64 bit and it sometimes only comes to light after download.
These types of video are that I most love. These FREE editors give you a lump of confidence that you need to purchase editors to make good videos. But there is one suggestion I would like to give about the thumbnail. I think you could have probably chosen a different colour for the background instead of that dull green. Maybe even a bright green would do the job. Other than that fantastic stuff!
I use ShotCut. I started with Premier Elements, couldn't get on with that at any level. Next came VSDC where I just could not understand enough of it to get going and too few tutorials available at the time. Looking around my short list back then was DV Resolve, Filmora and Shotcut. I am now considering moving over to DV Resolve. Informative and clear video by the way.
Great video and clear introduction to the software. Thank you! Which of these allows me to combine images with videos? Or make a slideshow of photos with music?
Really helpful overview, Kevin. Availability of instruction videos (UA-cam) is so important - and you've been great on Excel stuff for me, so... Davinci Resolve is where I will go first.
I saw one video of yours thats' whcih help me alot after that whenever i need any tutorial for any help i always come to your channel Thanks for great videos
The thing that draws me away from Davinci is it seems to barely support any files. I have files in MP4, MOV and AVI the only ones that it supports for me are MP4 meaning I would have to convert all the files I want to use if I want to use Davinci. The programme is great but something to consider if you don't use MP4.
Hey, thanks for that bit of info! I need to be able to use many different file types and render them to MP4 within the program, so it looks like DaVinci is out.
Hi Kevin. Do any of these video editors allow you to add still images so that you can combine both video and still photography similar to the old Pro Show Producer? I am trying to find something that allows me to combine both (like a Ken Burns documentary that lets you put some motion into a still photograph).
Even the default video editor in windows lets you do some of that though transitions like proshow producer are not there. Openshot maybe a better option if you don't want a steeper learning curve.
THANKYOU. I just got into this two weeks ago, and My first major edited video apparently got messed up while using microsoft Clipchamp. I was having nothing but glitches, misplaced audio, black screens, Random playing audio when I was placing a new clip into a timeline, and a whole other host of problems. Plus, I can only have one example of a project at once, rather than recycle footage from one video to another for things like B-roll. Could not be done. You're saving lives here, mate!
kevin i currently make small music videos that i edit together with my dj music. which of these for ease of use and transition effects do you recomend? kdenlive or shotcut? my main concerns are ease of lining up shots to the music, lots of effects i can layer on top to go with the music and transitions. i currently use inshot on iphone which is very simple. but im looking to get on my pc and doing more.
Thanks a lot Kevin for this very helpful overview! I'm looking for a video editing software that is able to crop footage. I want to turn a 1980x1080 (16:9) video into a 1440x1080 (4:3) video. Not letterboxing or zooming, but actually cropping pixels off the image and changing the aspect ratio and resolution that way. Is this possible with all these editors?
I'm on a MacBook Pro so I use iMovie which comes with Mac OS. Although it is not cross-platform, it does pretty much what I need. I watched your video out of curiosity and found it very interesting. I may consider Shotcut if I decide to venture out of the Mac world. Thanks for a great video. Also enjoyed your tutorial on Audacity which I do use from time to time. Learned a lot from that one. Thanks again.
Hi Kevin, thanks for the nice overview! I really like Da Vinci resolve, but it has trouble reading the H265 kodec used in the latest Hero cameras. It was unfortunate since I just bought Hero 9. I haven't found a good answer to this problem, so I'm looking for alternative program. I've previously used OpenShot, but find it a little too easy. But it has no problem with H265! Do you know if ShotCut and Kdenlive read H265? Sincerely Tommy
@@frederickcoolidge8956 Hi, I finally got the add-on needed to view the H265 codec, so now I'm back to Da vinci resolve. I have not tried the go pro software, as I am happy with the DVR. It is a lot of work to get acquainted with video editing regardless of the program, so it is best to stick to one software. For newcomers like me, who mostly cut and paste some text and transitions, DVR is the easiest of the ones I have tried. KDlive is also a very nice, but more work with transitions, but on the plus side it reads H265 files in windows 10.😀
MTN, where did you get the add-on needed for the H265 codec in DVR? I am getting ready to download DVR and will be working with GoPro hero 10 footage? thank you
I currently use the defunct Proshow Producer. What I am not seeing in these offerings is creation of your own teransitions. Is this possible in any of the free editors?
When I tried to use it about 8 months ago, Windows 10 Video Editor had transitioned into MS Clipchamp. I've used it and it works for what I needed it for, and is free w/o watermarks. It requires payment for some features. I'm not sure if that's what Windows officially replaced it with or not.
I don't have a windows account and don't care to make a new email so it's pretty annoying. I even tried to sign up with Gmail. I just wanna change the orientation on a simple vid.
Thank you Kevin, this was very helpful!! I'm trying to start a UA-cam gaming channel with my PS4 and after this video, I'm trying to decide between Openshot and DaVinci. Though I might take some baby steps with Openshot, first.

I went with open shot since I’m not making anything too complicated. Thanks for the video mate
@@Ryuzaki2100 Totally agrees with that.
Damn! Thank you man. I never even knew Widows 10 has an editing app
Informative and clear video by the way.
im not even joking this is one of the best videos i have ever seen on editing bro you are a legend
Thank you for every tutorial Kevin!! More Power
Downloading OpenShot, seems promising. I'm hoping to create a combo video out of my clips from Smash Bros Melee. Wish me luck!
is it any good?
@@cypriotguy9265 struggled with it greatly in many departments. My apologies.
@@bacheese ok thanks for your reply.
Great video and clear introduction to the software. Thank you!
Which of these allows me to combine images with videos? Or make a slideshow of photos with music?
this has aged really really well love this dude
NO CLICK BAIT. This guy is just awesome, what a guy.
thank you, thank you, thank you. you are a LEGEND!!!!
Really helpful overview, Kevin. Availability of instruction videos (UA-cam) is so important - and you've been great on Excel stuff for me, so... Davinci Resolve is where I will go first.
Saving this for future reference. Thanks, Kevin!
Thank you Kevin for helping all of us low income UA-camrs I am very glad that I came across this video
The only youtuber I would immediately check whenever I have questions!
Great info! Useful! Thanks! Can you do a video for free animation editors for non-animators?
I would also enjoy this 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Yay I’m here like immediately
Thank you so much! I really needed a editor but I couldn't find one. 😉
Your welcome I have a class for video editing this Saturday 20# admission
You're really good at making these videos. Keep it up!!
I saw one video of yours thats' whcih help me alot after that whenever i need any tutorial
for any help i always come to your channel
Thanks for great videos
The thing that draws me away from Davinci is it seems to barely support any files. I have files in MP4, MOV and AVI the only ones that it supports for me are MP4 meaning I would have to convert all the files I want to use if I want to use Davinci. The programme is great but something to consider if you don't use MP4.
Hey, thanks for that bit of info! I need to be able to use many different file types and render them to MP4 within the program, so it looks like DaVinci is out.
Awesome ❤️ Thanks :) Going to start with openshot !
Hi Kevin. Do any of these video editors allow you to add still images so that you can combine both video and still photography similar to the old Pro Show Producer? I am trying to find something that allows me to combine both (like a Ken Burns documentary that lets you put some motion into a still photograph).
Adobe Premier Elements is great for what you are asking. Not free but really inexpensive.
Even the default video editor in windows lets you do some of that though transitions like proshow producer are not there. Openshot maybe a better option if you don't want a steeper learning curve.
Dude, you are the GOAT. You helped me so much with GIMP as well when it comes to editing my thumbnails/banners. 👏👏👏
I’ve had blender for a while, so I guess open shots the best one for me
Wow, thanks ! do you know if any of them can do side by side, split screen capablities
kevin i currently make small music videos that i edit together with my dj music. which of these for ease of use and transition effects do you recomend? kdenlive or shotcut? my main concerns are ease of lining up shots to the music, lots of effects i can layer on top to go with the music and transitions. i currently use inshot on iphone which is very simple. but im looking to get on my pc and doing more.
let me know when you find the answer to this please
@@MidnightMotivation0 currently im just downloading both since theyre free and see wich one i can pick up the best for workflow
Kdenlive is to complex for an easy video editor.. I tried it for a few min then uninstalled it.
Found this video today because I am wanting to find a good free video editor and this helped a lot, thank you!
Hi Kevin - another very useful video. Can you make us one for LibreCAD please?
Thanks a lot Kevin for this very helpful overview! I'm looking for a video editing software that is able to crop footage. I want to turn a 1980x1080 (16:9) video into a 1440x1080 (4:3) video.
Not letterboxing or zooming, but actually cropping pixels off the image and changing the aspect ratio and resolution that way. Is this possible with all these editors?
The windows video editor has a profile or landscape and a 9:16 or 4:3 options.
"Windows 10 video editor is great, except it can't do shit!" thanks bro
I always appreciate your content my brother. You seem very genuine. Thanks
Great video!
There are other video editing apps also such as Filmora, VSDC and VEGAS...
In my oppinion filmora almost broke my pc and it has watermarks he mentioned at the start of the video that these apps / editors have no watermarks
@@poist1857 Good point!
Sincerely Tommy
if you dont mind me asking, why dont you use the free go pro software?
@@frederickcoolidge8956 Hi, I finally got the add-on needed to view the H265 codec, so now I'm back to Da vinci resolve.
I have not tried the go pro software, as I am happy with the DVR. It is a lot of work to get acquainted with video editing regardless of the program, so it is best to stick to one software.
For newcomers like me, who mostly cut and paste some text and transitions, DVR is the easiest of the ones I have tried.
KDlive is also a very nice, but more work with transitions, but on the plus side it reads H265 files in windows 10.😀
@@frederickcoolidge8956 gopro doesn't have a computer software anymore.
MTN, where did you get the add-on needed for the H265 codec in DVR? I am getting ready to download DVR and will be working with GoPro hero 10 footage? thank you
@@tlvomfell Hi, I bought this at microsoft, costs a trifle, but a lot of hassle. You need to have an account with them to make this happen. Good luck!
I currently use the defunct Proshow Producer. What I am not seeing in these offerings is creation of your own teransitions. Is this possible in any of the free editors?
You can build your own transitions with DaVinci Resolve.
@@KevinStratvert Thanks, Kevin
Thank you so much for this video! I will definitely use the shortcut app editor for my UA-cam videos!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!
For the 1st Video Editor, can we put a timer(countdown) to a video?
Yeah
@@ItsJustAddy966 Can u tell me how?
Open shot looks like it has a good and user friendly ui so my best shot is to go with open shot (haha you see what i did there?😎😎😎
Windows 10 Video Editor doesn't work anymore, unfortunately
OpenShot works quite well so far! Thank you for the idea!
When filmora lies to you:
😔
yeah i agree almost broke my pc tbh
it has watermarks also so its bad :((
Lmao righttt
Just a friendly reminder that everyone commenting are bots.
What do u mean ?
@@gregmidtek899 This guy uses bots to comment on his video. You can tell it by the way they are literally same comments in different sentences.
If anyone is actually looking for a good video editor, look up Davinci Resolve 18.

Hey Kevin, you're the best. I think we will be judged only by how we treat others. You're a good guy in all directions. Thank you. Keep up the altruistic work.

This is the best video by far, your video helped me find editing software's that are on my level.
