$600 Million Dollar Crypto Hack - POLYNETWORK Exploit!

- DEFI is great until someone hacks you... then it kinda sucks...
The cybercriminals exploited a vulnerability in Poly Network, a platform that looks to connect different blockchains so that they can work together. Poly Network disclosed the attack Tuesday and asked to establish communication with the hackers, urging them to “return the hacked assets.” [CNBC: www.cnbc.com/2...]

This video is an opinion and in no way should be construed as statements of fact. Scams, bad business opportunities, and fake gurus are subjective terms that mean different things to different people. I think someone who promises $100K/month for an upfront fee of $2K is a scam. Others would call it a Napoleon Hill pitch.

The way you throw shade at Tether by saying that they didn't wan to see those tokens redeemed got me dead 😂
This happens ALOT with hackers. Sometimes they find an exploit, get very far and then realize that what they have done has real world consequences because it was all a game.
Not a hacker, just has a slight rebellious streak. But yeah, it happens. You thought it'd be fun and thrilling yet not expecting much out of it, but then you actually succeeded and you're like.. ehh wtf? Umm

Seems like alot of hackers are more interested in the process of hacking than the actual money. Its like breaking into the bank vault but you forgot to put gas in the get away car.😂
If this hacker is able to get ahold of so much, imagine what someone who planned ahead could have gotten away with.
All the funds were eventually returned. This guy 100% was going to take the money if he could.
Yeah if he could disappear without a trace he would. Wouldn't he have been able to move the money into monero since it was a privacy coin? Then wait it out years before moving it in small amounts.
@@Storm_x He might have gotten away with some of the funds. But monero isn't 100% anonymous. Especially with such large amounts, it would be difficult to completely hide all the transactions even with mixins. Depends how greedy he is. If he only took a few million and slowly sold off his monero. Maybe?
There are probably so many people taking small amounts through this exploit and are sooo pissed right now lmao.

This seems like an Elliot Alderson type. Brilliant genius hacker but a little unhinged up there.
If that was Elliot Alderson, not a word spoken after that, just complete silence.
If this guy was the genius everyone was making out, why steal it all in one lump sum?
Why not inconspicuous increments over a period of time (the patient game)?
Or numerous smaller amounts to 100s or 1000s of different wallets then filter it through a tumbler/mixer service to retrieve it?
Elliot Alderson would've had this all figured out and probably would've donated the coins to charities or just burnt them all.
Edit: actually, he would've likely just distributed all the coins to wallets with the lowest sums. And he would've jacked it from the whales to endow it to the shrimps.
Who?
@@JaysonT1 The hacker main character in the Mr. Robot TV show.
@@undefinedvariable8085 He couldn't transfer it slowl, that would've been stupid. Because he only had one chance. Let me explain.
Basically the part of the code that was vulnerable was changed so drastically that exploiting it even once would've gotten the attention of the developers which would've been very confused. They would have noticed and fixed it immediately.
So what did he do? The part of the smart-contract he exploited had the job of verifying some other part of the code to see if it transferred/handled funds like it is supposed to. The hacker changed its function entirely to "Ignore whatever happens to those funds and how they're handled. Every type of handling is ok.". This allowed him to transfer legit money to his wallet which would've otherwise been disallowed. However this would've also affected all other fund transfers with that smart-contract, and thus was a very risky exploit.
So, whatever money he had to withdraw, he had to do it the first time.
When someone gets caught, the really do act like little children.

@@jaymevosburgh3660 True, but I’m not sure anyone really likes the “throwing money at it” solution. In Africa, many see it as neo-colonialism and trying to buy and exploit Africa. In the countries donating, the people often see it as a waste of money because it’s going to ineffective governments.

Defi assumes that politicians, regulators, and providers of capital will voluntarily give up control of the transfer & payment mechanisms. Which just makes me laugh and laugh
There are politicians all over the spectrum who support decentralized finance. Everything also needs to go through the democratic system. It seems very possible enough people will support it that politicians will too, just to get votes. Also it is very difficult to outlaw protocols and property in the west, and the whole point of decentralization is to protect against government or corporate interference so it could adapt its technology if it had to.

Well stock exchanges require a minimum market cap and public float. Crypto coins don't. I can make 500 new coins that only me and my friends own, that doesn't make it more or less of a bubble. Because it has no impact on the market.

This is one of many reasons why crypto currency is greatly flawed. Once they are hacked, people will lose their investments. Not only that, since that company got hacked, its reputation will tarnish and its value will go down, making people who have investments still lose a ton of money 🤔🤔🤔
I always wonder that too. What happens if they are hacked. Is there anyway to get your money back? I mean the old systems suck yes definitely but if something happens to your investment like someone hacks your bank account they are usually able to help you and get your money back.
You only lose if you don't sell before the next guy lol
HEX removes that risk. Exchanges have your keys so your always at risk. that’s not true crypto or decentralization.
Although it’s good to see he wasn’t able to cash in the stolen coins, this prettt much destroys the whole “decentralized finance” myth. If he was able to be black listed and not exchange his coins, that means these institutions are completely centralized, that the story of crypto being permissionless is not true. It pokes a huge whole in crypto currency.
