Glad that you found the damage prior to getting on the bike. That is a great reminder for us to be diligent with our safety checks. Although I think the plug would hold with no problem, I would replace the tire. I have always viewed plugging a motorcycle tire is something that you do in an emergency to get you home or someplace safe. Once you are safe, you replace the tire. If a plug goes bad (or quickly loses air) on a car tire it is usually not fatal. A plug that is faulty on a motorcycle tire can be. Just my 2 cents. Great video. Ride safe.
Hey Chris... Happy Annual Marriage Contract lol. Man I just want to say that you have the correct tittle for this video. We were on a mini vacation this a few years back and I had a huge nail in the rear tire. We noticed it during the inspection we were approximately 700 mi from home in Flagstaff AZ. I plugged the tire but that didn't go well and I had to get my Wing towed. However I/we are guilty of not doing an inspection prior to every ride. Thanks for the reminder. We are riding tomorrow morning and will definitely do the inspection.

I'm Guilty. I just love the opportunities when I get to ride, so I basically just hop on and go (easy to do with a Goldwing). If nothing else I will at least check the tires. What else should I look at as well? Long or short trips

Yep, you potentially dodged disaster. Had rear tire blow out on my first Wing years ago and managed to stay upright and get to the side. No fixing that tire. 2 years ago coming back from Texas on a Saturday, picked up a screw and used my plug kit to get me back home, 700 miles with no problem. Also had no choice on a weekend. Usually I’ll plug and keep going but keep a really close eye on it and if initial damage is anything more than a small nail or screw I replace. Good topic!
Wow Chris, that could have been bad. So happy you found that screw before you took Big Black out. Low tire pressure or even worse having it go completely flat while riding is a recipe for disaster. It happened to me once on a new rear tire when a small, one inch piece of ceramic material cut a hole clean through and the tire went flat so quick I had no time to slow down. I was only going about 40 mph but I barely kept the bike up until I could stop. The tire came off the rim as I was slowing down and the rear end started fishtailing wildly. I've never had to use one of those plugs in a motorcycle tire but most people say they are just good enough to get you to the shop for a new tire. I've heard they can sling out while riding. They work good in a car tire that has a flat surface where they contact the road but not so good in a rounded motorcycle tire. When you clean out the hole make sure you get it as good as possible, then use a LOT of the rubber cement on the plug when you put it in the tire. As far as doing a daily pre-ride check, I ride everyday for the most part so, no. I do check my tire pressures often. My last bike had those tire pressure sensors (TPS system) and you could push a button to see the pressures both front and rear, it was cool and would give you a warning on the dash if either one was low. I check my lights before I come home from work, do a little walk around as I put my gear on. Happy Anniversary and stay safe! Gary

I always check over the bike, including the air psi before I ride. Tire plugs are for emergencies, chuck that tire and get a new one on there.
