6 Years in the Making: Our Productive Bamboo Forest

  • It's hard to believe we began planting our organic bamboo six years ago.
It was the first crop we grew here on Poreang Farm, and now it dwarfs everything else on the land.
With over 100 clumps, our bamboo forest produces large amounts of edible shoots, some of which we preserve, and provides plenty of building material for use around the farm.
We also make high-grade biochar from old bits of bamboo and reintroduce it into the forest to help improve the soil.
We feed our plants with manure from our farm's goat herd and apply leaves as a thick mulch to help retain moisture in the soil.

Great to have your own bamboo. Very convenient. We have over 250 bunches of many different varieties. There are 6 bunches on their 2nd year that you can eat raw. Snap it off and eat it like a carrot. Very nice. Can hook you up with the grower if you want to order some.
BTW I just got the ear buds. Hope they work out.

That's what I'm getting for dinner tonight ! Soup Normai 😊. Weve only just started growing bamboo but the neighbours keep telling us to help ourselves to their bamboo. Both shoots and poles. So its bamboo soup, sticky rice and nam prik for dinner.

Excellent Chris. Before coming to Thailand I'd only ever tried bamboo in Chinese dishes.
Never overly impressed, so I was pleasantly surprised to try it over here and I've never looked back 🤣

@@ToonLeighporpeangfarmThailand I was the same. Chinese food introduced me to soggy, limp bamboo that mostly came out of cans. Fresh from the bamboo grove here, is a completely different experience! Nid made so much, we have enough for breakfast too! 😄

Chinampas I think is what you were looking for 17:45; originally a Mexican technique of having water trenches between rows of plants; I've seen it used elsewhere in Thailand. Also, attracting and encouraging dragonfly will reduce the mozzie and other insect population, while looking beautiful. Thanks for the great video about your bamboo.

That's the one thank you lol.
I think they look fantastic & applied in the right location are a brilliant growing system.
As far as the dragon flies go, wow, each year we get more & more here on the farm.
It's most noticeable when the goats are let out on pasture & disturb the bugs.
We also see lots when we are strimming.

Plant yourself some water chestnuts & you're half way to your own Chinese takeaway with the bamboo. Two must side orders with a takeaway....bamboo shoots & water chestnuts and a bag of chicken balls. You ever try growing asparagus? Asparagus in oyster sauce..mmmmmm. Better stop before I work my way through the whole bloody takeaway menu 🤣
