- Randy Newberg sets out for his 2018 Montana Mule Deer hunt. Joined by his good friend and neighbor Bart May, they have a few days to fill a limited entry deer tag outside of their home in Bozeman.
Using the llamas to carry gear and hopefully meat, they head out from the trailhead up a canyon where Bart has hunted in years past. Along the way they bump into multiple moose, but aren't seeing a lot of deer.
#deerhunting #hunting #montana
Once they really start gaining elevation they spot a nice buck pushing a group of does. They continued to hike up hoping to relocate the group. After lunch, they hike up to where they think the deer might be bedded.
After finding the does, the buck finally shows up and beds down within sight. Randy gets a great shot and his tag is filled. Bart and Randy tag and quarter out the buck, load it on the llamas, and head back down to the trailhead.

"Montana Double Date!" that 's awesome! Been there, done that. Great hunt fellas!
Lamas 1, “ does this Randy guy do anything besides hunting?”
Lama 2, “ Yes of course, he fishes”
Lama 1, “oh ok, must be nice to be Randy”
Lama 2, “ yes yes it is, so now after all we have done for him this year, do you think he still wants to shoot us🤔🤣?”
That's funny stuff.
I agree. Very funny. Great comment.
yes. very funny comment indeed
Good to see Bart back on the screen.
We are blessed to get watch you hunt randy. Thank you for all that you do. I appreciate the videos you put out. It was joy to see the smile on your face explaining how blessed you really are.
Thanks for the kind comments. I am truly blessed and these videos are further proof. Thanks for watching.
Bart & your mulie sliding down the mt side🤣🤣🤣 thanks for adding the caiber & bullet you used😎👍👍👍
Really love your channel. Keep hitting home runs.
Thanks for watching.
There is nothing wrong with a one day hunt. Good job. Nice buck.
I like how you always thank the animal when you first walk up on them.
I feel a lot of gratitude when an animal gives it life so I can eat. Glad to hear you appreciate that moment of thanks. Seems the least I can do for that animal.
Don't count till you get to 65, then count backwards. Figuring it that way I'm 58. Should be younger than you in three yrs. Enjoy, it only gets better.😏
Thanks for another humble and realistic hunting film, Mr. Newberg. And thanks especially for filming cool stuff right in our backyard.
Great video and good to see Bart again. Imagine a Randy/Bart/Beau episode. Powerhouse trio right there
What a great early birthday present. Great video. Keep them coming.
Happy belated Birthday Randy! Cool looking buck, what an incredible birthday present.
Thanks, Dean.
Between Bow and Riffle season we hiked more than 100 hard Montana miles this past season. Absolutely nothing wrong with getting it done in one day.
Great to see Bart again!
I live in Louisiana and been to Wyoming three times on public land an killed a nice mule deer the third year. Going to a private range nov. 20 on an elk hunt. It will be my first in two ways. It’s guilted and I have never killed an elk
Good luck.
Pretty sure Bart was on the first video of yours I ever saw about hunting black bear. Inspired me to come out west for my first hunt ever this year! Keep up the good videos.
That's cool to hear. Yes, he was on our first black bear hunting episode.
Happy belated birthday Randy! Thank you guys for another awsome episode.
Thank you and thanks for watching.
Montana double date😂😂😂 cant stop laughing. Good 1 Bart. Thanks for sharing this hunt.
Nice to see you out in the snow! Shot a mule in Utah myself, was a bit warm for me... (I live at 67 North)
Awesome you made the trip to USA. I have been watching and following your channel since episode 10. Glad you're still putting great content and tips to us rookie shooters. Was it a nice deer
Damn, cool buck and tredging though all that snow...you're a beast !
Fred, you ain’t looking good. Ha, ha.
Randy... You owe no one an apology. This is a fantastic video!! "Montana double date" absolutely hilarious!!! LMAO!!! 😂
Thank you.
You're absolutely right
Randy, I recently watched your video about one of your worst pack-outs because of the terrain & your comment to the effect of I'll never shoot an animal in a location like that agin!
It was 2 days after your 52nd birthday. I had a thought about getting your meat out w/o packing it on foot. If you had some balloons that would lift a few hundred pounds and a cylinder of Helium, Would it be possible to lift them up and then just control the rope attached to them? Perhaps it is too troublesome to take a helium cylinder along in your Voyager but I thought it could be a neat idea but then it maybe its totally impractical. BJ
Randy, your smile @ 13:17 summarises what is hunting trips all about. Not everyone can live and appreciate that moment and its feelings (happiness) except passionated hunters.
Keep up the good work.
Greets from Libya
Thank you.
"Found a mule deer buck that suited me fine!"
Beautiful buck, I love the way you don’t get crazy and start hooting and hollering like some people do. Lots of respect for the deer and your humility is classy. Thanks from a Navajo Hunter. The way we skin and gut a deer is different from the way you guys do it. But that buck looks fat. Mmmmmm
Randy I will be 53 in June of 2020. I can sure tell it also. You get up them mountains good for your age. I never been but your videos make me want to go. Mostly flat except river bottoms. Super flat compared to what you hunt. Thin air also. I am not sure I wouldn’t pass out.
You get around pretty good for an old guy with a bad liver. Thank you for all the conservation work you do! You are a good example of what all hunters should be.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind comments.
Well Randy you did it again, way to go. As you stated he not that big and maybe on his way down, ether way you look at, he is on his way down from age or off the mountain heading to table.
I show my wife the Montana Double date! she just called me ass##$^%$ walk out for office.
About ten years ago we where hunt in the Checker Board area. We put on rain gear to keep dry from snow. Once we reach a good glass spot my wife decide she what to take a rest and due a little glassing, I informed her to watch her step and not to get to close to edge well she know what to due, as she sat down she lost her footing and slide 100 yards down the side of it, after she stop and informed me she was OK it took me 10 minutes to stop laugh. She was not happy with me for that. Still get a hot about. Only wish I could have recorded.
Wish you best in 2019 and hope you are felling better. Leon from Billings
Nice buck Randy. Hope your doing ok. In the video it looked like you didn't feel well. Thanks for all the hunts you share with us. 🏹
Thanks. I wasn't doing well that day. But, I'm fine now.
I have hunted Deer and Elk for most of my life and never once seen this many Animal in my life?! We have packed in for miles and miles using horses where no other hunters have gone for years and never seen that many Trophy Animals ever. These guys must be scoping these areas with Helicopters or Drones or something ?? Because every episode this guy and his friends see and Kill more trophy Animals than the rest of us hunters all put together! You tell me how that can happen??? I know persistency pays off but come on something isn't transparent and it's being left out??? I was born at night but not last night? 👀
Urbanization now takeing over farmland, Hayfields grain fields replaced by lawns, if you like to have game birds around, grow your own food for them.
you can always tell how experienced guys are a skinning by there cape work.
Randy my friend you suck. ha ha ha ha ha aha !!
Great video looked like tremendous fun. I love the big sky !!
You know what's strange is the fact that there is snow on the ground and the temp must be sonewhere around 15 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit and yet you don't see any breathing streams coming out of there lungs?? Could this be touched up with photoshop or what? LOL
What are we doing, Randy? Are you going to shoot something and chop it up and put it on our backs, Randy? - Llama.
Hey Randy, I'm going to give you 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 10 thumbs up. Great hunt and thanks for sharing this with us.
I got to thinking, your camera man had to have walked many more steps than you or Bart because of all the different angles he shot. KUDOS to you cameraman. You deserve a shout out too.
Very nice Buck. Wishing you well and hopefully you get your health back Randy.
Stan
Yes, Dan has a way harder job than I do. Thanks for watching.
@@Fresh_TracksWell now, I wouldn't say his job is harder, after all, he's probably 10 -15 years younger than you. Not saying you're old, now how do I get out of this predicament? I'm 73, in the video you were saying you were going to be 55 on Monday. Every step you take, I'd have to take 3 or 4 so, you have the advantage over me. Just saying, youth has it's benefits.
I'd better back out of here, this hole is getting deeper.
Thanks again for sharing another great video.
Stan
Why eould you think 30 years of forest growth would be detrimental to mule deer habitat? Harder to see maybe but if there are less demerit is likely other reasons. More hunters using modern optics long range hunting ect?
Randy, you said it. "I'm so lucky to have that chance." That's it in a nutshell. You guys earned it walking up that snow covered mountain.
I am the luckiest man I know.
Great hunt! Congrats. That’s a dang nice buck. And you are right, we are so blessed!✝️
You could have said it any better it's a great country and we are blessed with freedom to hunt . Happy birthday that was a great present you got. Hope you feel better on next hunt Randy take care.
Awesome video, can't wait to get some Caras now that the wife is on board. Thanks to you and Beau for showing everyone more about what they can do.
You will enjoy them greatly.
Randy, I hope you get to feeling better.. That was a an awesome day hunt.. He was neat looking buck, he kinda had a rain deer thing going on the way he curves on his forks..
Randy, you should just buy those llamas off Beau Baty! 😂😂Great video, as always
If I can convince my wife, I will have them as my own....assuming Beau would part with them.
Sometimes one day hunts are bittersweet, sometimes you just have other stuff to do and it works out. I shot a bedded buck this year. He was flopping in the tall grass after the shot. I went back to my pack and radioed my buddy who was watching from across the drainage, He's down I said. My buddy's response was "No he's not!!!" I ran back and put another one in him. Lesson learned. Never take your eyes off a buck that's still moving if possible.
In what state, Reed? Not legal to use radios or phones to assist in the hunt in many states.
Eric Rush is that a northern state thing?
@@jonathonlang1844 Regs vary from state to state and change often. Many hunters consider it a "fair chase" thing regardless of legality. Using electronic communication to assist in taking of game disqualifies entry in Pope & Young records for example.
"There is currently no prohibition on using two-way radios to hunt in Washington. However, if radios are used for location of or herding of game, there may be a question of ethics involved.
It is illegal to use radio-telemetry equipment to locate and hunt wildlife with transmitters attached to them."
I knew approximately where the deer was. I will admit my partner told me where to begin my stalk via radio. I turned the radio off and left it at my pack while I belly crawled through the grass to make the shot at 165 yards. Certainly a grey area. Hand signals would have worked too. The first shot was fatal and I would have soon discovered the deer got up but he would not have gotten too far.
Love the Llamas, they are so patient and calm... adorable pair ! Oh and by the way, 54 is NOT old !! haha
That they are. Glad to hear I'm not over the hill yet.
mile marker 54 !!?? and I was prepping myself for being called 'uncle' by you Randy ! Now I feel better thank you ever so much...………even if its by one year , ha ! ……………….keep those top notch vids coming sir , heck , with the severe heat & drought here currently , it's refreshing watching snow & crisp footage for a change ! Good hunting , all the best there guys .
Thanks for watching.
Awesome hunt. Couldn’t have asked for a better one. Thanks for another fun video.
Happy belated birthday. Thank you for posting the video!
Randy.. i too am 53.. dont be giving us 50+ers a bad name.. still in our prime, know more about hunting than the young bucks...
I find i just need to pace myself more (old bull, young bull theory) and it takes a bit more effort in the summer for me to get into hunting shape..
From one old timer to another, keep on living the dream.. once i am in a wheelchair and cant walk is when i MAY hang up the rifles and bow.. til then.... game on!!!
Completely agree. Thanks for watching.
That's really great! You guys treat the game with the respect it deserves, unlike some of the other "hunting" youtubers!
Hunting public land is a great System in my view, more countries in the world should do something like that!
Greetings from Germany
Thanks for watching. Glad you like our content style.
I thought it was against TV law to shoot a bedded animal? At least you mentioned that in your elk talk live.
It is for network content, a rule I find rather stupid. Now that we are no longer on the network, I am not subject to their production guidelines and I can show footage as I want and how it happened.
I don't have a problem with it just know you mentioned it before. Thanks for the clarification
Well I like one day hunts😊
A great episode and a well made video.
Greets and like from a subscriber in Norway.
Thanks. And thanks for watching.
There's nothing wrong with a one day hunt. Thanks for sharing.
Love it good hunt good shot I enjoyed the hunt Thanks for sharing
Looked like a quick cool hunt. Congrats again!
Good hunt and a nice buck. Nice work guys.
Great video guy's....congrats randy.
Good job nice 3-point enjoyed watching the stock
Deer in that unit probably suffer from no logging
No, Randy... no AARP left-wing craziness. AMAC is the "more gooder" alternative. Now, on to more "impotent" matters... congrats on a fine buck! It's a pleasure to see you able to snag up a full tag in just a day. And, the boys done good packin' your prize back to the truck for ya too.
Those are some funny points you make. Thanks for watching.
Randy quit worrying about being 54. Your enjoying life too much to worry about that. Besides I’m 65 and in much worse shape, but we gotta keep trying. Great hunting is always fun. Be careful out there. Enjoy the show so much.
I'll try to do that. Thanks for watching.
Totally worth it Randy . Thanks for sharing.
:S Im 25 years old and I've been binge watching all your videos to learn more for my first bow hunt...One thing that has been making me so depressed is age....going up and up so fast in age and can't go back...Everytime you mention your age in video I keep getting sooo depressed......being 16 felt not too long ago...
Heck, being 25, you have 50 more years of great productive life ahead of you. Smile and get after it.
Randy, this past Saturday was the first day of Pennsylvania's doe season. My sister and I both were able to harvest a doe. As I pulled up with my Grandpa's tractor and trailer to pick up her doe, my Dad and sister both looked at me and said, "Where is Marcus the Llama?" Haha. Keep up the great videos, hope to make it out west soon and hunt some Muley's.
That's too funny. I hope you make it out west, soon.
Did yall already do the give away. BULL'S
Great hunt - enjoyable viewing! Don't be concerned with those "mile markers" that are in the rearview mirror. I've got 64 in mine and still hike and climb these Colorado mountains. I have a "like vintage" buddy in Livingston who climbed 20 peaks (gnarly ones) in your neck of the woods last summer. The way you go, I'm sure you have many more mile markers of good travel. Dang, those llamas sure make it easier and more enjoyable I'm sure. I've been telling wifey that they would sure be good backpacking partners - let alone hunting packers. Anyway, enough rambling...thanks for sharin your hunts with us. I like your style...not all that hype and foolishness of so many other hunting shows!
Thanks for watching and thanks for the encouragement. Try those llamas; I think you'll like it.
These guys brought Llamas! and they’re still carrying their packs... I don’t get it...
Lots of stuff you want to have on your person that goes in the pack and you would never leave behind with a tied up llama.
What a short Nd brief hunt Randy always your hunts re spectacular Nd so awesome wether you kills smthing or NT I just like checking them at all times, thy wz a very deep snow Nd looking s beautiful
Thank you. And thanks for watching.
More content? That post shot harvesting Sliding down on the Montana Double Date is the best. More post shot content if anything! Great buck love the antlers missing g4's
We will make note of that.
Loved seeing the lamas...!
Heck yeah nothing wrong with that
Good job again hunting public lands in Montana. I bagged a 3x4 big’n on public lands in eastern MT this fall.
Congrats to you.
Question? Why don’t you wear snow shoes? I am new to this, please forgive my ignorance.
Serious pain to use snowshoes in deep snow with steep inclines.
Beautiful hunt Randy!
Randy reminds me of my Grandpaw so much, his mannerisms and all are identical, sure do miss that old fella, but good hunt guys!
I suspect your Grandpa was a bit more above average than I am. I'm well below the norm. Thanks for watching.
How do grizzlies react to lamas?
Randy you just seemed sad on this hunt. Hope you're feeling alright with a few week's rest.
Wasn't sad. Just worn down and having a bad liver day. Thanks for the concern.
All that you need Randy are self retrieving Lamas.LOL After the shot the Lamas come to you.LOL The one day is was awesome. Mule hunting is fun.
You might be on to something.
What a cool little hunt!
Awesome hunt randy it's always been a dream of mine to hunt Montana. You might have alot of hunts behind you but you also have alot more to go to.
Thanks for the support. Hope you fulfill that Montana dream.
Great hunt, very enjoyable
Great video . Good to see Bart again.
Is there any worry about bear or some predators killing the llamas while you guys go hunting??
I guess there's always a remote possibility, but their owner tells me not to worry about it.
great job boys....thank you
thanks for the great video!
On friday i took out my 82 year old buddy and he shot a spike by 2 wt on the last day of rifle season.. he still has the passion.. slower passion but still has it
That is so cool. I doubt I'll live to age 82, let alone be out hunting like your buddy. Good on you for getting him out there.
Great skinning tips
Randy, how are you liking the new Howa HS Precision rifles?
A LOT!
this is your best episode by far!
Nicely done!
Awesome!! Great buck!
Nice buck Randy
thanks again awesome
Great hunt Randy! As usual, the best informative, and enjoyable hunting videos on UA-cam. Thank you.
Re-watching this has made me realize why I may be struggling finding muleys in the Idaho panhandle, I never thought they would be up in the deeper snow like that. Only allowed to hunt them in mid November and I always assumed that much snow would run them down more.
Awesome vid!
I never heard of loaner llamas before😀.
The one time I stayed in Bozeman to visit a friend I managed to go the wrong way on one of the two one-way streets in downtown. Fortunately, I noticed very quickly and turned into a parking lot before anyone got close. Nice country.
Do you cape all of your harvests? If so why and what does your trophy room look like.
Not all, but when I can and I know it will stay preserved until I get to the taxidermist, I cape it. A good cape is valuable to a taxidermist, so I give them to my friend who is always needing them for people who messed up the cape on their animal.
