Clone Hardware Wallets. Same Seed on Multiple Devices (Trezor, Ledger, Keepkey, Coldcard, SafePal)

  • A short video that looks at what happens when you restore the same seed phrase onto multiple hardware wallets. (Trezor, Ledger, Keepkey, Coldcard, SafePal) A great demo of why it doesn't matter if Ledger, Trezor, etc, go broke and also why it's easy to move to a new hardware wallet by simply importing an existing seed phrase. The videos look at some of the benefits of doing this as well as some of the risks that go along with it...

    ---------------------
    If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
    For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d...
    For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.com/?ref=18111926
    By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
    Don't have a hardware wallet?
    Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
    Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb84...
    (If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)

    I invested in btc in 2011. I had a friend helping me because I had no idea of what to do. He gave me a file in a flash drive back then. Since then, I’ve been trying to learn more and more, but never had the time to sit and watch many videos. When I started last year, I found a bunch of videos with crypto gurus announcing the 250k bitcoin and/or the crash. Also, a lot of paid content to promote exchanges and platforms. I’m happy that I’ve found your channel since it is very informative and your site has a lot of useful information. Thanks.

    Great video! I have a couple of questions- if you’re using a ledger but have 2 btc accounts, segwit and native segwit, is there a way to combine them into just one, how? And if you’re using a ledger and you want to migrate your btc to CC and only keeping altcoins (don’t want to keep any btc in ledger) in ledger, what’s the best way to do this? I’d assume you have to transfer it, which means paying for the transfer fee, but I wonder if there’s a better way.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      In terms of the two accounts, you can't really combine them. You *can* use your Ledger with something like Mycelium which stacks bitcoin accounts of different types together and represents them as a single account. (The accounts will remain separate, but Mycelium will let you take inputs from both when sending)
      In terms of the Ledger and the ColdCard, unless you end up using the same seed on both (which undermines what you are trying to do with keeping BTC off the Ledger) then there is no way around simply sending a transaction from one wallet to the other.

    You are saying I can restore on an Ellipal wallet, using the 24 seeds code I originally got when I set up my Ledger Nano S? And I will have same private keys on both wallet?
    Please confirm.
    Thank you for your vid.

    • @CryptoGuide

      Yes, though the problem is that an ellipal isn't going to work well as it only lets you use a single address for Bitcoin, and one account. An ellipal offers less physical security, so you would be better off taking the nano S out and about with you :)

    I have the same seed on two ledger nano wallets. If one of them was to end up in the wrong hands and the amount of pin code attempts was exceeded and thus reset it factory settings, would this have any affect on the hardware wallet which is still in my possession? Ie would I still be able to access the device with my pin code?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  2 роки тому +7

      Yep, Trezor and Ledger both follow standards well so passphrase will work on both interchangibly. The only exception is things like Ledger not allowing the ^ character in a passphrase and Trezor limiting the length to 50 characters. (Ledger allows 100)

    True, however something important to consider is the type of Bitcoin wallet you are using legacy, segwit1, or segwit2, for example if using legacy Bitcoin and restored on a wallet that only supports segwit2 your funds will show as 0, so it is important to know the type of wallet when restoring on another hardware wallet, for example electrum (coldcard) gives you 3 choices, trezor 2 choices, ledger I believe it is 3 choices, also sometimes it's possible to run into strange problems for example I restored a zion on a trezor and the balance was not correct, maybe Zion had migrated to segwit2 and trezor was on segwit1. The very importing thing to remember as long as you have the seed secure your funds are safe.

    • @CryptoGuide

      Not really. For some reason they support only legacy and native segwit for LTC and legacy and segwit for BTC... The only option with safepal is to bug the development on telegram and to workaround by using accounts on your Ledger that the safepal supports... (Though I don't think ledger live supports native segwit for LTC, though this may have changed recently) If you do want to access the native segwit on the Ledger, you will need to use Electrum-LTC and create a native segwit account...

    Does it make any sense to have more than one of the same kind of hardware wallet, and keep the wallets in different locations? And if so, how exactly would the recovery seed be cloned onto the other wallets? Or am I thinking about this all wrong, i.e. I can input the recovery seed via the second or third hardware wallet(s) to gain access to the crypto from wherever the other wallets are located? In other words, I just keep the wallets wherever I want, and there is no cloning of the recovery seed onto the other wallets until the time comes to get access to the crypto from that wallet?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  2 роки тому +2

      Having multiple wallets of the same model/vendor can be good to have a hot-spare. Basically you would just set up the first hardware wallet as normal. For the second one, you would select that you want to restore the recovery seed (as opposed to generate a new seed) and then you would have two hardware wallets with the same private keys. You could also leave unititialised devices that are just spares where you only restore the seed on to them when you propose to use them. The advantage of having some hot-spares is that hardware wallets generally have good protection against physical attacks (like a Ledger) so they are secured by a PIN.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Рік тому

      What does this even mean? When you have the same private keys on two devices, they access the same wallets and addresses. (It's functionally the same device)
      You *can* set up a multisig wallet where all of the signers are derived from the same seed, just on different derivation paths. You can also do it where signers share the same seed, but have different BIP39 passphrases. You can also use something like BIP85 to derive multiple seeds from a single root seed and make multisig with that.
      The real question is what are you hoping to achieve through using Multisig?

    I’m late to the game, found your channel and appreciate your knowledge. I have a question that hopefully you can address please.
    On bitbox02 and possibly others the pass phrase is not stored. I presume this cloning advice will also work for wallets with a passphrase? You also made a video where you used the same 24 word seed concurrently on multiple wallets. I presume this would also work with a 24 word seed plus the same passphrase concurrently on multiple wallets?
    The reason I’m asking is that I’m trying to understand or at least confirm that the seed plus passphrase combination will always generate the same private and public keys regardless of wallet brand/type. Are there any gotchas to this assumption that would make moving funds from one walket to another? I know it’s not the funds being moved but the term wallet seems to be used loosely for multiple definitions (hardware,,seed, keys etc).
    The reason for my concern is that I want to be sure before I commit funds into a specific “wallet” I can later move them without loss.
    Thank you

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      The same process works fine for a BIP39 passphrase too. The only catch is that there are some vendor specific limitations around what you can use, for example Ledger devices don't let you use the ^ character, while Trezor devices limit you to 50 characters.

    • @jayantjoshi6189
      @jayantjoshi6189 3 роки тому

      @@CryptoGuide thanks for such a prompt reply! Yes, good point that I should ensure that I use a passphrase that meets the lowest common denominator requirements of all vendors to be safe.
      However, maybe I didn’t ask my main question clearly, so please let me try again.
      I understand the 24 seed words are just generated via a known algorithm defined by BIP39 from the entropy generated during setup also known as the master key. Therefore, if a known algorithm can function in one direction then it can function in the opposite direction to find the master key from the 24 words during recovery.
      My question is, how does a passphrase get applied in both the forward and reverse directions such that you generate a different master key during setup and get back the same master key during a recovery? Is it also another BIP39 defined known algorithm?
      Thank you.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      The BIP39 passphrase is simply part of BIP39. Your hardware wallet basically store the seed words and then the passphrase is used as part of the "salt" for the hashing function that is used to derive the keys each time you unlock the device. (This is why your hardware wallet will pause for a few seconds as part of the unlock/startup, as this hashing happens every time)
      This might be a bit on the technical side, but it is explained here: github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0039.mediawiki#From_mnemonic_to_seed

    Are all seed phrases compatible on all cold wallets?? Like for example could I recover a 12 word seed phrase on a ledger nano that usually uses 24 words?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому +1

      Compatibility isn't universal, as there are some wallets (BCVault) that don't follow BIP39 standards at all and others that don't always support the same account types (eg: Bitbox02 doesn't support legacy Bitcoin accounts), things like a SecuX W20 doesn't support native segwit, etc... If you stick with Ledger/Trezor then everything will pretty much work...

    Crypto guide I’m so glad I found your channel.
    Question: please reply I never get replies
    I have a Trezor and hold Ada on on of the Ada web pages. My Trezor needs a firmware update but I’m worried I will lose my Ada if firmware update fails.
    Is it wise to take the Ada from the eg Ada lite or yoroi to an Exchange - carry out firmware update on Trezor t , then when it works move it back to eg your Ada lite or yoroi?
    I’m scared to update firmware on Trezor t. Regards Jason

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  2 роки тому

      If you have a working seed backup for the Trezor then there is nothing to worry about, as you can always flash it to a replacement device if something goes wrong with the update. (Or alternatively, use the seed in a software wallet to recover the funds without a Trezor)
      If you haven't done one, just do the dry-run recovery to verify that your backup is 100% correct.

    newbie here: if I clone a trezor- to another trezor - can i still access the "hidden" wallets with pass phrases with no issue? same questions for trezor to ledger- I am reading that ledger does not have pass phrase "hidden" wallets" is this accurate ? also 1 more: trezor to exodus? how would a user who clones trezor to exodus. Access the "hidden wallets". thank you I really appreciate your videos

    • @CryptoGuide

      BIP39 passphrase is not vendor specific and will work fine across Trezor -> Ledger, etc. (This is what is being referred to when people talk about hidden wallets, 25th word, etc)
      The main limitation with this is that there are some vendor specific limitations about what you can use in a passphrase. For example, Trezor will only let you have 50 characters, compared to Ledger allowing 100. Ledger also don't allow the ^ character.
      If you have a Trezor, you can use it directly with Exodus, you don't need to go importing your seed anywhere. (And you shouldn't go importing the seed from a hardware wallet into a software wallet anyway)

      Ledger is different in that you enter the passphrase on-device, I cover how here: ua-cam.com/video/UfqJI3pt36s/v-deo.html
      Basically each passphrase that you used for your Trezor can be used with the Ledger, either entered in a temporary manner or assigned to a second pin. Ledger Live works differently to Trezor in that it's actually a watch-only wallet, so you can see the balances of all the different passphrase wallets at the same time. (This can actually get folk into trouble as I cover here: ua-cam.com/video/cWBbMQWtSvU/v-deo.html)

    • @CryptoGuide

      Great question. :) If you generated a new seed when you initialized the device, no. The typical scam that happens for this sort of thing is that a scammy vendor will include a card with a 24 word seed that they tell you to use, or ship the device pre-initialized. Setting a strong BIP39 passphrase would actually even protect you in the instance where some scammer provided the seed.
      But yea, the key thing is that the device is generating the seed. It should generate a completely new seed every time you reinitialise it. (So if you set it up and then wipe it before sending any funds, it should give you a completely new seed the 2nd time around... If it spits out the same seed twice then you have a device that has been sabotaged. (Though this sort of attack doesn't appear to have occurred in the wild)

They both use the same recovery seed and my Trezor is able to detect the same Bitcoin address as on my Ledger so that works. However, I cannot do the same for Ethereum. Ledger Live and Trezor Suite use different derivation paths for Eth. If you go in to the account settings -> advanced logs for the eth account in Ledger Live then you can find what it is and then use you Trezor with something like MyEtherWallet and customise the derivation path...
      Alternatively, Ledget Live will happily find and use the derivation path that Trezor uses, so if you send a small amount of Eth to the Trezor default Eth address, then run the "add account" workflow for Eth in Ledger Live, it will find the account the Trezor is using.

    Great Video!
    I have ETH/BTC/ADA , I have an Exodus desktop client wallet which hold those coins PKs. I'll transfer my coins from Exodus to my ModelT Trezor (when I get one). Can anyone now who has access to my desktop exodus client (which has a password to access the client) transfer my coins out?
    IE they don't need my Trezor?
    I am doing some estate planning and am writing down instructions on how my family could access my coins.
    I am wondering if I need to tell them to attach the trezor or not.
    I would also give them access to the seed, but want to make it easy for them.
    BTW, Exodus is installed on a laptop which is packed away in a cupboard and is never accessed unless coins need to be managed.
    What would be the benefit of my getting a TrezorT and xferring my coins PKs to it, as opposed to leaving them as-is - in Exodus?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  3 роки тому

      Once you move the funds on to the Trezor then someone will need either the Trezor, or your seed phrase restored in to some other hardware/software BIP39/44 wallet (Ledger, Trezor, etc), to access your funds.
      Your best bet is to generate a new seed on the Trezor and then transfer the funds from Exodus to the Trezor. (You can even use a Trezor with Exodus if you prefer that interface over Trezor suite)

    • @ronatola
      @ronatola 3 роки тому

      So In order to xfer anything that is stored on the Trezor, (after I moved all the coin PKs to it from Exodus) it would require that it be physically attached to Exodus (which has been previously paired with it) to transfer anything out from the Trezor?

    Its best OPSEC to NEVER use the same seed phrase on different devices. When moving to a NEW hardware wallet, its better to use a NEW seed phrase there. Then you send a TEST AMOUNT to that NEW device to see if it gets there securely and to see that it doesnt get stolen. If it doesnt get stolen, send the rest to that entirely new wallet.
    Always send test amounts to new wallets before storing all your savings on it.

    • @CryptoGuide

      Depends on what you are trying to achieve, but it it certainly worth being clear that each additional device that the seed is on increases the potential attack surface to include that device.

      There are plenty of situations where folk may want to have a hot-spare backup hardware device, or want to continue to use a seed over a number of years even after the original hardware failed, or even want to upgrade to a newer model due to some new features (eg: A Coldcard Mk4 user might want a Q for QR stuff).
      It's far lower risk to use a hardware wallet for this than something like using multiple hot-wallets with the same seed...
