Like any backup process, it's worth making sure that it actually works from time to time. Fortunately, most major hardware wallet manufacturers provide a mechanism for you to safely verify that your seed phrase (BIP39 mnemonic, recovery sentence, etc) in a secure and non-destructive way.
This can be easily done on a Ledger, Trezor, Keepkey or Coldcard.
---------------------
If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d...
For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.com/?ref=18111926
By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
Don't have a hardware wallet?
Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb84...
(If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)

How do I check mine without typing it into my laptop ? Just I'm case there is a key logger on my laptop.
You’re so helpful! Maybe you don’t even know how helpful you are! VERY HELPFUL! Thank you
Glad it helped, feel free to shoot me a tip at any of the addresses here www.reddit.com/r/u_Crypto-Guide/comments/czy13u/a_post_or_video_of_mine_was_helpful_feel_free_to/
Dude, you are the best, MUCH needed!
Actually, great and unique and USEFUL content. Over time your channel with become HUGE as you are the only one focusing on these SUPER IMPORTANT aspects of crypto.
Keep up the good work man!
And thank you VERY MUCH!
Glad it helps, certainly trying to fill the gaps that no-one else seems to cover well.
Just checked mine, it matches. Awesome video mate, you have just gained new subscriber.
Thanks and good job taking the time to check :)
Great tutorial mate!
Glad you found it useful :)
love your videos thanks a bunch.
Happy to help :
Awesome thank you ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Glad it helped :)
How would you travel between countries with your seed phrase? Where would you have your seed stored (if not memorized)?
Would you take your hardware wallet with you? If so, could it be confiscated by customs?
Firstly, I have crossed international borders with hardware wallets, seed plates, and never had an issue. I just took them on carry-on. A hardware wallet just looks like a usb stick or phone. Secondly, I would suggest protecting the seed phrase with a BIP39 passphrase, so that even if someone has it, they can't do anything with it. (Let alone know that something else exists)
If you are really worried then you could just store the seed written on laminated card in with other materials that you carry on your person. (And store a passphrase digitally or on paper) You could leave the hardware wallets wiped and remove any apps on your phone and reconstitute it all on the other end.
If you are really, really worried then you could use multisig. I would strongly recommend against relying on memorising anything as your only backup.
I need help w Trezor saying my pin is incorrect many times. It’s definitely correct. I bought a new Trezor and want to know if I can use original seed from the one not working on the new trezor. Thx. John
Yep, once you restore your seed it will work fine and an your funds will be there.
Hi Steve is there a video for what to do if recovery check registers invalid?
What type of hardware wallet do you have? (Using a passphrase will make a Ledger day it doesn't match) Basically if you don't have a working backup then your best bet is to move the funds of the device.
One way to test the seed can be to initialize a new device introducing my seed? I have a KeepKey.
Do you mean with a second device? (If so, yes this will work) Unfortunately seed verification on keepkey is a pain now that shapeshift have discontinued the chrome app, the only way to do it at the moment is via the command line.
Thank you for this video. I am trying to resolve this problem. When I send crypto from my exchange to the Nano X, i get this error message to retry because my passphrase needs to be checked for error. Can you help me to rectify this? I have reset my passphrase. I have double-checked my passphrase and can't seem to find the reason I'm getting this error message. In addition to this, I'm able to send from an exchange and receive. My logic tells me that my passphrase is correct even though my ledger live says it is not. in order for me to send and receive I have to say. that i don't have my mobile device with me and then have to copy the receiving address manually and copy that address to the exchange.
So are you saying that it tells you that your seed or passphrase doesn't match the account that you are trying to send from?
I am a bit concerned about exposing my seed in nano..Should this be done in airgapped environment?
If you do it on the nano itself using ledgers app, it is fine. You can do it running your Ledger off a battery pack or phone charger even. If you are using Tails Linux, without using your Ledger, then you certainty need to be air gapped.
I agree that's why I purchased the Ellipal cold wallet it's airgapped.
.
It’s too bad they don’t have a way to verify your passphrase on Ledger or Trezor. The passphrase is where people can really screw up because they have to type every single character and the user can use words that aren’t from the bip39 word list and non-standard characters. The only thing I can think of would be to write down one of the addresses associated with that passphrase + seed. Then you can confirm whether you’re able to sign a message from that address before erasing the device. Anyone have any better ideas?
The main way to verify it on both Ledger and Trezor is to enter your passphrase and check that you are seeing the same addresses with something like Ledger Live or Trezor Wallet. You don't need to actually sign stuff, if the XPUB keys (that the wallets use) are the same then the passphrase is correct. (If you create an account in Electrum via your HW wallet and select to "Encrypt Wallet" you won't even be able to open it unless you have the same seed+passphrase that you used to create it)
When confirming your seed phrase on a trezor or ledger nano are you not doing so on your computer?
No, both have special apps/processes that let you do it on the device itself.
Ledger makes you verify seed phrase when setting up for first time correct? Should you reverify another way?
Ledger fully verifies the whole seed as part of the initial setup. Other devices like Trezor do not.
@@CryptoGuide ty for clarifying that. I was sure I did part of setting up but hearing a few people talking about it made me a little paranoid
Yea a few years ago the ledger didn't verify it, but now it does.
Basically I would also suggest doing the recovery check any time you transcribe a new copy of the seed.
@@CryptoGuide what do you mean by transcribe a new copy?
Let's say you originally backed it up on the card that came with it but later purchased a steel seed backup product. (Or made an additional card copy)
How do you find manager on ledger live app on android phone?
It's under "My Ledger"
First of all click like and then I watch the video..
Thanks. One note for this video was that you asked about Safepal before Christmas. I have been playing around with it for a month and as it stands, you can't do a seed verification with it, but the firmware update that came out yesterday added bip39 passphrase, with its workflow including the ability to do a one time seed verification when enabling passphrase for the first time... I pestered the Safepal folk on telegram for the last two days and apparently the ability to verify is on the roadmap now. (Which is relatively straight forward to make it work is already there) :) So yea, it's missing some features but certainly moving in the right direction as it matures. Will have a review vid in a the next few weeks.
@@CryptoGuide Hi, thanks for your update... I purchased safepal but havent updated firmware yet... Waiting for your precious tutorials on that....
.
Help me keepkey. My found zeros eth en wallet keepkey. Fue actualizada. Tengo la semilla. No veo los fondos
So do you still have the Keepkey? The new firmware prompts for a BIP39 passphraseby default, have you tried just leaving that blank?

👍
Is there any danger in checking your seed phrase on Trezor even if you type it on the Trezor itself? I’m worried that something will intercept or record me typing the seed phrase in.
Thank you
Unless you do it infront of a security camera, doing it on-device is fine. (And designed to be safe)
Thank you!
Stay safe :)
I bought an Ellipal and trying to figure it all out.
I restored the Ellipal with a seed mnemonics from my Exodus phone app wallet.
Only my ETH showed up. DOT, ADA, XRP didn’t.
I transfered a couple ADA to Ellipal , then out to the Exodus (expecting an error because they had the same 12 word seed)That worked???
I thought any BIP39 wallet with the seed phrases were all essentially the same wallet?
If you have a decent wallet that follows standards like a Trezor or Ledger this is true, but not for things like the Ellipal.
@@CryptoGuide so I need to throw away the Ellipal?
It was expensive and I really like the way it works. But if it’s not standard or safe I’ll pitch it.
If you want to use the Ellipal then your best bet is to just create a new seed for that device only and then move all the funds to it manually. Simply re-using the seed from a software wallet totally undermines a large part of the security that any hardware wallet gives you in the first place.
@@CryptoGuide I understand and agree. The app wallet didn’t have much in it. It was a test, not really to transfer coins to the hardware wallet.
Here was my original issue and why I did that: I created an account on the Ellipal, put a couple ADA in it. I created a 2nd account with the same seed but added a pass phrase. It would delete and over ride the original account. The account WITH the pass phrase would have the coins that I put in the account WITHOUT the pass phrase.
So obviously the Ellipal is a bad device? Or is that what you would have expected to happen?
When you add a BIP39 passphrase it is functionally the same as using a different seed, though most decent wallets allow you to switch back and forward between different passphrases. I haven't purchased an Ellipal to have a look at, though there have been a number of issues with them over the years that have made it so that I'm not exactly motivated to spend the money to have a closer look...
I updated Ledger couple years ago, and after the update, it wouldn't work. I was forced to do a recovery. First one failed, which put me in panic mode! Second was successful, but it left such a bad taste in my mouth that I never update any of my hardware wallets anymore....
This is a bad approach, if you have a working seed backup you have nothing to worry about and should keep up with the firmware updates.
My cold card wallet tested me after i wrote the seed down
Yep, the Cold Card is good and checks the entire seeds. Some wallets like the Keepkey & Safepal don't ever check it and others like the Trezor T only check a small fraction of the total words :)
Heloo sir i recover my funds in trust wallet and say need verification and need 300$ says like this is it real ??
No, sounds like a scam
Can you help me to recover my seed phrase from my address 12 words missing
If you have lost all of the seed words and no longer have a working wallet (or even a copy of the wallet data from when it worked) then you have caused a unrecoverable loss.
You can't derive private keys from an address and anyone who tells you otherwise is a scammer.
I have the private key and wallet address. I
So if you have your private key, what's the actual problem?
Seerecovery require at least 4 words of the seed phrase which I dont have. I am unable to recover my trust wallet.
@@anouarlamloumi3479 how many of the seed words do you have?
man your videos are not complete you don't go through steps and you talk general this info we can get from any video
There are separate videos that walk through the process for Nano S, Nano X, Trezor One and Trezor T. The video would be too long to put them all together.
Can you update this video? I have a Trezor and none of what you stated applies any longer. When I click on the Trezor icon it takes me to Wallet. No "advanced settings" here or in the settings. Thanks
Just follow the "Reset, Recover, Verify" video of mine for your specific Trezor model.
