    Wow just read all the comments & how nice that Tony was so well appreciated. I never knew he died in the 90's so that was a shock to read & I feel really sad as he had exciting plans for his future. I'm the short cop on the left behind him as we made our entrance through the avenue of trees. He was smashing to work with for nearly 5 months (I think) at Shepperton & wish I'd gone to New York before he died to visit him. Yours Frankie Cull

    You have to give the Sergeant credit. Even though he's scared shitless, he's still going to do his job come hell or high water. His subordinates are the real chickens here, and seeing him trying to keep them from running away never fails to make me laugh.
    I also have to give props to the arrangement of the song. The original version is too slow-paced to ever work on film. The faster tempo of this version makes for a much more exciting, joyous scene.

      @paid4infull 10 років тому +13

      I too saw the original and enjoy this one much more also. I think my favorite part of the entire production is when the General says to the sergeant, when they're procrastinating about going off to fight the pirates, "but you're still here!" and the sergeant does that little "Slinky" move behind the troop to move them along...that just really cracks me up no matter how many times I see it. :)

      Sergeant is Luigi. I mean, go play Luigi's Mansion. There is no doubt Luigi was scared during that game, just like the Sergeant here. But Luigi still went on and saved his brother, much like the Sergeant's resolve to do his job.

    • @timselman1123
      @timselman1123 9 років тому +6

      Maybe other people do it slow, however on the score, the tempo is marked as "Allegro marziale", rather than a metronome mark, so that leaves a large scope for interpretation of tempo! I am MD'ing this show in about 5 weeks, and I always take it about this fast!

    Who can ever shake that "Tarantara" out of their head once hearing it? Ha! This was my favorite part of the Pirates of Penzance, Tony Azito and the other officers. Tony Azito was amazing, so flexible yet in perfect time w/the others. It has to be watched numerous times to fully enjoy it: seeing Tony's flexible joints and how he could move them, watching the faces of the other officers, their knee-knocking fear.....just hysterical! BRAVO! Tony would've gone far had he lived.Thank you for posting this. Always brings a smile to my face to watch it. And as already stated, George Rose was always incredible no matter what role he was in.

      I was a lowly pirate in a school production of "Pirates" - we watched this production for inspiration. Tony Azito is a hero of mine, great performance, in this and in "a Policeman's lot is not a happy one". It's like he's made of rubber :-)
      RIP Tony and George

    • @paid4infull
      @paid4infull 10 років тому +3

      john wilson Hope you enjoyed the role; I would think it was fun, regardless of your role. I read an article quoting Tony Azito as saying everyone would tell him he must've been given free reign but he said this was choreographed to the letter; that there wasn't enough room to NOT have every single step choreographed through the entire production. He was marvelous. I hate to say it but I didn't know who the "keystone cops" were before this; had to Google them...ha ha! And I'm a senior! :) Tony really brought them back to life and added even more character to them. Excellent. Embarrassed to admit how many times I've watched this entire production...and still do! :)

    • @Susan10093
      @Susan10093 10 років тому +9

      Well she did have lots of practice in those years of doing rock concerts, belting out songs like "Heat Wave" and "You're No Good" among others! I think Linda Ronstadt felt more comfortable doing her part in this song, then in the coloratura aria "Poor Wandering One", which in my opinion she still sang quite well.

    Pirates of Penzance changed my life. It was my first musical (string bass in the pit orchestra) and it was the greatest bonding experience of high school. Outside of concerts and recitals, it was also the first time I ever performed for an audience. Years later, I met my wife playing a pirate RPG at a convention that I wouldn't have been in except for this. Great music, great dancing, Linda Ronstadt and Tony Azito (and Kevin Kline and Angela Lansbury) all having a blast.

    I read that many people believed that Tony Azito would never be able to dance correctly because his hight would make him un-graceful, but if you watch his leap at 1:33 , and take away the goofy Keystone cop outfit and replace it with what he actually looks like, it's a very beutiful, graceful, well executed, ballet-style jump. Abolutly gorgeous, when you think about it. :) Rest In Peace, Tony.

    Couldn't care less about Gilbert and Sullivan until Ronstadt's voice brought my young rock and roll self to Central Park in New York City to see this show. On a hot summer night - just wowed. No star turn for Linda, just part of a great ensemble, she was a charmer and a long way from the stadiums she had been playing. Other versions seem stiff and stuffy. This was joyous.

    My wife and I watched this movie for the first time in several years, and both of us came to the conclusion that Tony Azito must not have had any bones at all. It should not be possible for human limbs to move like that. The other policemen were great too, but in order to really notice them it's necessary to go back and watch the scene again. He absolutely steals the scene.
