  • Quartz countertops were not the first to mimic natural stone, trying to emulate the look with a solid non-porous surface. That goes to solid surface countertops- the first being Corian by Dupont. Although solid surface countertops have been around for nearly 50 years, they can still be a great choice for your next kitchen renovation.

I had Black (with speckles) Aconite in a home for 14 years and loved it. It did scratch some, but that never bothered me. I’d actually consider it again now -- if I don’t opt for high maintenance marble, which is what I truly want in my next home.

We just had solid surface installed yesterday. Wilsonart and we couldn't be happier. I think a lot of times caveats that are meant as simply a disclaimer about what might happen get taken too seriously and people over-react. We did our homework. Actual owners love solid surface.

You missed the biggest plus for me - seamless look in U shaped kitchen counters and ability to have a seamless attached sink. On the last part of the video about imbedded electric, about a year ago I saw something on another Canadian UA-cam channel that actually had an electric stovetop installed UNDER a countertop. Don’t remember the channel or if the stovetop was induction or not or the thinner countertop type that was over it, but though it was really cool!

The house was remodeled 40+ years ago and went with solid surface with the sink built in in the bathroom that has a white marble-like pattern. That works perfectly when doing small babies and kids hair. The sink is part of the countertop and you can simply sweep the water back into the sink. There are not seams to clean. It just stays clean. Solid surface is normally matte, so I don't see scratches even if there are any. If there were, you could wet sand and buff them out.
The tub and kitchen sink are Kohler cast iron. The do not chip but over the years the bottoms get dull and they slowly become more difficult to keep nice. The kitchen sink is a rim-type so you can easily sweep water and everything else into the sink as well. The countertop is Formica that is textured. It looks pretty good but I regret the leather pattern as it makes it difficult to write on. After 40+ years and 6 people the top printing on the almond leather pattern has worn off on the top to where it is white, and we've used it as a chopping board plenty of times. Other people don't notice it but when you compare it to the backsplash out of the same material you can see it if you look for it. The kitchen takes more abuse than the bathroom of course but if the Corian doesn't stain, I'm not sure scratches matter, and a built-in sink and infinitely repairable surface might actually work pretty good in a kitchen and actually beat any stainless or composite sink for maintenance and maintaining its looks. If you wanted a gloss surface scratches would show but you normally don't do that with Corian and Laminate, only Granite, Quartzite, and Quartz.

I'm seriously looking at solid surface. Biggest problem in my area (Charlotte, NC), is that folks, which includes the companies I've gotten estimates from for redoing my kitchen, act like there is nothing else besides granite or quartz. I had actually forgotten about solid surface until one of the folks in Home Depot mentioned it. In my area, the only folks that seem to carry it are Lowe's and Home Depot. And between those two, Home Depot is the only ones that are saying consider this. Lowe's is like why would you get this, granite is so much better.

I find a lot of fabricators have become blind to anything but granite, marble, or quartz. I think it comes down to familiarity of working with those surfaces so often, that they don't actually want to work with anything else. It's not that it wouldn't be right for you, its that it isn't right for THEM. Run from these places as you probably don't want them installing anything for you if they aren't willing to listen and have a conversation. You could try looking for a laminate based installer, they may also carry solid surface.

@@hsdesignstudio I'm ending up going with quartz. Reason being is that I least for the ones/ look I was interested in, the solid surface was more dollars than the quartz.

After my research we’ve decided to get Corian because it doesn’t emit radon or radiation and some of the new designs are beautiful.

I installed a Corian countertop in 2003. I really liked it. I would consider doing so again, but the "green" factor gives me pause. Thank you for this series of videos. Looking forward to seeing what else is on your channel.

I have solid counter surfaces in my bathrooms. They're made by LG and are very similar to marble in appearance. And the integrated sink makes for easy cleaning. I'm considering them for my kitchen, but I'll probably end up with quartz as it's a bit harder and more heat and scratch resistant.

They have their downsides, but as a more budget friendly material, its hard to beat.

Great video Jeff! I sold a lot of solid surface back in the day. The fabricator would template it using brown paper and tape it all together. ha. It always turned out great though.

Thanks Mark. My guys used to use corrugated plastic cut into strips and hot glue them into one giant shape. A little different from the digital templating nowadays!

What about Roth and Allen brand? Same as the others?
