The Auto Salvage Yard Experience

  • An Auto Salvage yard is a great place to find affordable used car parts to replace on your own vehicle instead of buying new, or low quality aftermarket parts. Watch as we visit a local auto salvage yard to try and find some Toyota 4Runner parts.
    Other than tools, here's some other things you should bring:
    1) Tarp to lay on - so you aren't laying in motor oil, coolant, etc.
    2) Knee pads or foam pad to kneel on
    *VERY IMPORTANT NOTE*
    There are people trolling the isles and I'm sure there's a high chance your tools could be stolen if you're not paying attention. Either come with a friend to help keep an eye on things or keep your tools very close to you at all times. While we were there, several sketchy looking dudes walked buy not carrying any tools and just looked like they were casing our work area for stuff to steal. It would suck to lose an expensive tool like a cordless impact gun because you're busy pulling parts off a vehicle and weren't paying attention to someone strolling by and helping themselves to your equipment. Like I said several times in the video, Watch Your Shit!

    It can be a daunting task removing parts at a salvage yard. There are a bunch of sketchy characters walking around... Makes you feel like your in Tattoone in Star Wars. I usually don't let others borrow any tools, because you may not get them back! I usually keep tools by my side! Lot of good parts in this 4Runner! Thank you Tim & Sean!

      Yep, no shortage of people there that don't look all that trustworthy, but as we know, looks can be deceiving. For me, it was more the vibe I got from some of them. I just felt like they were scoping out or work area and didn't seem to have any purpose as they were strolling by taking a good long look at what we were doing. I guess you can say it was just my 6th sense kicking in. Thanks for the comment.

      You have to have a serious ball bag to steal somebody's tailgate right in the parking lot. I suppose they post a lookout and then have to rely that other customers won't find it strange somebody is removing a tailgate in the parking lot. I really despise thieves.

      Glad you like it Tom. I try to be as organized as possible with my tools. I was actually at this PicknPull recently and I had the same damn experience. Guys cruised by where we were pulling parts off a 3rd Gen 4runner and they just didn't seem to have a purpose other than watching what we were doing. They weren't carrying any tools and just seemed to meander with no purpose. There is no doubt in my mind that there's guys that show up at these PicknPulls just to be opportunists and steal expensive tools from people when their backs are turned. I kept my tools close and I made sure the sketchy dudes cruising by could see I was watching them.

    Trunk liners and rear seat cushions from big sedans are great to lay on. Floor mats are nice to put your tools on when you are on the ground. A Magnetic tray works well for when youre not on the ground or for smaller tools.
    Bring a few packs of individually wrapped baby wipes or hand cleaner cloths in a ziploc bag, safety glasses, pocket full of paper towels, bottle of water, baggies for fasteners, steel toe boots, snug fitting beanie/cap etc.
    Also - ALWAYS put your tools back in their cases as soon as youre done using them.
    Avoid leaving a bunch of tools in/on the vehicle that you dont need for the job youre doing, you will forget one of them eventually.
    I lost a 13mm gear wrench one time, I still kick myself for losing that.
    Stay gold.

    Finding 3Gens @ pick-N-Pull in Virginia Beach is very rare.
    I got pick-n-pull lucky couple months ago came across 97 that listed day before pretty much untouched.
    To my surprise perfect condition cloth front seats were within.
    Needless to say I pulled them fast! , put faux leather covers on them & installed in my 96 ltd.
    Went back next day pulled great condition interior carpet..
    Sprayed with degreaser , rinsed with lawn hose , extracted water with shop vac.
    End result was like new carpet.
    Total amount spent @ salvage - 80.00.
    IGGEE faux leather seat covers purchased from Amazon 150.00
    Money well spent bringing my 96 interior back to life

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 роки тому

      Yeah, sometimes you really score at the PicknPulls and find a fairly untouched rig. Even when we get notified that a 3rd Gen has arrived at our local yards and we get there quick, we find key things like the engine, trans and rear diff are already pulled. I have a feeling employees and other people that are friends with the people who work there or that grease the palms of the people that work there get advanced notice when a desirable rig arrives and they rape it first of the desirable components before the average Joe gets a chance at it.

    Nice video. This one is much nicer than the one in Fresno, CA. It does seem smaller though :). I stalk the inventory online before I go and there's usually 1 per month that come in here :(. We just got gravel here so it's hard to wheel anything. I usually take my hand truck with me and much LESS tools.
    I typically just bring the common sizes for the 4runnner, 8,10,12,14,17,19,21,24 shallow/deep socket. My gear wrenches (8-19mm), some cutters (for cotter pins and cutting lines quickly), pliers, 1 breaker bar (for hard to reach areas), 1 impact gun like yours, and 1 3/8" ratchet with 1/2" converter. If I know what I'm getting, I'll just bring the appropriate sizes for the job. Hauling all those tools is crazy! I also keep some extra tools in my car JUST in case I forgot / need something specific, like a torx set (I make sure the thieves don't see these).
    Some nice things I found you can do at the yard:
    Work on your car without working on your car. The knowledge you gain here is invaluable for new 3rd gen owners. You can tear it up here if you're curious how something is put together/how to take something apart.
    Tundra 13WL Calipers (if you can find one).
    Spare bolts/nuts you may be missing on your car or may be rusted on your car
    Skid Plates
    Strut top plate (for upgrading to bilsteins). This makes it so you can just set it all up and plug and play without needing to use your existing one!
    Fuses! Those darn toyota fuses are PRICEY! You can pay a few bucks here.
    E-Lockers, if you're lucky!
    Many other things!

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому +3

      Yeah, as you could tell, we're not seasoned salvage yard pickers. I saw lots of seasoned looking dudes with their hand trucks with there tools strapped on. But, we had been to this location before and knew the carts they had available made it fairly easy to carry in a bunch of tools. What I wanted to avoid is finding out after driving there and walking 19 rows into the yard that I didn't have a tool I needed so I basically brought everything but the kitchen sink. Plus, I made Sean push the cart so it was pretty easy for me :-).
      Thanks for the tips though. I particularly like that idea of grabbing some spare strut top plates so you don't have to compress the old springs to get the top plates for the new strut assembly.

      I can't remember how my buddy Sean knew this, but supposedly the truck came from Arizona so no road salting there. And, the owner probably never took it off-road. Every time I see pictures of frames on the forums from people who live in the rust belt of the country, I cringe at all the rust deterioration that's on everything on the undercarriage. I would definitely not like wrenching as much if I had to fight rusted on bolts and nuts every time I wanted to work on my truck or somebody else's.

    • @TimmyTheToolman

      Timmy The Toolman I recently replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my wife’s 01 3rd gen 4Runner and a brake job that should’ve normally taken 1 hr 2 hrs at the most took about 6 hours because of all the rusted bolts I have the caliper slide pins were basically welded to the caliper from all the rust build up they had it was a real pain in the ass

      If you live in the rustbelt, wash and rinse the underside of your car at the self-service car wash a couple times per winter, or at least at the start of spring, and you will dramatically reduce the amount of rust you have to deal with.

      I find it fun going in there and tearing apart a vehicle. It's different from wrenching on your own vehicle or a friend's. Good advice and Thanks for sharing however at “pick n pull” they charge you for everything. Regardless if it’s part of a whole assembly. The owner had 2 he sold one and has one left they belonged to the guy that owned Lewis mail he passed away and his son is selling off his trucks. The one he has left he wants $3500.00 for it it runs good it has very little rust on the cab and box panel. The brakes and tires are good on it. The gas tank is in good shape. The windshield wipers work the windshield is in good shape. Where it sits it will be easy to drive out. how strict are they about grabbing small, random, miscellaneous parts like fasteners, hoses, connectors, small brackets, etc? Do they watch you or search through all of your shit when you check out? I remember going to these types of places way back in the late 90's, and they were way more chill back then, only really charged you for large parts; you could throw a bunch or small shit into your tool cart & they didn't really care. It seems like times have def changed though.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Рік тому +1

      Fasteners and small parts they don't usually charge for. But, if it's something like relays, switches, or fuses, they'll charge you for them. They'll search your tool bag quickly when you check out, but they're not patting you down or strip searching you upon exit, so I imagine people are walking out with small stuff in their pockets. These wrecking yards make huge profits off the vehicles they purchase, so I don't think they're too worried about people walking out with some small parts.

      He paid around $140 for all 4 parts (2 steering knuckles and 2 Lower Control Arms).
      Lower Control Arms - $180/each side (prices obtained from Camelback Toyota)
      Steering Knuckle (includes Upper Balljoint) - $340/each side (Camelback Toyota)
      Hub Assembly on the Knuckle - $140/each side (Camelback Toyota)
      Total for brand new parts - $1320
      Price of used parts from salvage yard - $140
      Aftermarket LBJ bushings - $60
      Upper Balljoints - $70
      Total for used parts and needed parts to replace on used parts - $270
      Total Savings - $1050 for a couple hours of work
      There are also wheel bearings, seals, ABS gears in each used knuckle. We might use some of the associated parts but definitely not the wheel bearing or seal, so I'm not counting these parts into the equation.

      +Timmy The Toolman Oh no worries, i really enjoy your video and like how you leave all the little bits in so people can get a really good feel for the operation. About the fuel filter, I change one on a buddy's like 95 Ford Exploder and it was a pain but i got it off with a specialty tool. I'll probably be changing it in the beginning of Feb so dont worry about it! :)
      Thanks for the quick response! Have you ever considered installing a after market alarm like a Viper system?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому +1

      The fuel filter change isn't hard unless your fittings are rusted bad. It's best to take pressure off the fuel system by removing the gas cap first. Then, if you still have that plastic protector connected to the frame on the driver side, you need to remove that so you can access the filter. When working with fuel line fittings and other types of line fittings, always use a Flare Nut Wrench to lessen the chance of stripping the fitting. When you get the lines loose, some fuel is going to leak out so make sure your face isn't in the path and get a catch basin to collect the fuel. There's a bracket that holds the filer to the frame and you have to loosen a couple nuts so you can remove the filter once the lines are disconnected. When you put the new filter in, make sure you have the filter in the right flow orientation. The arrow needs to be pointing towards the engine and away from the fuel tank.
      We will make a video of this at some point and hopefully it will be uploaded on the channel by the time you are ready to replace yours.
      No, I've haven't considered installing an alarm. I'd have to say vehicle electrical is my weak point because I haven't messed with stereo installs and other electrical work in the past. But, it would be a good challenge and something to consider for a future video.

    What kind of tires do you use and how big do you get her brand name

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  4 роки тому

      Hey William, this is a question that you will get 10 different answers from 10 different people and is a topic heavily talked about on Toyota forums and Toyota 4runner enthusiast Facebook pages. There's no one type fits all tire. A tire that works well in mud won't be great for road or snow and vice versa. A basic all-season tire is best for road and snow. If you plan on doing lots of off-road, consider getting all-terrain tires. If you're going to do lots of muddy trails, then you might consider mud tires. Mud tires will be noisy on the road and not wear as well as all-terrain or all-season tires. The size you get is going to depend on whether you have a suspension and/or body lift, whether you're going to run wheel spacers or have aftermarket upper control arms, and whether you're willing to do some alteration to the wheel well area to stuff bigger tires. When you go with bigger tires, you then might consider re-gearing your front and rear differentials. Are you starting to understand the can of worms this topic can be? What I'm trying to tell you is we really can't give you a concrete answer because there's so many variables and opinions. The best advice I can give you is buy the type of tires you think that fits your need the best. For the brand, choose one that gets good reviews. For the size, you need to base that on what you're willing to do to make them work with your rig with the right amount of lift and clearance they will require including in considerations of re-gearing your differentials.

    • @TimmyTheToolman

      The one in the video is an older Dewalt cordless gun and I can't remember what I paid for it. My newer Dewalt gun cost around $210 but it's just the gun and doesn't come with batteries or a charger. I had 2 batteries and a charger from the previous gun purchase. I think if you buy a gun that comes with the charger and a couple batteries, you're looking at around $350 -$400.

      Well, San Jose is a big city with big city problems. Yes, there's crime in San Jose with certain areas worse than others. The area of San Jose I live in isn't too bad. There have been vehicle break-ins and burglaries in my area, but for the most part, it hasn't been too bad. The only theft I've been a victim of since I moved into my house 18 years ago is I screwed up and left one of my nice old Schwinn cruisers sitting out in front of my house. I forgot to bring it in. When I realized 2 hours later I forgot to bring it in, somebody stole it. To say the least, I was seriously pissed off. I hate thieves.

    Do they have a list of cars somewhere posted ?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому

      You can do a search on the Pick and Pull website for the vehicle you're looking for and the search radius of how far you're willing to drive and they'll list off the locations that have the vehicle and comparable vehicles you're looking for. Say you're looking for parts for a 2000 Toyota 4runner. When you do a search for that vehicle, the Pick and Pull website will list Toyota 4runners close to that year as well. You can also set it up that you get a notification when the vehicle you're looking for pops up in their inventory but I haven't actually used this and don't know how well it works and how quickly you get notified. I think there's probably preferential treatment to certain folks that are either friends or family members of people that work there that will be notified first when a desirable vehicle becomes available. Or, maybe a regular customer greases the palm of an employee to get notified quickly when a vehicle they're looking to pull parts off of pops up in their inventory.
      Anyway, it's a great way to save money on parts you need for your vehicle.

    • @ratbert86
      @ratbert86 7 років тому

      you're referring to notifications through row52.com. I've worked for them as a moderator and can tell you that there is *no* preferential treatment of any particular users over any others as far as notification of new arrivals. Anyone that signs up for alerts gets the additions at the same time.. Pick and pulls each update their inventory (new cars that were added and old cars that were removed that day) at the end of the day. The notifications of the new additions go out the following morning so generally these are 1 day fresh to the yard at that point. Now as to an individual yard having some kind of backlot deal on popular stuff - personal experience tells me that does happen (wholesalers and dealers is my guess).

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  7 років тому +1

      Yes, I was referring to preferential access to new inventory information for friends, family and people who grease the palms of the employees. There's no doubt this happens because it's human nature that people working there are going to hook up their family and friends about a desirable vehicle that comes on the lot. And, people are always going to be motivated by money so greasing the palm of an employee for advanced information on vehicles that are arriving is definitely happening. Thanks for the comment.

    • @ratbert86
      @ratbert86 7 років тому

      Yup - before I started working on the website I took the pictures of the new arrivals at a very busy yard in Northern CA. It put out between 40 and 60 cars a day, 5-6 days a week. I visited three times a week to take the pictures and learned a lot while doing that. Most of these yards have professional resellers and core buyers that visit the yard each and every day.

      He wanted the UCAs because he has skid plates for them and it requires drilling for one of the bolts. With the LCAs off the vehicle, it's much easier to drill through, probably with a drill press. We'll also replace the bushings for new OEM or aftermarket. He'll then swap the UCAs currently on his truck for the drilled out ones with new bushings.
      For the steering knuckles, he wants to perform a strengthening modification he's heard about which is welding on a gusset. We'll probably replace the wheel bearing, seal and any other related wear parts also before replacing the modified steering knuckles for the OEM ones currently on his rig.
