We had a tape in the car of this song by Iain Mackintosh when I was a kid. Must have listened to this over 1000 times and only now do I understand what actually happened to Paddy. Thanks for the animation.
The Sick Note (Why Paddy's Not At Work Today) Dear sir, I write this note to you, to tell you of me plight And at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight My body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray And I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work, today [Verse 2] While working on the fourteenth floor, some bricks I had to clear Now, to throw them down from such a height, it was not a good idear The foreman wasn't very pleased, he being an awkward sod He said I'd have to take them down the ladders in me hod [Verse 3] Now clearing all these bricks by hand, it was so very slow So I hoisted up a barrel, and secured the rope below But in my haste to do the job, I was too blind to see That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me [Verse 4] And so when I untied the rope, the barrel fell like lead And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead Well, I shot up like a rocket, 'til to my dismay I found That half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down [Verse 5] Well the barrel broke me shoulder, as to the ground it sped And when I reached the top, I banged the pulley with me head Well, I clung on tight, though numbed with shock, from this almighty blow And the barrel spilled out half the bricks, fourteen floors below [Verse 6] Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more Still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel scattered round [Verse 7] I lay there groaning on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst When the barrel hit the pulley wheel, and then the bottom burst Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope As I lay there bleeding on the ground, I let go the bloody rope [Verse 8] The barrel then being heavier, it started down once more And landed right across me as I lay upon the floor Well, it broke three ribs, and my left arm, and I can only say That I hope you understand, why Paddy's not at work today
I second that! Had me laughing out loud, the sheer Irony. In The Netherlands we call this "dry" humor, don't know for certain the English translation of that...but I think it translates as "deadpan humor".
i remember when i was in my 20s going with my dad(RIP)to pick up my mum fae the bingo and i played it by the corries all the way there 5 times i think ive still never lost so much water through greeting with laughter,,,great song great story so funny always
Fun though this is, it's not a patch on the original version of the story created by the late and brilliant Gerard Hoffnung - as others have pointed out- presented by him at his 1958 Address to the Oxford Union. I find it disingenouous of performers of this song not to have acknowledged the source of the inspiration. Do please take the time to listen to the original story, related by the unique Mr Hoffnung. You'll find it immensely rewarding!
I enjoyed seeing the visualization of this hysterical song. The poor chap really got a raw deal from all these legos!
I really love this song - it's just so funny! I can't stop laughing when I hear this hilarious song!
I work in construction and I show this video to all new guys on their first day 😂😂
bet they all write this note lol without doing the mistakes lol
Caleb Anthony 😂 me and my friend used to sing this on the pish at lunch
I wonder how many lives you saved doing that? XD
Bye then lol
Forman:... You're still coming in to work though, right?
Mythbusters tested this with their crash test dummy and it played out exactly like the song. I've never laughed so hard in my life.
Oh? There's a Myth Buster's re-enactment??

This song sure made a big smile on my face as I drink my coffee preparing for my own work day. Thanks for the share.
Your lego stop motion illustration must become unesco world heritage !!!
Already loved this song but these Lego men have enhanced my enjoyment so much, well done, great job.
This has been a public information film brought to you by the Health & Safety Executive.
suddenly remembered this masterpiece after 14 years, it is still great.

This sounds like the most elaborate, creative sick day excuse an employee could give their boss ever
My dad used to play this in the car when we were kids....we loved it LOL!!
I'm not surprised - it's such a funny song!
Well I've heard this song a many a times before
But your movie with it had me rolling on the floor
Love what you did with the Lego to accommodate this fine tune ! two thumbs up !
I have no idea how I got here but it is now my favourite UA-cam video
My Dad used to play this on the guitar for my brother and I as kids. Thanks for sharing this.

The Sick Note (Why Paddy's Not At Work Today)
Dear sir, I write this note to you, to tell you of me plight
And at the time of writing, I am not a pretty sight
My body is all black and blue, me face a deathly gray
And I write this note to say why Paddy's not at work, today
[Verse 2]
While working on the fourteenth floor, some bricks I had to clear
Now, to throw them down from such a height, it was not a good idear
The foreman wasn't very pleased, he being an awkward sod
He said I'd have to take them down the ladders in me hod
[Verse 3]
Now clearing all these bricks by hand, it was so very slow
So I hoisted up a barrel, and secured the rope below
But in my haste to do the job, I was too blind to see
That a barrel full of building bricks was heavier than me
[Verse 4]
And so when I untied the rope, the barrel fell like lead
And clinging tightly to the rope I started up instead
Well, I shot up like a rocket, 'til to my dismay I found
That half way up I met the bloody barrel coming down
[Verse 5]
Well the barrel broke me shoulder, as to the ground it sped
And when I reached the top, I banged the pulley with me head
Well, I clung on tight, though numbed with shock, from this almighty blow
And the barrel spilled out half the bricks, fourteen floors below
[Verse 6]
Now, when these bricks had fallen from the barrel to the floor
I then outweighed the barrel and so started down once more
Still clinging tightly to the rope, I sped towards the ground
And I landed on the broken bricks the barrel scattered round
[Verse 7]
I lay there groaning on the ground I thought I'd passed the worst
When the barrel hit the pulley wheel, and then the bottom burst
Well, a shower of bricks rained down on me, I hadn't got a hope
As I lay there bleeding on the ground, I let go the bloody rope
[Verse 8]
The barrel then being heavier, it started down once more
And landed right across me as I lay upon the floor
Well, it broke three ribs, and my left arm, and I can only say
That I hope you understand, why Paddy's not at work today
Best version yet :)
(must get that lego set)
He pulled out a gun! I think I would call him something other than and awkward sod...
Or not...
Love it ❤if 0nly we were all so grateful for wisdom and knowledge 😂😂
Fantastic! Made my day!
Had to watch it, great.

TheOBOM You can say dry humour in English too.
Congratulation!
Well done

A guy from Germany made a parody to this, its called Fränkische Krankmeldung
It's also interesting as it actually DOES have music (most people do it a Capella).
This is a family tradition lol
it is a fam. tradition 9this is my older brother
haha great, the song as well as the video
Cool anamation
Love it my grandpa showed me thos
Brilliant!
Nice!!!
the song describes exactly some of my employers
Try listening to the original (spoken version) by Gerard Hoffnung. This is good, but Hoffnung is just hilarious.

Too much information BRAIN OVERLOAD SHUtting down
My Lang arts teacher animated this in class and showed it to us which he uploaded on you tube and I CAN'T FIND IT!
Awesome! Funny!
The song was written by Mr. Pat Cooksey
Not heard this version before
Hahaha :D Very good job! :D
Who is singing in this video?
Poor Paddy :(
song name?
Can I use this as a Zoom background for a performance? Beautifully done
Yeah, sure, go for it.
@@jaarf Thanks! I was supposed to sing this song live but I broke my arm. So I recorded it for them instead. I'll pass your permission along.
@@DeclanJMcCabe You weren't clearing bricks by any chance? ;-)
@@jaarf I almost wish. Skiing....not sure if Paddy's were intended to ski ;)
@@jaarf skiing....well failing to ski at that point I suppose
Totes shamazeballs hillares
Pat Cooksey
Was that actually Cooksey's original version?
exultant
Ouch
in a nutshell gravity's a bitch
Officially Deppressed.
I love this but don't like the version of the song
I personally like Sean Cannon's version best.
Ha
Paddy ain't at work cos Yuri and miroslav have their jobs
like the video, but the person singing didn't do that great a job...i overlayed sean cannon singing with this.
This version of the song misses the essence of the song. Good video though!
Tony Hunter no offence but how does this version of the song miss the essence of the song?
@overblast0000 oi! play nice
I don't think that him
I prefer "The Cories" version. Its their song anyway.
Would have been brilliant with the lego guys.
I know the song is MEANT to be funny...somehow but the tune gives it a sort of sad feel to it
