@@dextermorgan1 I’ve enjoyed Sony (mobile) since the early 90’s, when they were still made in Japan. There were certainly some lean years, but I still have a place in my heart for them. And of all the old gear I used to run, (with the understanding that all of that stuff has a shelf life) Sony gave me the least problems.
Just think, the last person that touched those components was more than likely a middle aged Japanese woman that packaged them. Now 38 years later, she’s either gone or hella old if she’s still around. I love NOS stuff, especially when it’s still in perfect condition like these.
I had those same speakers, awesome that they’re in such great condition. I’m pretty certain they have cloth surrounds, which was fairly common from some companies for the harsh environments in the car.
They could very well be foam. Not all of them go bad over time. I've got foam surround from the 80s and even late 70s that are still good (obviously have never been replaced). It mostly depends on sunlight exposure and the composition of the foam I guess.
😮 i had these exact speakers in my competition car !! They sounded amazing I Loved them !! I actually took them apart and color matched the door . Too bad you cant post pictures.😮
Those are speakers that instead of using in a car, I would build boxes for them and use them as stereo bookshelf speakers, and I think they look great.
I remember listening to a set of those back in the day and really liking the way they sounded. They were a no go for me because of the huge square bodied grille and chunky crossover.Unless you were doing a truck install, it was difficult to fit either in the average car. Back in those days 35 watts rms got you plenty of sound in a mild system.
Damn that tweeter is smooth maaaaan! And it hits high for its day 22khz I think i saw its response was. That was almost unheard of back then I'm sure if it. Wow that's so airy 🤤
Ice and Fire, Heat it up?? Man I've been looking for it!? Super dupper dope speaker's, absolutely amazing how it was still so perfectly vacuum sealed and packed to tha T with perfection, awesome!!👍🏽💯💯
I would be careful with such caps that have sit for so long. Those caps can last for far longer than that but they might very well be shorted because the oxide layer depletes over time without voltage. Not sure if non-polar caps can be reformed either.
The likely reason the tweeter is so big is that the crossover frequency is probably a lot lower than typical 2-way systems. That lower frequency allows the speakers to be separated at a greater distance and still sound somewhat cohesive as a set. The adapter plates suggested the idea
The biggest reason for the size is the ferrite magnet. Modern car tweeters use neodymium magnets to make them smaller. The diameter of the diaphragm is a normal 1”.
Those were absolutely mint ! I would have had a moral battle going on , do i open or not ?..Then later i was like be gentle when you hooked them up . Lol..i thought they sounded good. Decent bass from what i could tell. I wonder what Sony would think of these being so nice.?
I didn’t think the video would be complete without hearing them. I did only hook up one mid/crossover/tweeter, so the other is still “unused”. IDK, Sony hit me up if you want these!
I looked up Sony Drive in Park Ridge NJ in street view and looked for Sony on maps. It appears to be a very short section of road with nothing there now except a Marriott hotel.
Old Sony stuff is amazing. Them tweeters slap hard! It's too bad they make some bad decisions these days: Like their new Playstation streaming, handheld video game thing, fans are so outraged!
Maybe since they're intended to go together, they went with the safer of the ratings that both could handle? Say the woofer can handle 35w RMS and the tweeter can actually handle 70w RMS, they may not want to give the impression that you can run 70w to them and blow the woofer? Just a thought. They look great
I was thinking the same thing. Those are probably the most resilient things ever. I'd apply a thing coat of rubber vulcanization liquid (inner tube patch glue) from time to time, if they sit in dry places and in in sunlight. I would love to hear what were the most predominant reasons for manufacturers to choose foam and rubber over impregnated cloth/paper. Especially as most of the PA-stuff still uses cloth surrounds and they are meant to last! Rubber either starts melting or cracking as time goes by. I know that from first hand, having collected vintage boomboxes for years. And we all know what happens to foam, though there seems to be some old school stuff with probably some seriously bad chemicals in them that keep them from crumbling away... I believe there is also some old (from early 80's maybe) law or regulation which demands that the foam has to ultimately break down when it's dumped on a landfill... Nowadays it seems a bit crazy as micro plastics are everywhere and a crumbling polyurethane is definitely a common source. I know a big safety shoe manufacturer that uses some sort of cocktail in them as they may crumble away without giving any warnings. I know a LOT of cases where the rubber sole has just dropped and under the rubber is a slimy/crumbly mess. The ones with full polyurethane soles also start to melt/crumble, especially if they are stored in a warm closet for longer times.
I had one of those type manuals spread out on the hood one day. Gas man was leaving, asked me where I was heading, i replied crazy, you wanna ride? Never liked those manuals myself
As a ridiculous Sony fanboy, I completely approve. And the fact that your surrounds haven’t already turned to dust is pretty wild.
How does one become a Sony Fanboy? Serious question. Thanks.

It’s crazy to think there is more like this that was never used or opened. I keep finding the coolest stuff to show you guys some unreal stuff coming…
6:51 the inputs are what most factory preakers had at the time. Actually nicely convenient.
Idk what it is about the Sony products made in Japan but it’s always top notch no matter how old it is
1986-87 I was a senior in HS. That was the time I was rocking the Pioneer TS-X30's in my 79 Mercury Zephyr.
Anything vintage sony from 70s till before around 2005 still makes my heart sing the older the better though! ❤️

Great video, Big D. Keep'em coming!!!
Love the crossover and the 'emergency' crossover cap on the tweeter
I love the old school Sony aesthetic with these!
Love these unboxings of NOS goodness!
2:13 LMFAOOO!! MAN, i been really loving your recent vids. you getting back to the old school stuff again!! Freaking love it!!
I remember installing a few sets at our shop. We sold tons of Sony no Bologna.
I love these oldschool audio system reviews
If I had the appropriate car, I'd definitely install this system in it. Love this!
That's an awesome find!!! I appreciate you popping open the crossover too, soooo good!!
Big D, I very much appreciate you showing these, as well as everyone else im sure. So nice for the late 80s!
I'm enjoying seeing the old school gear and getting to hear it thanks for you time making these videos.
It was so hard to get that to pause at the right time but now I know what's in the box! lol
That tweeter is bigger than some of the amps you test.
I actually get a high when i open new speakers from a box, cool review 👍
I was 14 and I remember them. Dad wanted a set, but that was a lot of jack back in the day.
One thing you didn't mention on your side is the sq on whats your take on it, would love to see another video connected to an amp, thanks.
Those are speakers that instead of using in a car, I would build boxes for them and use them as stereo bookshelf speakers, and I think they look great.
Wow, that's a nice time capsule.
I had a set of Sony from the same era and the surrounds disintegrated immediately upon opening last year, the sadness was great
The surrounds actually look like treated cloth, so they should hold up for a long time.
I stand corrected 👍
Wow great video, fit it in your classic car ,great stuff regards mark
Absolutely always wanted those...ended up getting alot of Optimus and Realistic stuff...
These are soft dome tweeter. Quite fancy for the time.

I just found your channel! Love it been buying Sony products since the 90’s man good old days.
Welcome! You can see a lot of nostalgia here as well as my main channel Williston Audio Labs 👌
Those would be great in some bookself speaker cabinets😊
Amazing they sound clean and sharp

Reminds me if something that Jake would have installed in his 1984 Porsche 944.
They look amazing I hope you play them sometime!❤❤❤
02:24 to 02:28 brings back nostalgic memories and makes subbing to a great channel a breeze 🤠👍
So cool! Wow! Great video! ❤
I love the old school content. Some of these I have seen, and some I have not. After all it was old technology that brought us to modern technology.
You’ve tested amplifiers smaller (and more potent) than those tweeters! My, how times have changed!!!
Damn that speaker set is older than me!
Damn that tweeter is the truth . The 6.5 is ok but still sounded great
Just Cool ! Thanx Big
Amazing find!
Wow! Somebody in Japan packed those speakers up 37 years ago and they haven't been touched since until you unboxed them.
That was the part that made me apprehensive about unboxing them…so rare to see NIB 37yr old speakers!

Another great old school review FTW!

Sonds really good for the age. 👍
Have just made a sealed vox with 2 cerwin vega vflex 154 now I just need to get it in the car.. think it will bang good.. 🎉😊

If those are ferrofluid tweeters they definitely needed some "exercise" to sound decent assuming the fluid hadn't dried up.
All the best stuff is made in Japan, Doc.
Very nice man!
Nice !!! Bet they sound great
That crossover looks like an 80's tv remote.
Excelente video. 👍
Nice set
The tweeter's magnet size is comparable the one found on the Realistic Minimus 7's silk dome tweeter from the same era.
A sonoridade desses alto falantes japoneses antigos são impressionantes...mesmo tendo cone de celulose, o timbre sonoro é muuto bom.

Those were made the year I was born 😊
Sounds like the 80's too.
old school are great, I had a Sanyo Mini component made in japan it was 30 years old and it souded much better than new stereos.
Hey Big D, love your work. Note, it is just 1980s, not 1980's. Also, when abbreviating a decade it is '80s, not 80's, because you are removing the 19.
Ahh, yes. That new speaker smell. 👍🏽
Super cool!

Oh man I miss audio focused Sony. Today it seems they mainly focus on cameras and TV’s
Perfect. Thanks.
2:55 I believe rare sets of these came with an automatic ... ;--)
Sony does love them squares
Price?
Sony.... the one and only!😊
Really odd that the tweeters have a capacitor on them. Why is it not part of the crossover!?
I think it's purely for protection in case the tweeter is hooked up without the crossover.
Old Sony stuff is amazing. Them tweeters slap hard! It's too bad they make some bad decisions these days: Like their new Playstation streaming, handheld video game thing, fans are so outraged!
Always been a great company….
How is it that the tweeters and the woofers both have the same rms rating
They play different frequencies determined by the crossover. I get what you are saying though. Never saw that before.
Maybe since they're intended to go together, they went with the safer of the ratings that both could handle? Say the woofer can handle 35w RMS and the tweeter can actually handle 70w RMS, they may not want to give the impression that you can run 70w to them and blow the woofer? Just a thought. Please test jbl flip/charge/extreme/partybox amplifier
After all that no comment on sound quality compared to newer equipment?
The point wasn’t to determine SQ just to show off. SQ is subjective and in this case I’m just glad they worked for the demo
Time travel is real
That isn't a fabric surround? Sure looks like it.
Could be!

Sony always been a force!
ich habe noch ein unbenutztes set Magnat M9 !!!
Definitely an upgrade compared to the junk that came factory in the cars of the 80’s.

Agreed total frustration
Im hoping someday you get a hold of some ALPINE 6399 3 way 6x9s. Best 6x9 ever made to this date. Hands down Japan quality and sound
@@rockislandrailfan2861 I can't remember what those look like. Would it be possible for you to send me a link
Pioneer ts-6908 were the greatest, but tge Alpines were awesome. Yes I know my opinion is subjective lol!

love to see how Sony's naming sense hasn't improved over all these years 😂

That was like 2 weeks pay for me back then.

It would be a shame to install it in the car and have it damaged after such a state of conservation!
