Man!!! Loved every second of this video! I loved Pyramid back in the day. Loved their LED spectrum analyzer displays so much. I remember getting my dad to bring me to the local flea market as much as he could on Saturdays, so I could look at the new pyramid brand items that they had for sale. I love looking at the cool woofers, the tweeters, the amplifiers, and the spectrum analyzer equalizers from pyramid! It just brings so much joy to my heart to see these things again! For the little bit of money I had as a young teenager, Pyramid was where it was at for me!

Back in 1994 my first car was a 1984 300ZX. I put together a system for around $300 that consisted of a 10” MTX band pass box which I upgraded with Marathon subs, three low wattage Coustic Power Logic amps, one for subs and the other two for mids/highs, 4 factory full range 5 1/2” for mids, a set of cheap Pioneer dome tweeters from Walmart, an Optimus single disc player, and finally a Pyramid electronic crossover that a buddy of mine gave me. That crossover brought that system to the next level and people couldn’t believe it was just two 10”s. The best memories of those days was everyone gathering around each other’s car to check out what you had inside. And it was all about seeing how loud you could get while maintaining SQ. Fun times.

Back in the 80's Pyramid was barely flea-market fodder. But we all bought some of their stuff when we couldn't afford Pyle, Blaupunckt or Kraco! We used to get things like Pyramid power Boster-EQ's and counter-fit Pioneer speakers (looked like Pioneer...didn't sound like Pioneer) at the San Jose Flea Market. Problem was they never lasted very long! LOL

Back in the mid 90s I had a gold colored "200 watt" 4 channel Pyramid powered eq and a 2 channel Pyramid amp (I think it was 2x500 but I'm not sure), bridged, powering my single MTX Eliminator 12. It was my first system. I got them brand new at a flea market outside of Chicago. I loved it at the time. My car was an '85 Mercury Cougar (with the 5.0L V8 😎). It definitely bumped.... That sure does bring back a lot of great memories!!

  • @kimvette1
    @kimvette1 2 місяці тому +3

More thoughts: Pyramid were PERFECTLY capable of producing excellent products, so there was no need to lie on their budget items with bogus "peak" wattage numbers. What did "Peak" mean anyway - the power output it can muster for 1/20,000th of a second before the rails collapse? The power rating the amp might have gotten in an alternate universe where the laws of physics are different from ours? Ratings determined by a tarot card reading or seance? The bet the PM placed on a horse with the bookie the night before? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They should have rated these 15, 30, etc. watt amps honestly, and let the legacy, super pro and better super blue and other decent amp ratings speak for themselves. I really think they cannibalized their own sales by rating the cramp amps with fictional ratings matching their higher-quality amplifiers actual output, and they did often overstate power output on even their high quality items.
I wonder if any former Pyramid folks follow this channel - it'd be interesting to get their take on how Pyramid rated and positioned their products (and also how they made these decisions internally).

The chip specs say 30W/channel at 10% THD. 10%, not 1%. So yeah, had you ran a test up to 10% you'd likely get 30 watts, or at least the advertised 25 instead of 14, but it would sound horrendous. Regardless, that's a pretty cool EQ and would be a worthy upgrade for anyone looking to power some aftermarket speakers as that's enough power to set fire to a set of 80s or 90s era OEM speakers.

Back in the early to mid 90s an EQ booster like that would have been welcome in a budget build for mids & highs or even a full range system if you didn't care about bass. Pyramid likely wouldn't have gotten such a rotten reputation if they had advertised even semi-accurate wattage ratings on their gear.
15x4 watts today is barely head unit power but back in the early to mid 90s it was respectable as many stock head units only output 2-5 watts per channel and even a lot of aftermarket ones only did about 10 watts per channel. Plus you got the EQ to do your V pattern!
I remember in 1991 my parents bought a Plymouth minivan that had a "premium" Infinity cassette audio system, it was a $600-800 add-on over the price of the stock audio system. That system only had a total of 80 watts RMS, 27x2 in the rear and 13x2 in the front. It had an separate amp unit that was located near the foot area of the passenger front seat. I remember teenage me looking into trying to hack into the system to install a powered Bazooka Tube that I wanted to tuck under or next to the middle bench seat. But my dad forbid me from doing so. Ahh those were the days!

They were the high end super pros with American flag dust cover. 120 oz magnets and 2.5 vc's, 102db/1w (looked alot like a peavey) .
Impressive specs for 1995. Ran them with a 2ft long Rockwood surfboard amp. $600 in the whole setup and no one could come close. Craziest thing is if you know 65-67 Galaxies. That box was above the rear-end under the package tray and I still had more trunk than most cars could dream of...

That reminds me of my set-up. Cheap as all hell but it sounded great. I really think that RockWood amp is not too bad, especially considering price (mine being something like 60 W X 4 for $100 give or take). Plus, I think it was the specially designed box that I made that helped for my two 15" Annihilator subs in something like a 10 cu ft ported box. I did not have that large of trunk (I had a harchback), though, so that custom box claimed ALL the space. You gotta have priorities, right? The "system"' comes fist! I still can't match the sound that I had with that box. Such deep bass extension and with clarity. It would not POUND where you can hear it for miles, but accuracy was simply stunning. Eventually it got stolen :(

Pyramid is a brand I haven't heard in a lot of years! I only saw them sold at flea markets, their head units looked pretty weak, but their EQ's didn't seem bad, and they had working ones on display. i bought an earlier version of this in my '79 Audi backing a Sunkyong cassette unit with AM stereo, and it worked fine for what I wanted. I was never one of those "loud bass is all that matters!" people. Hey, it was fun to play with a looked good! I had no complaints! I haven't even thought of car audio in years, and in my stuff I have an original Pioneer cassette/FM unit from the early 70's, a new in box Bowman AM/FM small frame in dash unit VW dealers used to sell. I also have a late 60's underdash cassette deck I took from a 67 Vette I was restoring. Now I have to wonder if there's any value to this stuff.

The led lights have a quicker response Compared to other eqs. Keep in mind 15 watts in a 20 sq ‘ area , can be enough for average listeners.

This reminds me of a powered eq I had in a 1979 Camaro I had in high school. It was a Sound Barrier Commander V and I had 6 speakers hooked up to it. Back then it sounded great. Has always enjoy your videos.

I had a blaupunkt unit similar to this. I do not recall it having the bouncing lights, though. It was one of those that claimed a level of power but only if lightning struck it. But it WAS a step up from the power from the head unit.

Early 90s had two pyramid 15s and a pyramid surfboard. The 15s were translucent and I had lights in the box that would dim when the bass hit. Opened up the surfboard amp for something and the board only took up 1/4 of the inside. Poor school kids had to make due!!!

……THAT, was actually fun to watch. I had a very dear friend who used to enjoy shocking folks by installing big megawatt amps in tiny Geo Metros, and Daihatsu Charades scaring the beejesus out of folks! It was harmless fun, but it was truly hilarious also. I challenged him on building a sealed, three driver sub using shallow mount drivers, and the only mandated caveat was that it HAD to have one 12, one 10, and one 8 inch driver, and the mad scientist actually pulled it off! It of course wasn’t world-class deep at all (36Hz) but those disco-beat demos floored everyone, and he had a successful 15 month side hustle run of 26 of those cabinets which I thought was pretty good.🌹

I did at some point have a duel pyramid amplifier setup and I've never seen one since it was all a/b but it had a mono amp and a 4 channel amp I thought it was pretty cool the mono amp had power wires and the 4 channel amp had Spade connectors but they were double up on power remote and ground so you hook up the mono amp I literally dug both out of a yard I never got the mono amp to work but the 4 channel work fine after a good cleaning maybe it was something i was doing wrong but the mud was caked up in them bad it had a full on relay in it and when it clicked on it pop the fuse I don't know what happened to them i may have left them in my old apartment or something would love to see that setup again working

Yes that’s the same one I had, cr70! It was awesome because not only could you set the desired cutoff frequencies, but you could also separately adjust the levels of the lows, mids and highs. I had it mounted behind my passenger seat so I could easily reach back and adjust it from the drivers seat.

I still have a few old Pyramid amps and eg/amps from the late 80s early 90s. They werent the best but they were affordabe. I have a couple of those old school Jensen amp/eq too, those were smaller, cheaper, and maybe had a little more kick. But they liked to blow caps if pushed to hard. We all love some Alpine, if nothing else, just for bragging rights. Lol

Still got a set of the Pyramid SuperBlue subs 2 600watt 8ohm subs and 1 700 watt 4 ohm superblue they are 250-300 watts rms. But hearing 2 10's in a big sealed box in highschool got me more into car audio those 10's superblues sounded real good in a hatchback focus surprised me how they sounded. Also traded the purple gold series pyramid 1200 watt amp 2 12's 700 watt Super Blues for some 13's la wire knockoff lowrider rims
