You mentioned ‘Why am I looking at SG’s?’ That’s easy… because it’s the greatest guitar Gibson has ever made. It’s light, it feels great to play, it sounds fantastic, and it looks pretty bad ass as well 🤙😂 I own 3 of them and I’m wanting a fourth one with a P90 set up next here 🤙
I agree with you. The only downside of an SG (assuming you have one that doesn’t neck dive) is that if you so much as lean against, it bends the whole guitar sharp. With something like a Les Paul, or any Fender, you can rock away on it and it won’t bend. I find that I have to be much cognizant of how I’m playing an SG. I have to be careful about how I’m holding it/sitting with it. But aside from that, I agree that it’s overall maybe the best Gibson.
Agree, I am a P90 guy as well. But I had and SG and it was not for me. Sound and playability were great EXCEPT FOR the neck dive. Now I play a Yamaha Revstar STD with P90s and it is fantastic with perfect balance for this type of guitar style. So I traded the SG toward a Martin D35 which I will likely never sell, along with a Fender Strat. I never bonded with. I used to be a name snob, but have had enough guitars over time that it is more about what plays so well it disappears to my awareness while playing and what I like to hear from its voice.
I love that I can live my previous US lifestyle through you without spending any money 😬 This is the best bit for the enthusiast shopping the top shelf. Although in Portland Oregon you’d typically order a few guitars to your home and send back what doesn’t float your boat. Not so local Seattle would be the place to take a Peach style trip. Emerald City is a great store for a vintage safari. Very cool and humble staff there too. These are also great days out even if you don’t buy something. The social interaction for enthusiasts is the most rewarding experience. Also in a store like these you can ask, “never mind cost or brand name, what real gems do you have in the store right now?” You might be surprised by the answer, as it’s not always a top shelf product and having invested time with store staff you can get some very honest answers, and reveal some magical options you never would have considered on such a trip. Plus your sociable approach can get you a better deal on even the gear they initially tell you cannot have any discounts. Where there’s a will there usually a way 😉
PART 2 HERE: ua-cam.com/video/1FyIu4e-12k/v-deo.html Hey all - this is going to be in 2 or 3 parts... the plan to buy an sg went a bit crazy. you'll see how in part 2!! Also, sorry for any flickering in the b roll - i couldn't light this myself so my camera picked up on the lights weirdly. Thanks for watching!
Yep, that’s the SG tone 👍 It’s unique IMO and is one of those guitars that doesn’t hit you at first but shows it’s genius after a few weeks of playing.
I just got the Pelham Blue '64 reissue SG... I had no intention of getting it, I sold my Gibson '59 LP reissue and was happy with the collection, but I tried out that SG and it just fit perfect with what I wanted. Focused bitey mids vs the muddier lows of the LP just fit me better and I pulled the trigger. Up to now, no complaints.
Noooooo, I need part 2 now!!!! Brilliant, just goes to show how important it is to get down to a shop and play some stuff, what you like might not be what you thought you wanted! And I agree with the other comment, no need to justify or explain anything regards how you finance your gear! None of anybody else’s business and they shouldn’t be asking!
This is going to have a dramatic ending...!! working on part 2 right now for release tomorrow or day after :) Yeah - I feel funny I mentioned it now :) but at least I have talked about it now! I don't mind being asked, especially if someone is young and they just can't see how they could ever get where they want to be... it can help them to keep dreaming and have ambition :)
Yeah they tend to have a great choice of high end stuff (and loads of everything) and now it is by appointment only so you don't have to fight over anything or play in front of lots of people!!
Great review of some excellent SGs, James. Completely understand what you (very eloquently) say about the signature Hendrix model. All were nice guitars - I loved the look of the Pelham Blue model - but you've got to choose 'the one' for you. You've clearly bonded quickly with the gold one and, on hearing it, I can understand why. Enjoy! :-)
The gold Sg took a hold of me and possessed me to sub! Been watching your vids for a while lately. Love the light weight of the Sg and obviously the rugged sound!
Ah don’t worry James. We don’t think you’re a Bloose Lawyer. We know you are😜. But in seriousness. Love the collection and that you SHARE it with us! Keep on being you!
Just came across your video. This is what I always ask for re anyone doing Utube videos. Guitar store trips to boutique guitar stores. Some of us just can’t get to them. My city has none. We just got a nice store but not like this and it’s on the outskirts. A major city, O’Neil store. Anyway, will watch and hit like. Gotta finish up some things first. Thx so much. 👍
I very much appreciate your honesty regarding your capitalization procedures. And SG guitars are a combination Gibson and Fender guitars, as are the Firebirds. These choices could have been somewhat dependent upon the age of the strings. So far ... the GOLD wins. CUSTOM sounded really good. But worth the extra dough?
I LOVE SG's sound but sold my '61 reissue as I just couldn't get used to the thin neck (personal problems, ha ha). Have you found any model that has a fatter neck? [That RIFT though! I guess I need one now!]
Dude I feel the exact same way about signature guitars, at the end of the day, you’re carrying the weight of the artist on your shoulders when finding your own sound is so much more fulfilling. My ebony SG and my Les Paul junior don’t make me play like any artist and will only ever sound like me!! 🤘🤘
Words of wisdom coming from someone who is carrying the weight of none other than Les Paul. The only person in history to have more signature models than Slash.
I don't even know who that John Mayor guy is, I just know I love this Silver Sky guitar. Certainly will not influence my playing … I know of Lester Polsfuss, sure, and I kinda get what he was searching for … basically the same tone I love, but that doesn't feel like any weight on my shoulders either … if the tone is what you are searching for then it is the right thing for you. But I never would buy a JEM just because I like Steve Vai … that would certainly have bad complications.
Nice vid, and good description of your journey. To me the ‘61 SG (w sidewinder vibrola) sounded best- through earbuds google and an iPhone.. looking fwd to part 2.
I have a 2020 SG Standard 61 Maestro and I can't live without the vibrato. I've always played Teles so I'm not the biggest humbucker fan so I put a set of p90s sized for a humbucker rout. It's a great guitar. Don't listen to anyone that says that a maestro has tuning issues. It's no more susceptible to that than any other vibrato (the sideways vibrato is another story). Gibson guitars because of their string geometry are more fickle than Fenders but if your slots are properly cut and lubricated and you use it for its intended purpose (shimmer, not dive bombs) it works perfectly fine. Love that gold one!
Beginner comment here. Can James or anyone tell me the scale used in most of the playing here? That's the style I'm looking to learn. I have my Minor Pentatonic in A (of course) but need to progress. Can anyone give me some advice? Many thanks in advance.
Gold one was lovely, but I think it was helped by you being inspired by it, the Les Paul SG was equal in its own way, but the feel influences it massively of course, and in turn affects the feel of your playing, the Hendrix one was unremarkable, even though I could tell you were really ‘giving it some’ to try to get something out of it and give it a fair chance
Hey! I shop at Peach and it’s a great place. I’ve also been eyeing the exact SGs that you have in this video and I think know what you ended up with as I’ve been shopping the same one. 😉
Very insightful. Loved your comparison of 4 different SGs! I owned 4 SGs in my life too, from a 1971 red one to a 2018 Autumn Mist '61 RI, the best I ever had but unfortunately it got totally destroyed in the devastating Wooroloo Bushfire last year... If I were you I wouldn't be concerned about that "Jimi Hendrix SG", it was just a Polaris white SG Custom that he played only occasionally. Sister Rosetta Tharpe is the one who made the SG famous, and I saw a picture of Les Paul with Mary Ford on the record cover of the 1962 "Warm & Wonderful" with a white (then) Les Paul SG. And the first time I saw someone playing one Live was in 1966, Dave Colman from the infamous band Casey Jones and the Governors. I will always associate the white SG Custom with this concert. So IMHO Gibson marketing the white SG Custom by labelling it the "Jimi Hendrix SG" is obviously a try to make more $$$...a LOT more $$$! Just my 2 cents.
