You can take your honeycomb mesh screen off to clean inside better. There is an internal snap ring with a hole in each end that holds it in. Put a nail or something small in one of the holes and take out that end and work your way around until it falls out. Be careful not to damage the honeycomb.🙂
I have the eight cylinder Northstar, should I take the whole throttle body off and if I do will I have to buy a gasket to put it back together, Thanks Rocky
First off nice how to video. Second the never ending honeycomb filter debate. To remove or leave in? The only reason the screen is the throttle body is too straighten the airflow going over the mass air flow sensor itself. Why? To help provide the ECM with a steady accurate reading from the mass air flow sensor at idle. Yup that's it! It improves your idle by basically stabilizing the airflow going into it. Is there any reason to remove the honeycomb filter? Yes! Flow bench tests have shown time and time again those honeycomb filters restrict 10%-15% of airflow going into the engine. Therefor causing less high RPM horsepower, hardly an issue for a everyday driver or commuter car. I've been working on the series II 3.8 for well over a decade and have two of these engines in my own privately owned cars. I have one stock 3.8 in a impala and one 3.8 SC in Pontiac GTP with motor modifications done. Both have the screen removed and both idle just fine. I've actually had the 3.8 supercharged series II on a dyno and seen a HP gain of 13hp removing both the screen and stock airbox. Can't say what the amount the screen was responsible for since both where done at the same time. But a educated guess would be a 3-4hp gain.

My 03 Lesabre idled kinda noisily before doing this and now it is super quiet. I noticed also while trying to manually open the throttle that it would get stuck due to the buildup(didn’t really notice when using the pedal) and now it doesn’t get stuck. Amazing video! Mine would stall out if I sprayed it without opening the throttle(even a tiny spray) so as long as I opened the throttle a little bit I could spray this in there without it stalling.
Excellent video! My throttle body had a significant amount of carbon build-up so I just removed the entire unit to clean it up offline. After reinstalling I also did what you did to pull the cleaner through and help clear up some remaining junk. Also the mesh disc comes off very easily for better access to the throttle butterfly. Nice work!

You could also get a new throttle-body gasket, and remove the throttle body to clean it. That way, you would remove the egr crud from the back-side of the throttle plate. You are only spraying the front of the plate. I bet the back side still is coated with sticky black goo,

You gave me a bunch of info but what's your question? I guess I could assume what you would like addressed but it's best I don't. What specifically is your question?
I was wondering why my car was cutting off while I reved up the throttle body I didn't flood it. So I was hoping for a tip? I want to get enough cleaner to be cleaned as well for the IAC but I'm not sure I did. I it did help of what city was able to do.
There is a way but the screen isn't the only thing in the way. So, in my opinion, it's not worth it to take it off. If you want to clean the plate by hand then the best way to do that is to take the throttle body off.
My buddy put a small scratch in the mesh screen while removing the snorkle. He had never done this before and had a hard time so he pried it off. Should we have any concerns?
@@BarboursAutoHelp Hey Keith, I was just about to try this cleaning method and upon reading the instructions on the can of Throttle B cleaner, It say that it is not to be used on cars with a supercharger. Mine has one! Any recs? Thx
My 2000 SS monte wont stay running, it will start and stay running while i give it gas, but as soon as i stop it dies.. i removed the MAF and IAC for cleaning, but i snapped the heads off the t20 screws holding the IAC module in , so hopefully thats the issue
BarboursAutoHelp in a way .. the iac module fasteners got stripped .. so I had to drill and tap the bottom one for a fastener ..and it's only has one in it ..
BarboursAutoHelp then I don't have other option than work through the mesh my Pontiac Bonneville 97 has the same engine size Ok I'll follow up all your instructions in the video thank you your videos saved me a good money 👍
Well. You could take the whole throttle body off and clean it from the back side, but that would be a lot of work. Just make sure you get ALL of the intake cleaner off the mesh before you put your MAP sensor back in.
Are you using this spray: CRC 05078 Throttle Body and Air-Intake Cleaner Because in other videos explaining how to use that spray they don't spray much. Also, after spraying they dry it with a rag, so I'm afraid to spray it through the mesh and possibly leave it wet inside there. Any thoughts? I have a 93 oldsmobile 88, wanted to clean the valve while I was changing the air filter but didn't know removing the honeycomb mesh thing is almost impossible..
Got you, is the purpose of compressed air is to push the liquid out or just to make it evaporate faster? My worry is that the dissolved gunk might still sit behind the mesh if that makes sense? Just by changing air filter my vehicle runs much smoother so I'm really leaning towards trying the spray as well and I already have it.
I have a 2004 Century, low k/m's. And my son's Mitsubishi Lancer needs a TB (throttle body), which costs $1000 at the dealer, can you believe this modern BS that we have to take today. So the mechanic installed a used T-B $150, it failed, of course, so Saturday he will try another used one. Mitsubishi is more popular in Asia, but here in America, not so much.
You did see me take the MAF out of the throttle body before cleaning the throttle body right? The MAF goes into the throttle body and should be removed from the throttle body before cleaning.
You can take your honeycomb mesh screen off to clean inside better. There is an internal snap ring with a hole in each end that holds it in. Put a nail or something small in one of the holes and take out that end and work your way around until it falls out. Be careful not to damage the honeycomb.🙂

Because all problems I’m having seem to be what everyone is saying and my mechanic keeps telling me that my transmission is on its way out
Id listen to your mechanic. He's seen your vehicle and has probably driven it. He would know better than me.
Is it ok to just let mesh dry for a few hours instead of compressed air?
Its possible some of it will not dry all the way.
BarboursAutoHelp ok thank you just had my buddy drop off can of air
Does this work on a firebird 96
Very helpful. 2003 impala. Thanks! 🇺🇸😎
MERICA!
I have a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.8 what's the easiest way to put a heated throttle body back on mainly the two rubber water hoses
Are you having a hard time getting the water hoses on? What exactly are you having a hard time with? How so?
BarboursAutoHelp what are the length of the two rubber hoses that connect between the throttle body and the two metal water lines
Oh, I can’t recall. You may be able to buy a long section of that hose at the parts store and cut it to length.
Where can I find that socket?!?
I don’t have a t20 with a hole in the middle of the bit to remove the MAS so I literally used pliers lol
Hi, I started doing this but I forgot to wait 5 minutes. Anyway when I tried to spray while it was idling it cut off twice. I hot a little bit but not much. I still have over half a can left 2002 Buick Regal. Please advise 🤔
I later on after writing my first comment I got a scanner SC204 OBDII/EOBD. The codes that came up are P0102 P1035
I cleaned my TB now I have reduced engine power code and check engine light same car
Did you leave something unplugged?
thanks for the video helped out a lot was just wondering is there any way to remove that screen to get in there a little bit better
There is a way but the screen isn't the only thing in the way. So, in my opinion, it's not worth it to take it off. If you want to clean the plate by hand then the best way to do that is to take the throttle body off.
@@BarboursAutoHelp thanks
My buddy put a small scratch in the mesh screen while removing the snorkle. He had never done this before and had a hard time so he pried it off. Should we have any concerns?
I've done that before. I don't think you should have any problems. Only one way to know for sure. See how it drives.
@@BarboursAutoHelp Ok, Thanks. That is what I was thinking. I will see how it goes.
@@BarboursAutoHelp Hey Keith, I was just about to try this cleaning method and upon reading the instructions on the can of Throttle B cleaner, It say that it is not to be used on cars with a supercharger. Mine has one! Any recs?
Thx
@@mrt1626 Yes, I would not do it this way then. The best thing you can do is take it off and clean it off the vehicle.
Can u use carb clener
I would only use throttle body cleaner.
Can that in fit the rear wheel drive 3800 : )
Once you have to scream out of the throttle body you could get in there with a toothbrush And throttle body cleaner
Should i turn engine on to clean?
Not sure what you are asking.
@@BarboursAutoHelp keep car running than spray throttle body?
I think the video showed this didn't it?
@@BarboursAutoHelp thank you 💯
Champion. 🏆🎉 Thanks!
I would think a tooth brush could work good on the honey comb cover to clean it.
It’s not the cover that need cleaning it’s shat is behind the cover like the IAC and the throttle plate.
^what^
^what^
Hopefully be doing this one soon. Thanks so much!!!
Thank you for the video.
You're welcome
My 2000 SS monte wont stay running, it will start and stay running while i give it gas, but as soon as i stop it dies.. i removed the MAF and IAC for cleaning, but i snapped the heads off the t20 screws holding the IAC module in , so hopefully thats the issue
I hope so too. Where you able to get the screws out?
BarboursAutoHelp in a way .. the iac module fasteners got stripped .. so I had to drill and tap the bottom one for a fastener ..and it's only has one in it ..
I see. I hope it holds.
Exact problem I’m having on 01 Lesabre. Guessing this will work.
Anyone have stalling issues?
I have a 03 parkave i have to hold the gas down to start and when running it seems a lil idle high would this procedure help?
Yes it might. I had a 05 allure that would stall when starting cold. It solved the problem.
Hi, any chance I can approach you privately for help?
Thank you
I'm more than happy to help any way I can, but we can do it right here.
Can I remove that mesh looking honeycomb screen thing in throttle body?
You can but I wouldn’t. I had a pretty lengthy chat with another person about this below. Just scroll down a bit.
it's held on my a big snap ring kinda. Or at least it is on my 1997 Camaro.
Bad Ideal
isn't there any way to remove and reinstall that mesh for a better plate cleaning?
It’s very difficult to remove the mesh without damaging it. Plus if you do get it out you will not be able to reach the throttle plate.
BarboursAutoHelp then I don't have other option than work through the mesh
my Pontiac Bonneville 97 has the same engine size Ok I'll follow up all your instructions in the video
thank you your videos saved me a good money 👍
Well. You could take the whole throttle body off and clean it from the back side, but that would be a lot of work. Just make sure you get ALL of the intake cleaner off the mesh before you put your MAP sensor back in.
BarbursAutoHelp
Yes it's a lot of work , I'll just clean it I already have the cleaner stuff .
thank you
I’ve heard some people say it’s held in with a snap ring but you’d still have to use a pick to remove it
Can you use brake cleaner?
I don't suggest it.
Steve Phillips brake cleaner pops holes in rubber and plastic. Don’t want that anywhere but the brakes
I would not suggest it. Plus it won't do a thing about cleaning the throttle body.
What throttle body cleaner do you use? CRC?
I did in the video. But, CRC is not a sponsor and I'm not getting paid by them.
BarboursAutoHelp Just asking to make sure no special brand is required. Thanks!
Are you using this spray: CRC 05078 Throttle Body and Air-Intake Cleaner
Because in other videos explaining how to use that spray they don't spray much.
Ive got some good info in the description about it. It must be completely dry after cleaning. It’s achievable without a rag.
Would Maf cleaner work?
Not nearly as well.
👍
Thanks for replying!
Can you use CRC Throttle Body Kleen?
I have info in the description about what can be used.
Yes
Amazing!!!
You can't hydrolock a 3.8 from that.... can you? I though the engine had to be literally submerged for that
Yes, you can. It's hard to do but it's possible. Thats why I suggest a little at a time. Better to er on the side of caution ⚠️.
You can and the engine would be fine after doing it just pull all the plugs and turn it over dry or replace plugs and it'll fire up
genius! thanks
Tamper proof because the manufacturer doesn't want anyone but the dealership working on it.
Test
Ditch that mesh.
What's the point of the mesh
Gang busters ? 😂😂😂
I learned that from the streets... jk. Lol
You can take the screen off and reinstall it does only a clip holding it on
Why don't you just take it off ...
That's not your throttle body that's your MAF...
You did see me take the MAF out of the throttle body before cleaning the throttle body right? The MAF goes into the throttle body and should be removed from the throttle body before cleaning.
Can I use brake cleaner?
Negative.
