In the case of Morissette, her use of dynamics, build-up and progression, and the use of squeaks and growls, and the contrasts between her low, delicate notes and her belts, is to convey the story and message of the song, not just to sing it, but she lives up to the character and portrays the emotions, such as the "hopeful regret" you mentioned, and the pleading and desperation. She had a series of live performances released in the last couple of months that really show her mastery and versatility. Her voice is so gorgeous and i love this song so much!! i don't think you've ever reacted to Little Mix who are the original singers of this song but i really think you'd love them and especially their live singing which is fantastic and their acapella sessions... If you ever want to get into them i'd recommend their live of this song on "the search", or their cover of falling in the live lounge 💜
You did not notice the "vocal squeaks"... Not many singers can do that. It is a novel technique that, if done right, contributes to the overall quality of the performance....vocal squeaks can be done by singers who have full control of their "whistle note range"....not a lot of singers can do that.
