I swear, if given the opportunity, I would spend every waking hour on a lathe just turning one wand after another. I don't know if I would sell them for anything, but just the feeling of making a wand would make me feel like I am actually successful as a woodworker. I love the lathe, but because I've only been turning on the lathe for less than a few months, my skill level is low, but I have found a love for turning small and easy solid pieces like honey dippers and handles. I haven't gotten to bowls yet, and hopefully when I do, I'll actually be able to make something.
Steve Jones. My name is Justin Jones. A funny thought just occurred to me and I thought I'd grab you for a second and elaborate. It's about this peculiar sensation I notice after watching your work. I feel like a flightless bird watching another bird fly for the first time. "Dear God..how did he do that? Can I do that? Shoot, I'm gonna try that!" Fast forward to a skew chisel sticking out of the ceiling in my shop. Ha! What I mean to say is this, maybe you'll follow.. You don't know you can't do a technique that you never knew existed or was even possible. I look to your videos to show me there's more to learn. Watching the edge of your skew is much the same as watching an olympic caliber figure skater. Years of practice pushed to the very brink of disaster yet shrouded in grace. Where the skater balances against gravity you balance against friction. Your awareness of the lurking unused portion of the skew is nothing short of Jedi. Perhaps your next video will finally show you with your lightsaber? Anyway Mr.Jones, take it from me(Mr.Jones). Just knowing you exist makes me work harder every day. Knowing one of us can fly has me stretching my wings. You've changed my life for the better. Thank you. Many blessings to you and your loved ones in the coming year. 2020 is finally in the bin.
My son watches your videos which makes me very happy, and is already making some fine turnings as he learns how to use his small lathe. Wood turning is one of the most satisfying crafts because you see your work materialize almost instantly. One of the things I had to learn in wood shop back in 1966 was how to sharpen our tools and take care of them. This is a subject that should be a priority for all wood turners! To get the best results you need the sharpest tools!
Hello Sir, As you are an experienced in woodworking and I believe you are a busy person. Please I would like to request if you could lighten the world with your great skills by starting and making a series of lesson videos. Best Regards : )
Outstanding trailblazing video. With this instruction I should be able to use this as a fine basic turning training project with something left over to give to the neighborhood kids before Halloween. Thank You.
Steve, Its been a while but your latest video is most welcome. Your work is, of course, professional but it is also inspirational. Someday, I'll get to grips with skew work. Still trying at 71!
Thanks for the videos. I only started turning last year and am now trying to perfect the use of my skew, which I recently posted on YT. Stay safe, John
Nice. Great to see another video from you Steve. Would love to see more. I’ve just started wood turning and I’ve enjoyed all your videos 👍 cheers from Australia 🇦🇺
hi, nice to see back, I always enjoy watching you work. you make it look so easy. but of course it is not. looking forward to more of your videos. keep up the good work, it give us all inspiration , that one day we to will be able to do it like you.
Steve, So good to see your work again. I have missed it. I could watch you turn all day. Your skills make me want to be better as a turner. Thanks for posting.
These videos are excellent for learning turning-technique; this 3:29 is what I'm talking about. Not that I'm anywhere close to this level, but who of us know a Master who's willing to teach us how to turn ?
I'm glad to see a pro use a paper towel for safety....it helps me know I'm not being paranoid! Is the skew so short because you've sharpened it so many times, or is a short blade an advantage here in some way?
I think we all learn so much from you and aspire to even a fraction of your skill that any infuriation you impart; freehand or not will still be valued. Just glad to see you posting again
Steve just wondering at what included angle are you grinding your skew? What is your favorite brands of skews if I may ask? I've never seen anybody do the types of things you can with a skew absolutely amazing.
Great video Steve. Nice to see you posting here again. how do you like the Yorkshire Grit? That was the first time I can remember someone not using a sanding sealer first.
Thank you. I normally use sanding sealer and you heat a better, glossier finish but if the timbers good and dense it works well without for a more subtle sheen.
I tried practicing on a piece of rounded dowel and got a couple chips on my brand new skew chisel. Also no matter how long I held my skew on one spot it never cut all the way around it only got one spot. Any tips?
What skew? you should not chip a skew chisel. If it’s not cutting all round then the dowel is oval or it’s bouncing. Probably also not sharp. Most new tools need sharpening.
@@woodturner21 using my 1 inch skew like the one you have. Thinking I may need to sharpen my stuff because you rounded yours in seconds and mine took about 30 minutes using a piece of Granadillo wood
@@woodturner21 by the way, the wand you made is amazing. I certainly wasn't complaining. As for the holly tree, it was the favorite of the druids, who were tree worshipers. The holly was their most sacred symbol because it was sacred to mother Holle or Hel, the Norse goddess of the underworld. Cheers!
I'm always shocked at how well turned wands sell at craft shows. Nice job.
Thank you
You're absolutely right, the grain is incredibly stunning on this piece and the shine just as much.
Thank you

Enjoy the journey. Once you’ve mastered riding a bevel the progression to bowls is not as hard as you may think.

I like how he just ups with an enormous roughing gouge and Blamo, a dowel.

Hey Steve thanks for the time and effort. I also enjoy your channel on instagram. The finest work with a skew I have ever seen.

Hi Steve, Found you somehow, but glad I did. Great wand and some very very nice skew work. Have subbed and will look at your other videos. Cheers, Huw
Thank you
Great demonstration on using a skew. What wood was the wand made from please?
Thank you it’s English Ash
Masterful as usual.. Even my wife.. Who cannot stand wood turning, says your videos are mesmerizing! Would love to see you do one on sharpening.
Thank you I grind freehand so I don’t think a video on my sharpening would help

Awesome stuff Steve! Where do you get that "woodturning clothing"?
It’s from Lovell workwear
Nice work Steve
Thank you
Best turned wand I have seen on YT to date. Lovely.
Thank you
Magnifique, comme toujours!!
Thank you
Steve, when you coming to the states and give lessons? I sure would sign up. 😁
How many time have you sharpened that skew,? Not too much steel left. I hope one day to be half as skillful as you with a skew. Thanks for the videos.
Thank you A skew lasts me approx 12 months.

awsome piece!

Amazing. I would be terrified to rest my wrist on my skew in case a "skateback" or catch that would somehow end up with the tool opening up a vein.
Thank you, as always only attempt if completely happy you are able to do safely.
Мастер!!!💯💯💯👋
Oh yeah!! Fine fine fine.
Thank you
Please, sir. How long the wood should be? I am having trouble with my wands because the wood starts to vibrate. I don't know how to fix it.
If the wood vibrates you need to hand steady. Also slow the speed down slightly.
very nice grain it that steve tell me what you use to sharpen your tools with cheers Ian
I grind on an 8” ruby wheel 80 grit but have just converted to a 180 CBN
Love it, of course.
Thanks Perry
slightly off topic, if you were to buy a new wood turning machine today, what will you do
I wouldn’t change my Wadkin RS10

FYI: Holly is traditionally the best wood for wands. 😁

But then you have to go out and find a Dragon's Heart String to put in it! Too much work; and talk about a SKEW being dangerous!

Lol! It’s magical powers are only demonstrated when in the hands of a true wizard. So I’m unable to operate it to its full potential. 😜
