Minimum or maximum is not as important as giving them a CHALLENGING post where they are forced to interact with inmates and deal with conflict. Don't coddle them.

I started in a super max 23 years ago. Complete ad seg and det. It taught me the line between us. Established a good defense on the set up. I work a level 2 open bay setting now. I believe I am fair and just because of my experiences. I can have convos with inmates without crossing a familiarity line. I argue with admin quite a bit with putting fng’s in our level 2’s because they could be talked into being “friends”.

I think either way has advantages and disadvantages. When I first started I was posted in minimum but throughout the day I was jumping to medium and max so I got a good view of everything. Staying in one place could give the wrong impression to a new hire. In minimum they may not realize the more serious sides of the job but being just in max they may quit before experiencing the more rewarding parts of the job like seeing the transition of inmates before civilian life.

I just moved from working county the jail to state prison and they got me bouncing between medium dorms to max cell blocks. I'm getting Alil bit of both which is nice cuz my jail n prison are 2 different beasts

Maximum is very restrictive is very rote, very limited, and therefore what one can learn is reduced. General population requires the development of many more skills such as communication, discretionary decision making, mass movement, teamwork etc. I know that the max guys don't see it this way but to me death row, ad seg etc was an endless routine of feed, escort to yard, escort to shower, feed, repeat.

Remember. I am looking at first to create a foundation. An inmate’s mindset in a less restrictive area…maybe quite different then the mindset of those find in the highest levels of restrictions. I think it would be best …to start high..crests the foundation first then work our way through the routine …remember this is about creating a foundation at the highest of levels. If we do it the other way around …the officers default mode will be backwards. Imagine an officer working full min being moved to a max custody unit. I think the greater foundation starts with the most restrictive of practices because that is truly where the rubber meets the road.

That's the thing though, I can show all kinds of things to a rookie in gen pop. In max I can show them feeding, counting, escorting, lather rinse, repeat.. just my view!

@@russhamilton3800 I agree. But they need a strong foundation before they are introduced to your variety of expertise. If they don’t have the right foundation..their application will be weakened. Set the foundation strong and then teach them the magic

New boot here, read the new boot, if they aren't "ready" max, straight up get them use to the idea that these guys aren't all 100% out to murder you but still understand they're dangerous.
I was tossed into 2/3 pods with 35 inmates which wasn't too bad, but could be overwhelming for people not ready for that.
