Rather impressed with your determination to save money and have financial planning at such a young age. Most ladies especially men are usually in debt at this age as we seek instant gratification. Your step by step saving of each RM is inspiring and to share your personal journey in order for others to learn is admirable. My recommendation is to get rid of your family car which always breaks down and drinks like a horse and buy a Myvi instead. It is a reliable car and has low mileage. Repair cost over RM 10K is heart pain
Great sharing and I really appreciate the transparency. It indeed set a good example for many young Malaysians to develop and work towards their financial goal.
Kudos to your courage for sharing your personal journey, both good and bad. You've come across as a genuine human being. Wishing you all the best as you continue to fulfill all your goals!
Thanks for the video! Gotta love the 'finance' reference haha😂😂 How old are you? You are very wealthy for me at least! Just 5 years into saving and investing and you already have a really high net worth! 👍👍
Thanks! I love "finance" haha. I'm 29 :) I do feel very thankful for what I have, the beginning always seems slow but compounding really works wonders after some time
I am also an aggressive investor so I understand your points when it comes to investment. Because we are still young so time is our advantages. But be careful and consider risk management. Goodluck on your journey!
Thanks! I wouldn't say I'm super aggressive, most of my allocations are fairly conservative. It's only crypto that's on the risky side, but still less than 15% allocation :) good luck to you as well!
Hi Swan, that's really great video . I have been started to lean more about investment , savings , and your video is a great motivation to move forward .
Very good! I've got a very similar plan and mindset to you, though I'm a lot more years down the line. Keep it up, put in as much as you can, spread your finances across a lot of investments and keep them in well managed low fee funds. In 20 years time I think even you will be surprised how much it all adds up to.
Thank you for willing to share out such personal information to us, really appreciate your intention of helping us learn together from your experience , subbed your channel and liked the video🙏 One question i have is how did you even manage to find a place to live alone with only Rm750? Thats pretty cheap actually 😮
Tx for your reply. I took a long break from corporate job. This video helps me to go back to be on track a bit. Keep it up on your channel it has helps me a lot
Thanks for sharing this Sara! Love how u shows n explain on ur allocation in active trading even though it may/may not give higher return compared to passive investment- it’s to enjoy the FIRE journey anyway! PS: the dog is sooo cute!
Hiya, thanks for the suggestion, might consider it in the future :) in general I think the prospects are good, since the role is pretty future proof. Like any other role, its easy to stand out if you know your stuff
Really inspiring video! Hope to reach a similar 5-year goal as you. I'm curious with your 6- month emergency fund, where do you keep it? Is it in Stashaway and Versa? Mine is currently in a fixed deposit but I'm wondering whether those could potentially be an option. Also just wanna say thanks, your videos helped me learn so much about the options for investments in Malaysia and I love how detailed you go into them in your analysis. All the best in your FIRE journey!!
Thank you so much, I'm glad it was helpful :) I keep most of it in versa and some in cash, versa MMF has many advantages over FD and I've been using it as a temporary hub to store all my cash, since withdrawal/deposit is quick and easy.
Congratulations for being able to save and invest so well even thru the pandemic. Perhaps a good idea is to have your financial planning goals set out first and work towards your retirement plan, begin with the goals in mind. Using the SMART acronym to work out your short, medium and long term goals. Then work out what it takes financially to work out those numbers using a timeline. All the best for 2021-22!
Hello, thanks so much and that is exactly my framework! I have 5 year goals planned out and annual stretch goals, and back calculated the required savings rates and ROI to achieve them :)
@@SwanThinks haha its a true compliment.. Btw for could i know what type of ETF fund and crypto you have been investing if you are okay to share... Just curious hehe. Thank you
Most of my ETF is in the S&P500, with a smaller portion on leveraged ETFs. For crypto the main holdings are BTC/ETH and other holdings change around due to trading but mostly among ADA/DOT/SOL/AR/ATOM
Wow, your fresh grad's salary is almost double the amount of the offer I got, but R&D chemist does sound like a cool job! Still I think the two major takeaways for me from this video is frugal spending and setting up passive income. I spent too much on food whenever I'm in the mood for it and then feel guilty as hell afterwards. I really should stop doing that! I recently started investing in ETH on Luno (a few hundreds MYR) and Versa (also a few hundreds, after watching your video), here's hoping I'm doing the right thing Also loving the filial piety expenses, I call it family tax, but yeah I starting giving those to my parents since my first paycheck two years ago and happy to learn someone else is doing it too xD Anyway, thanks for advice! Subscribed and looking away to your future posts! Stay safe and keep on inspiring
Hello, thanks so much! yes I felt it was a good starting pay as well, and it was sort of my dream job to work in R&D :) definitely, in the first 3 years or so can't really see any passive income from investments, but slowly and surely it starts adding up which is exciting! But like you, food is now my weak spot :'D
A very great and helpful video for me as a university student. I get to see what the adulting expenses look like thanks to you :) I always hear recommendations to job hop every few years to get a higher pay. Did you get a significant pay jump after changing to a new job compared to the annual increment at the same workplace?
Glad it was helpful! Hmm I don't think that's always the case, imo if you actively work for a company's best interests as if you owned it yourself, your employer is bound to notice, if not, just be thick face and ask for a raise hahaha (that's what I did). If that doesn't work, then consider a move. Most important thing is to enjoy your work though otherwise it feels like a chore
Point on investing outside of MY is kind of on my mind too and wondering what is the best way to do it. When do you intend to move into property and gold?
Haha the current situation is very concerning. Well the easiest way is through etfs either direct or with roboadvisors. I do hold reits, I prefer the liquidity rather than being tied down by downpayment and mortgage. As for gold, I'm not really a fan haha so I won't be holding any
Hey Swan. Amazing content and transparency!! 🙌 Do you mind to share how to invest in S&P 500 ETFs please. Do consider making a video on it as well, please. Thanks heaps!
Hello, I'm currently using TD Ameritrade Sg for this but honestly I'm thinking of trying other platforms out. Will do one in the future, thanks for the suggestion!
Great job!! glad to see you gone a long way and good job on your net worth! you are doing very very well already! :) If you do decide to invest in the US markets, feel free to hit me up. always happy to discuss about investments!
Thanks for the video Swan, was your take on property ownership in malaysia? Do you plan to own a property in MY? if yes when? (based on your FIRE goal)
Heya, thanks! I personally don't love direct property ownership as an investment due to lack of diversification, low liquidity and high upfront and maintenance costs, I much prefer reits tbh. I do plan to own a property for own stay in the future, but only if the numbers make sense :) Current market rates still not attractive for me at my target location, I could rent at a fraction of mortgage cost!
In my opinion, she locked away all her asset and left with little cash. All her money already into market or locked with epf. That erased out future buying opportunity when market crash Anyways the figure probably is what she declared, she might have undisclosed asset lol To Swan, can you show us what stocks you are holding?
Hiya, even though the asset allocation is according to the platform (ie. Rakuten, Luno etc), for the actively managed ones, not all funds are fully invested, some accounts will have cash balances to take advantage of corrections :) no undisclosed assets outside of total. Haha its mainly blue chips, reits and tech - but I do change around every now and then
What do you mean by actively managed? What strategy is that? Can elaborate? For me, I still practice hold forever strategy, I buy once the price is low enough with mild amount, then diamond hands forever, that's the strategy that best suits me. I still not confident enough to DCA though. Thanks Swan
@@Cincololol It's anything that is not a passive DCA (meaning I either pick and choose stocks/crypto or do some sort of market timing using TA or both). No worries!
Care to elaborate more on picking and timing? I find it very difficult to monitor the price movement since I have my daily job and not very keen to open up my app to see the price. I thought of price alert but could not find one, or one that is free and reliable.
@@Cincololol its mainly a 2 step process - fundamentals research for securities selection, then technical analysis for entry, exit and monitoring the news. It's not super active, I do most of it at night or over the weekend, if I'm busy I don't look at all and it's fine since fundamentals are decent to begin with
If only I was as wise as you when I get as your age. Lol. My filial piety is always 10%, right from my first job. Even now after 22 years of working. Charity is also 10%. The rest are mine to spend.
Great video, Swan! Thank you for being so transparent about your numbers and experiences.
