I was ready to give it a chance, then cringing at it during the opening ceremony, then fully hating it after the cover incident in FP1. But the race itself was fantastic. So much overtaking, so much excitement. One of the best races of the year.

The opening ceremony was stupid. But at least it was entirely skippable. The people who suffer most are the drivers having to deal with it, but at least it wasn't shortly before the race like Miami.

@@JoePCool14 Yes it wasn't done right before the race. I don't feel the least bit of sorrow over the "suffering" of the drivers with the timing like the Vegas event. They don't get that money for those private jets because they drive fast; it's because folks are entertained by them. So they have to put up with fan event obligations and social media events; poor babies. Not.

Vegas has dealt a death blow to Miami! Considering that F1 made Miami a sprint race to try and increase revenue, shows that Vegas has become everything they wanted to be and more. I don’t expect Miami to stay on the calendar past it’s contract and we may be down to 2 US races. I’d like to see a race in Chicago or Indianapolis to replace it!!

Vegas and COTA are certainly much better than Miami. Miami should not have taken the lazy way out and built a track in a football stadium. If it was a circuit along the ocean it could have been great

I certainly thought it was a success. Of the eight F1 races I have attended in the last two years. I thought it was the best.
That being said everyone on Thursday should’ve gotten a full refund.
I agree about the paddock lighting. It was super dark.
They need to have some lower priced grandstands and general admission especially for Nevadans if they want to build Goodwill with some of the locals.
Also, they need to mount giant TV screens on the main grandstand above the skybox so that people in the Paddock club who paid $20,000 or more per ticket can actually see what’s going on. There wasn’t one TV there this year so all of the paddock club guests did not see the live action of the race if they were watching from the balcony.
As a race track, it was stellar. So much overtaking and passing opportunities. Very competitive track. Between the overtaking and the visuals it was stunning.

The Grand Prix weekend might have been an overwhelming success, but the weeks and months leading up to it and afterwards were dramatic. Many thousands cancelled their visit because of all the preparation going on.
When Vegas and the hotel operators do not tackle this issue, the race could have a short lifespan when the overall results do not increase the annual sales figures.
And is Vegas challenging Monaco? Not for a long time. Monaco is the oldest F1 race and has a rich history that is not quickly taken away. On top of that, other races are better contenders for Monaco's spot.
Take a look at Miami, for instance. That race and everything around I enjoyed more than Vegas (plus I got a sun tan for free and hotels were affordable)

I was there and it was crazy! It was definitely a success, the race was one of the best ones I have ever seen and the fact that every single hotel and business was giving their everything made it better. Las Vegas is an incredible place to have a race, specially at night, lets hope they stay for a while. Also, it is great for everyone that wants to get a free view of the F1 cars, great free views in many places, although you might need to do some research beforehand, next to the Cosmo at the end of the strip is the best place at turn 14, most of the overtakes took place there and no grandstands. In the end, the free view was the best view

I thought it was a fantastic race and it was rather cunty of the people who were rooting for it to fail.
If any race in the US should actually fail it should be Miami. Having lived in and a lover of Miami I can atest that North Dade County in not in any way Miami. Miami is a city not a county so it's not even like how the Long Beach GP for Indycar could technicaly be called an "LA race". No, North dade County isn't a ghetto but its definitely the boonies/stick/nowheresville of the region County, and it had garbage racing to boot.
There certainly were some blunders but I agree with Toto that the problems were Nothing in the grand scheme of things. Hiccups nothing more that can all, and should, be corrected.
It was esthetically beautiful and there was fantastic racing. Only a douchious Maximus could ask for more!

I was in the main grandstand and I enjoyed the event. Yes it was expensive, but I think we ended up having the best possible seats for the race. We were in the center and had a great view of the track and the pits, and could also clearly see the screens. People in the Skybox said they had to stand the whole time, and if you didn't get a spot right up against the railing they couldn't see the track. People in the paddock club complained about having to stand, and they couldn't see any screens. Apparently the Mirage and Bellagio grandstands had screens, but no audio. I would like to go again, but I would also like to see tickets cost about half as much. I think without support races, they also need to do more stuff between the sessions. Race day was fine, but between the other sessions there just wasn't a whole lot to do. The Sphere area had a lot of concerts, but the main grandstand area didn't have much aside from the short driver interviews and some photo spots.

This turned out to be the one weekend of the season that I was travelling so I watched the race in a hotel room on my laptop. Just re-watched it again and it is right up there with Singapore as one of the top two races of 2023. Funny how a lot of folks disparage street circuits, but this year they produced the two best races. Not all street circuits need to be as boring as Monaco. I loved the opening ceremony, too; sorta like Super Bowl Halftime. It was good to be earlier in the weekend and not right before the race like in Miami and Mexico.
'sounds like even Max had a bit of a change of heart. Of course his public persona is to be the Brusque Dutchman, and that's not gonna change. IMO it's a bit silly to complain about looking like a clown when they race in suits covered with gaudy corporate logos; don't they always look like clowns?

I had no idea what part of the track the cars have been at, but ig that's a problem with any new circuit tbf

The welcome ceremony/show was full of eye-roll moments and I hope they don't do that again. But the race itself was a banger. I look forward to next year. Whether the race lasts for the long term will depend a lot on placating the locals. I was in Vegas in June, when preparations had already started, and I hear that things are still not back to normal yet at the end of December. Locals and visitors at other times are going to make an even bigger fuss if the disruptions again last months for a four night event.

I was excited that F1 was going to Las Vegas. My friend and I like to go around the US seeing races but when we saw the absolute price gouging that the F1 and all the Casino resorts were asking… no thanks. And at that point I could care less if the Las Vegas F1 was a success.
And if the F1 is planning on doing this every year… Las Vegas better do a better… FASTER job of constructing and de-constructing the facilities.

They’re not planning on doing it every year. Bringing the pavement up to F1 standards was a one-off

The track in its entirety was completely within the unincorporated town of Paradise and not Las Vegas itself. Wouldn't that mean F1 was negotiating with Clark County and not Las Vegas to work things out? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise,_Nevada

Wetter it was a financial succes or not I just don't like what this event represents, F1 as a entertainment producer and investing things like construction of the pits and other structures. But that's just my personal opinion.

Was it a success? It seemed everything that happened off the track was bordering on or literally humiliating. The racing, the sport part, seemed very good.

Thanks Kym. Vegas was an exciting race to watch and much more interesting than Monaco. How would you determine if it can overtake Monaco as F1’s jewel in the crown? Revenue? Spectator numbers? Something else?

Boring? Monaco qualifying was the best of the year. It's driver vs track and it's unique. I honestly never want to see it leave the calendar.

Once the Drive to Survive crowd took over F1 the legacy fans were doomed. Vegas had it's chance and failed; F1 should never have gone back. F1 used to have my attention every race weekend; now with it's new direction I am closer to being done completely. The cars suck, the new tracks suck, the drivers suck, the commentary sucks, the entertainment is fabricated and barely exists on track. IIRC the Indy race at Mid Ohio in '18 had 110+ passes on track for position, but I am sure Vegas saw a lot of passing. Ohh wow, I see Max won. Couldn't have predicted that outcome.

I think you’re being disingenuous here. You have a lot of money. Talk of $100k chips on the tables. Rich celebs. You have to remember that Liberty Media’s entire original claim to want F1 was that it was too exclusive and too much for the rich, and that they wanted to make the whole thing a lot more fan-friendly and accessible. The Vegas GP was the complete opposite of that. Go and talk to the smaller stores and shops - not just the MGM resorts. A lot more of them lost their shirts that weekend than you reported on. Poor sight lines from the Strip grandstands, horrendous ticket prices, idiotic room prices. For a true F1 fan, this was a complete lockout and to us, it looked like the rich celebrating the rich and screw everyone else. I’m sorry but I think you and the rich and the mega resorts are the only people who really think this was a success.
Liberty media need to u-turn on this policy of hyper exclusivity or they’re going to kill the essence of F1 and it will just become celebs and the ultra rich who can attend, and none of them will have any idea why they are there.

The cold ended up helping he teams that overheat their tires, without that I think the race wouldn't have been as good. They got lucky, the rest of it is a shit show. Oh Europe gave a shit about the broadcast time? We've been pretty much screwed in Hawaii forever, we watch recordings for the most part.
