  • Oktoberfest is a world-famous beer festival held annually in Munich, Germany. It typically runs from mid-September to the first weekend in October, attracting millions of visitors from across the globe. The event celebrates Bavarian culture, with a special emphasis on beer brewed according to strict German purity laws. The festivities include traditional Bavarian music, folk dances, and hearty local foods like pretzels, sausages, and sauerkraut.
The festival grounds, known as the Wiesn, feature large tents where guests enjoy liters of beer served in steins by servers dressed in lederhosen and dirndls. The event kicks off with a grand parade and the official tapping of the first keg, followed by days of live entertainment, carnival rides, and family-friendly activities. Oktoberfest is not only a celebration of beer but also a display of Bavarian heritage, with attendees often wearing traditional clothing and participating in the lively, festive atmosphere.
While Munich is the original and largest Oktoberfest, cities worldwide now host similar events, celebrating the festival’s rich history and cultural significance.

Went to Oktoberfest in Heidelberg a couple of years when I was stationed there with the American military - loved it as well as the people I was privileged to call friend.

That sounds like an amazing experience! Did you get a chance to try any traditional German food while you were there? Oktoberfest is famous for its delicious pretzels, sausages, and of course, the beer. 🍻 What was your favorite dish?

@@CityViewtours - Serving three separate tours in [what was then] West Germany with the US Army, my family and I actually lived in several German municipalities to include Kirchheim, Schweinfurt, Heidelberg, and Mannheim.
Our daily life included not only eating in German establishments but also doing a lot of our shopping in German owned stores. We were fully immersed in German life as much as a 'foreigner' could be, and yes, it was an amazing experience.
There was simply too many good things to eat from simple brotchen (German bread rolls) to Schweineschnitzel (German Schnitzel) as large as dinner plates, to be able to name a 'favorite'!
Best memory: sitting on the banks of the Neckar River with friends during summer with bottles of wine, bread, cheese, & sausages watching the tour boats glide up & down the river.
