Update on Koko and her Kittens (2018)

- Koko has taken care of many kittens, and helped raise them to become healthy cats, over the years. Yet, she continues to start over each time with as much enthusiasm as she had when she first adopted "All Ball" (who she named) 30 years ago. See how she's doing with her latest feline friends, Ms. Gray and Ms. Black, whom she adopted only a couple of years ago. Koko has become a role model for both interspecies communication and empathy.
Fortunately, she is not unique - all gorillas have the same intrinsic capability to gesture meaningfully and care about others who are often quite different than themselves. This observation has the potential to save all endangered great apes, and to enrich our relationships with them in captivity!

+Chloe Gallardo Are you sure about that? If Koko was in any way as dangerous as "Lenny", they wouldn't let her keep kittens for pets, would they? After all; in "Of Mice & Men" Lenny killed all the mice (& the puppy) he got, but Koko looks after her kittens very well ... which is a BIG difference. I'd say a hug from Koko isn't any different than being hugged by a larger-sized human (& she would probably be somewhat gentler, too). I'm pretty sure she hugged Robin Williams at one point, anyway... 😅

I remember when Robin Williams got to visit with her-it was wonderful to watch! I also dimly remember seeing her when she was much younger, and not fully grown yet...she is so fun to watch, and such a gentle lady! God bless her!

Koko had a wonderful half human half gorilla life - but still lived in captivity so koko couldn’t really experience her own family 😢
really! if she had would she be this friendly with kittens? i hear gorillas are wild and would tend to eat cats if not tamed like this. I dont think she would have been a cat nanny with her real family

I hope Dr Patterson is getting on with her life after the death of sweet , adorable, KoKo.. Thanks too her us humans were able to see that Gorillas show an entire range of feelings..Good and bad days, empathy, laughter, and at times mischievous behavior... Thank you Dr P. Patterson for recording the life of Koko... RIP

Most amazing to see the friendship
The moment she asked to have a cat put on her head I knew she was just like me. The comment at the end about all gorillas being “kokos” is so important to remember. She’s one of the only gorillas treated like she has emotion just because we taught her how to communicate it to us through our language. It’s not just gorillas. We need to be viewing all animals as “kokos”. We really are not as special a species as we may have thought

Has she ever met a human baby?
I saw a clip of Koko when she met a human baby. The baby belonged to a woman who had been one of Koko's caregivers when she was pregnant. Koko pointed to the woman's stomach and then to the baby. She was happy to point out and sign to Penny that the baby used to be inside the mommy and now was here :) It was so cute!

Veggie Soup i am not sure, but i remember she had requested for a baby gorilla before. I think they redirected her to baby kittens because it wouldve been to complicated to give her a baby
I remembered koko playing with dolls before.. She was obsessed with dolls until she decided to have a "baby gorilla" but, I think.. She can't have a baby? Or she just don't want to breed? I can't remember.. Then her caregivers gave her kittens instead since she loves kittens too.. She pointed out the 2 kittens she loved and communicate with the humans through sign language..
