- I happened into the area when I was researching the Saratoga Springs Race Course, its relationship to airports in the area, as well as the presence of healing springs, railroad, and once upon a time, there was a trolley-car line as well as a "Fort Saratoga."
I am going to take a tour of the locations of historic star forts and places where there were trolley parks of a by-gone era in Eastern New York, starting at the southern end of Lake Champlain and heading directly south along the Hudson River Valley into the Upper and Lower New York Bays in this video.

There is a short film about the trolleys of the late 1800s to early 1900s. It was reported that you could go by trolley from Boston through Albany all the way to Chicago with only one small gap in transport around Gloversville, NY. This was not by train (which did run on this route),mind you, but by trolley. He said it could be done as a theoretical exercise which would take over a month. This is how developed the local and regional trolley systems were at the time.
Very interesting video. I grew up near the Hudson and frequented many of these places.
I've seen old trolley routes in boston. those things use to go everywhere and your right the train ended up replacing some of the ones that didn't get destroyed or now the buses use those same routes.
when i come across historical info about our local trolley and interurban railways around SW IN., there was some very nice little mini railways going between major cities and even one company had a large ferry built with rails where they could drive the entire unit onto and take it across the Ohio river and reconnect up to raillines for city on other side and then it continued on around a network over there.
but the rubber and oil companies killed all the interurban railways by pushing combustion engine busses.
I am incredibly impressed with your work and research. It's incredibly valuable especially right now in an era where it's become very obvious something is amiss.

Growing up in Bridgeport Connecticut… I have been to many of these his(storical) sites, parks, lakes, amusement centers. I was born 1958 and my father was a musician so we as a family were well acquainted with all you spoke of here. Even as a youngster … something was very strange feeling.. almost spooky , haunting and dark about all of it. Never felt comfortable even on the rides. Very strange. Thank you Michelle for your research. Brought back lots I forgot about and now want to remember. My parents are in thier late 80’s yet mentally sound. I will question them and show this video to them. I do remember walking on the rock jetty in seaside park to the lighthouse there in Bridgeport and having nightmares (reoccurring ) of falling between the rocks.

I used to live near Saratoga Springs in the 1970's and 80's. There was an Amusement park in that area called "Gaslight Village" an old town still run on gaslighting for street lamps, everything was Victorian era or older. I'm sure it had a trolley line? Also, an Amusement park based on the old wild west, which just looked like a preserved old western town turned into a "Park". Saratoga Springs always had a strange feel to it? My family would go bet on the "Ponies" lots of money won and lost. We would also bring jugs to fill with springwater that was near town. Thank you.

Wonderful journey thank you.. I lived in Phoenicia NY (yes Phoenicia) for about fifteen years.. just west of Woodstock (yes THE Woodstock lol).. One could spend a lifetime researching just the western side of the Hudson River from Kingston to Schenectady and only touch the surface.. The 'signs and wonders' of past times are too numerous to count as would be the amount of money that was spent in building (rebuilding) the area.. Your work is always amazing.. much gratitude.

I distinctly remember being taught that the Statue of Liberty was on Ellis Island, the pics of it showed it was on a pedestal base, and all the stories of immigrants seeing her as welcoming them to the USA, with the Emma Lazarus poem "give me your tired, huddled masses"/mother of exiles. It being on Liberty Island on an 11 pointed star (or hendecagram) is a "Mandela Effect" for me.

One time...as a kid...I swore I saw a mermaid near those rocks at Coney Island....that whole day was weird though...I almost got swept out to see later that day. For some reason...I just stood still in the water, facing the beach, and let the undercurrent take me deeper and deeper, before snapping out of it.
I had an experience of almost being swept out to see when I was a kid and visiting family in florida. I don't remember how old I was but I just remember playing in the undercurrent and getting further and further away from shore. And then a couple make sure I got back to my family on the beach. Wouldn't surprise me if they were angels!

Nice video, I live in the area of where the Orange Lake amusement park was. The trolley line did open in 1886, but it was only horse drawn and stayed in the limits of the City of Newburgh. In June of 1894 the line was electrified, and by the summer the tracks were out to Orange Lake. In 1903 the trolley company bought and expanded the amusement park, making it as you said, a premier attraction for miles around. When the trolley company went under in 1924, so did the amusement park. However, there were lawsuits; while the company owned the park, they did not own the concessions and rides. The park reopened around 1927, It wasn't quite as popular as it had once been, but managed to survive most of the Great Depression. And yes, it did close down in 1941 and a housing development now stands on the grounds. If one knows where to look along NY 52 between Newburgh and Walden, there are some remains of the old Orange County Traction Company to be found.

Michelle, you should keep moving down the coast. I'd love to see what may have existed in Pennsylvania and southern Jersey. I know there are many healing springs in Pennsylvania and the springs have something to do with this.. I'm in Delaware and live within one block of Brandywine Springs Park which was one of the trolley parks that included everything in the other parks. The springs are still running and if u know how to get to them, the water is amazing! My great grandparents rab a stand in that park and my grandmother spent her childhood there. I think you should take a look at this park, too.

Interesting about Clovis and Cannon! I lived next to Cannon in a trailer park for 5 years between 1989 and 1994.
I grew up in Texico and Clovis, my great grandfather was an engineer for ATSF Railroad from the 1920's until he retired, He was also very prominent in the Oddfellows order, as we're many railroad employees at the time. As teenagers we used to explore the old abandoned Clovis hotel, and underneath they used to have barber shops and all sorts of shopping, and yes there are tunnels that go all the way to the railroad Depot. In fact , Clovis used to be known a" little Chicago", because of the fierce wind, as well as the corrupt politicians.... It's an interesting town to explore, but honestly growing up there, we took all of these things for granted. Including Clovis man.
I'll also add that there WAS a star fort here in Santa Fe located at the near the Martyrs Cross that was the original Fort Marcy.

Hi Michelle, thank you so much for all the work you do. I find it amazing. Looking at all the amusement parks there used to be I started to wonder how people had such a fun time and enjoyed life to the fullest. Recently I came across some videos where the lady has this theory of 'what if we have come to the end of a golden age of a thousand years somewhere at the end of the 19th century and are now in a dark time?'. Somehow I find that it makes sense to me and explains the cover up and destruction of a glorious time.
