  • As a legacy to the 1911-2011 Calgary Planning Commission Centennial, "A Century of Vision," The City is currently developing a series of six short videos and corresponding teacher resources that are intended to instil in students an appreciation for and understanding of the city planning process and the role citizens play in realizing the vision for our community. www.calgary.ca/cpc100

Remember it very well. We moved from Montgomery to Haysboro in April 1958, and were the 4th house in that district. I went to St. Anthony's elementary school in Windsor Park that Spring and had to take a diesel feeder bus as the Elbow Drive bus loop was at 50 Ave. SW. and Elbow Drive south of there was a 2-lane gravel road. Our Keith built house cost our parents $11,000, and we didn't have paved streets or sidewalks for quite awhile. I remember the Separate (Catholic) school system allowed us to buy bus tickets for 5 cents each! South of Haysboro was lone prairie, with gophers, badgers, pheasants and weasels everywhere.

Sorry but the North Hill Shopping Center and the Chinook Shopping Center were not " Indoor Malls " until the mid 70's when they remodeled into Indoor Malls --- they were out door strip malls in the beginning . The Chinook shopping center was the Chinook Drive- In before and that was out of the city .

Chinook was a merger between two competing malls too... It really has a fascinating history seeing it evolve and change...

Calgary's historical growth is so well documented in photography. Ft. Calgary was on a fairly treeless spot, so you can see the growth, year by year, from the little fort, to the small town around it, to the initial city, all the way to the mega-city it is today. I am not sure there is another city that the growth is so clear and well documented as Calgary.

Came to Calgary as a young soldier in 1964 to Sarcee Barracks, a brand new army base housing the Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). All gone now. Nothing but an ugly native casino there.

It's a shame the new owners of the Barron Building sought fit to demolish the Uptown Theatres because restoring them to their former glory would have made for a great centrepiece of action in that part of downtown... Alas...
