Thanks, maybe this is why my leather coral isn't doing well. I have it at low light low flow currently. It just happened to be where I put it. I think I'll move it!
Totally agree with you on this one! They do love high light! I had two leathers that were not thriving at all on the sand bed. Once I moved them upwards, they started to thrive right away! I'd even go as far as to say flow is secondary - once they have good levels of light!
Great video, I am glad I watched it been having troubles with a toadstool for roughly 6 months now. Never got full extension but maybe 1-2mm polyp extension. Just moved/glues the plug up top in high light(t5) and high flow so fingers crossed it opens fully lol
I agree with you 100% on all points , i have experienced the same in my 3 short years experience ..keep up the great work , nice touch with your little dude
i use to think the same thing till i got my toadstool. the only spot in my tank that it really likes is right in front of my circulation pump and under my hang on back filter. you would think the high flow would make it close up but no it love it and is always open to it fullest
My experience: High Light, High Flow. Also my experience: I don’t keep acros with leathers because it just doesn’t work for me. I understand that the leathers send out some neural toxin that kills the sps corals because my other tank (which is sps dominant) I have no problems in there.
Thank you for the info. I am having that same problem right now ; I just lost a huge colt coral ; The other one is falling apart because of my led box.I just lost my white lights .
Yes!! 100% I have my pumps set to run really high for 1 minute every five minutes, and only flow when calm is the return pump. Seems to be a nice balance for health, and also view pleasure/increased coral expansion. Most are getting BAKED under a 400w halide. Like 18" below the bulb
How do you get ozone in your tank. I have a toad stool and koji wada in my 36 with a nunchof new lps and worry that they will killl my other corals! Love your tank! How many gallons? Its huge!
Is a kenya tree a leather? i received 12 frags two weeks ago and the only one doing doing poorly is the neon kenya! It has yet to rise up. I had it at the bottom of a nuvo 20 so maybe thats why. I have moved it up to mid way to the top and still no change. Should I count him out? Still looks good color wise it just stays slumped over like they are when lights first come on. Ihave a koji wada and its doing fine at the bottom of a different tank! I have a strip light by aquatic life so maybe the par isnt strong enough in the nuvo 20
Awesome video Scott!!! Love the info bro and much agree with you!!! My honey dew sized toadstool loves the high light and loves the flow....I've heard that too over the years low light , little flow..but I beg to differ mine just BANGS at the top of the tank and sits in front of my wave maker....
I would not be surprised if his levels were really low. Once leathers get big, they will absorb a LOT of nitrate and phosphate. I've had tanks with huge leathers and no matter how much I fed, both PO4 and NO3 were barely detectible. The more I fed, the more they grew, but concentrations didn't change. Can't speak for his ALK, but I don't think it matters as long as its consistent.
I've also found that my leathers never do the stuffing like other people say theres do but I keep them in high flow and high light. Have toadstools and devices hand.
Would a foxface lo rabbitfish get along with my hippo tang and Christmas wrasse in my 80 gallon? My hippo loves swimming with other fish but I’m afraid the foxface will think it’s beating on it, sorry thanks!
My leather keeps bending side to side & front to back can’t seem to get him happy atleast I don’t think it’s happy polyps are out but he’s not up right 😅
This dude is the Mr Rogers of reef keeping. Just love it! Good stuff👍.

Absolutely noticed the same thing with leathers. Great video!

I love your videos. Every bit makes sense and my reef is thriving!

You tank looks so much better since you upgraded your lights!!!
I noticed mine doing better up high and by my gyre totally agree thanks for pointing that out for me 😊
I’m here because I tried to clean my boyfriends tank and after that, his leather corals shriveled up for a while😬 thanks for the information!
Tank looking great Scott great video quality information thanks for sharing

Needed this today thanks brother Scott!

J'adore les coraux mous ...
Glad I got here. Always a go to. My Kenya has been so out of it. I gotta switch its placement.
i feel the same good video 👍🏻👍🏻

Thank you Scott!! My leather is laying down needs help
Just curious.. I know this is an old video but what do you keep your Nitrate, Phosphate and ALK at for soft corals?
I would not be surprised if his levels were really low. Once leathers get big, they will absorb a LOT of nitrate and phosphate. I've had tanks with huge leathers and no matter how much I fed, both PO4 and NO3 were barely detectible. The more I fed, the more they grew, but concentrations didn't change.

I'll try to move Oragreen Toadstool to the top and update info.
I've also found that my leathers never do the stuffing like other people say theres do but I keep them in high flow and high light. Have toadstools and devices hand.
Love your videos you are always so knowledgeable !
These corals live in shallow and turbulent waters that is why they really need high light and flow.
nice, now how about a video on ricordea yuma?
Thanks . Quite a surprise .
P.S.
Your take on ozone would be super interesting.
And how about the lettuce leather coral, whats the ideal conditions to them? My lettuce are very bad, they are in the bottom and they doesnt look good
Would a foxface lo rabbitfish get along with my hippo tang and Christmas wrasse in my 80 gallon? My hippo loves swimming with other fish but I’m afraid the foxface will think it’s beating on it, sorry thanks!
I noticed it also!!! Great video.
I have a leather in my sps tank.. never seen it shed and it only just GROWS
Tank looks sweet
You specify high flow but the video shows little flow. I’m a beginner so please be gentle with your response.
Great information, I better take your advice, my devils hand hasn’t opened for six months.
Totally agree!
Nice video enjoyed watching :)
High light high flow
People don’t realise leathers come from extremely shallow water.
These corals are the most easiest to keep.
My leather keeps bending side to side & front to back can’t seem to get him happy atleast I don’t think it’s happy polyps are out but he’s not up right 😅
I have a nephthea
If you could only choose one of high light or high flow which would be more important?
I'd say high light. It will adjust easier to the flow given.
I nuke my leathers with 6 t5 bulbs. They love it.
Hi guy
