They're picked up by microphone and broadcasted live every single night, rather than just playing a recording, and you know, strangely, with how the way sound travels, you'll actually hear the bells on the radio before you hear them from the actual tower, because the microphone is closer to the bell than your ear. It’s real, I shot this from across the river from the Marriott hotel. The sound carries much further at night when there is not as much activity and noise on the street.
As a former Londoner I can assure you that you can hear Big Ben striking from VERY far away under certain circumstances. On a particularly cold and clear day I've heard Big Ben strike the hour from Richmond Park, around ten miles away.
