Such good recs, Jen! One of my favs also is Hyacinth by Minerva Spencer/S.M. LaViolette, which I know you too enjoyed 🤩. For those who have not read it, I strongly encourage you to do so. The FMC is on the spectrum and disquises herself as a boy to play cards to earn noney to help her family. It also has a scared hero. It was one of my favorite books of 2023! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Such great recs, and so happy to see you promoting historical romance! Seriously, Booktok is HIBERNATING on historical romance. So many of the Romantasy books they love read like historicals (Divine Rivals, Blood & Ash series. etc.) and then there's the love for Bridgerton, Pride & Prejudice, etc. that makes it clear that people crave these sorts of stories. Also, as you said, there's so much variety within the subgenre: different time periods/settings, RomComs, darker more gothic books, character archetypes, and so on. A Mary Balogh historical romance is a very different vibe from a Tessa Dare histrom, but both are wonderful in their own ways and will appeal to a certain type of reader.
Thank you for doing this video! Been reading historical romance for 20 years now and will continue to be an avid fan. 🙌🏼 Some great authors folks should try are: Julie Anne Long, Amanda Quick, Joanna Shupe, Vivienne Lorret, Sarah MacLean, Loretta Chase, and Kat Martin to name a few.
I was actually on Tik Tok yesterday looking for HR recs. You’re totally right, Tik Tok is sleeping on historicals. It’s my favorite sub-genre. Started off with Julie Garwood 💙
Her Villain was SO GOOD!!!! The Duchess Deal was my gateway, I love gifting that book to my book loving friends. The Highway Man opened the floodgates for me though lol!!
I've either have read most of these or have them on my TBR to read! I guess that means I love your recommendations! I highly recommend "Night in Eden" by Candice Proctor. I know I've mentioned it before, but it is so good!
Well, it's a good start for many people. It's an easy read and relatively light hearted. Not sure if you were just joking or are trying to be snarky. It's hard to tell in text, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But there's no need to denigrate what other people love. 🙄 We don't do that at The Book Refuge. How about you share an HR that you DID like? 🥰
Love this video. We need more historical romance. I went to my Barnes and Nobles today and they had the tiniest shelf for historical romance. I was so annoyed
Historical romances will always be one of my favorite genres to read. 💜💜💜
Agreed 😊😊

I will read historical romance forever and always over contemporary romance. It just hits different for me on a personal level.

You can’t go wrong with Beverly Jenkins she has so many good stories 🎉
I have read some historical Romans before, but I wanna try to read more next year.

The Wallflower Wager (SO funny and cute) and Any Duchess Will Do both by Tessa Dare. Highly recommend!!

Hey Jen do you have a historical romance TBR for 2025😊
Oh man, I’ve read The Duchess Deal years ago and it was…..ridiculous 😆
