These magnificent buildings from the early 20th century are vestiges of the wealth and power of Argentina. It was the richest country in the southern hemisphere and by GDP it was between the 5th and 10th richest country in the world. Argentina's GDP was equivalent to that of the entire rest of Latin America including Mexico and Brazil. Buenos Aires competed with New York for the number of European immigrants. 6 million arrived from Italy, France, Spain, Russia, Germany, Ireland, England, Türkiye, etc. Buenos Aires became the largest metropolis in Latin America. It was the capital of an empire that never existed. Today, one hundred years later, with the Milei government, we seek to return to that old splendor. Make Argentina Great Again.

Hello! The Water Palace is literally a water tank!
Centro Naval was constructed for the Navy. It used to be exclusive to them, and they would use it for weddings, ceremonies, socializing, etc., mostly for higher-ranking members but not exclusively. Additionally, whenever a historic day took place, politicians and even presidents would go there to hold the ceremony.
Nowadays, it still belongs to the Navy; however, it hosts activities open to the public.
Still, it has always been a social club.

Buenos Aires' architecture is 95% post-colonial (=after the independedence from Spain in 1810) mostly from the turn of the century (late 1800s-early 1900s, the "Belle Epoque" of peace and prosperity before the two world wars).
The city only grew massively at that time with the sudden arrival of millions of immigrants from Europe (much like it happened at the same time in the US, Canada, Australia, etc). At that time Parisian Beaux Arts architecture was the international fashionable style, as seen also in the US where millionaires or municipalities adopted it for many public buildings.
(in contrast, Spain had no such fashionable reputation then, it was then mostly perceived as picturesque but backwards with its exotic bull-fights, gypsies, Moorish or Medieval Catholic sacred architecture etc and therefore Spanish architects were not internationlly on demand).
That being said, among the millions of immigrants arrived from Europe in those years to Buenos Aires (6 million not counting temporary migrantion, the majority from Italy followed by Spain) there were of course many architects, so in a way buildings in BA were ALL built by Europeans! But yes, a few famous architects were hired directly from France etc.
Another style, "Historicism" (imitating different historical styles from Gothic to Baroque to Medieval Romanesque etc) was also in fashion - and yes, also Spanish Neo-Colonial style as the one seen in California or Florida's mansions etc: pixels.com/featured/santa-barbara-california-fabulous-spanish-colonial-revival-architecture-georgia-mizuleva.html
was also popular - one prominent example in BA (among hundred of others in public or private buildings) is the ICBC headquarters at the corner of Florida and Diagnoal Norte. But the architects of Spanish Neo-Colonial were not necessarily Spanish immigrants (much less hired directly from Spain) it could be anyone as it was just a style then in fashion.
During colonial times (before 1810) Buenos Aires was barely a village of mud streets some 10 x 10 city blocks large (it was mockingly called "The Grand Village" ("La Gran Aldea") with less than 20.000 inhabitants as you can see on this map: i.pinimg.com/736x/40/11/96/401196892af9117207b876e4a93a87d8.jpg - surrounded by the endless empty Pampas, the land of the solitary Gaucho who did not built towns but lived isolated on the plains (all cities in the Pampas were also built post-independence - you can imagine how the arrival of 6 million + immigrants in the late 1800s and early 1900s changed everything in the city and the country. Buenos Aires is therefore almost entirely as I said a "turn of the century" city.
There were no grand buildings during colonial times in BA - the most important one being the Cabildo (the Town Hall - later our "Independence Hall" as the May Revolution of 1810 started there) which as you can see is extermely modest, like the rest of the whitewashed mostly one story dwellings of the time: www.infobae.com/new-resizer/iwKmZzo-VKR5pIyc4Zq-35cDVRY=/arc-anglerfish-arc2-prod-infobae/public/5HLR64PHDBA4LC3PTJAJ6VFBLY.jpg
This was because for Spain Buenos Aires was just a remote deserted distant outpost like Alaska, with nothing of economic value or large populations to be concerned about. The territory of Buenos Aires consisted only of an endless sea of grass (the Pampas) useless for the Spanish conquistadores of South America who (unlike the British settlers in North America) were not looking for arable land to begin a new life in the New World, but only for "El Dorado" - the fabled city of gold and silver with fabolous riches, which they found in American territories with large civilizations like the Inca, Azted of Maya (you can see their obsession with the precious metal in that they named Argentina "Land of Silver" (=from ARGENTUM=Silver) our river "River of Silver" (=Rio de la Plata) etc - only to be dissapointed as they found none of those riches (the legend says that they asked the scattered indigenous hunters and gatherers they found at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata where was the gold and silver, and they pointed up river (indeed they would have to travel thousands of miles up river and beyond to Bolivia and Peru to find those treasures!)
That is why you will find the great Spanish Colonial cities in the lands of the former Inca, Maya or Aztec lands (Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, etc) or the Caribbean (Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dom. Republic etc) from where they shipped their precious metals to Spain. There can find the magnificent Spanish Colonial architecture from the 1500s and 1600s (the original - not the mock Spanish revival of the 1920s you can find in California, Miami, Buenos Aires😊) with grand cathedrals full of silver and gold - not much of which is to be seen in Buenos Aires! (even our modest colonial churches got a Parisian facelif when Buenos Aires prospered - like the facade of the Cathedral you visited, after the church of La Madeleine in Paris).
As mentioned, Buenos Aires only grew exponentially in size (and Argentina grew economically) at the end of 1800s and beginning of the 1900s, when the Industrial revolution had invented the tractor, the railways, and refrigerated cargo ships to Europe etc - so suddenly the vast empty Pampas previously useless for the Spanish Empire became overnight the "breadbasket of the world" (feeding Europe through two World Wars) but by then Argentina was independent from Spain. Millions of immigrants from Europe pouredi in then seeking a prosperous life in the New World (in fact Argentina was only second in the world to the USA in the number of millions of immigrants received at that time). Soon the meagre architectural colonial heritage (those two dozen city blocks of whitewashed one or two stories houses) was razed to the ground (you can count with your fingers the number of actual colonial structures still standing, mostly in San Telmo) to build Parisian style boulevards, parks, etc and public buildings like the train stations, government buildings, post office, customs, etc (the British built the rail stations and tracks etc, and most of the one or two stories tennements seen in San Telmo and elsewhere built in that era follow the model of Italian cities of the times).
After independence from Spain there was also a strong element of rejection for Spain and all things Spanish - Argentina's independence (won with effort against the Spanish monarchy) was inspired by the French and American Revolutions, and the new country modeled itself on the example of modern democracies and capitalism like the USA or France - whereas Spain remained associated with the ancient regime of monarchy, religious superstition and medieval backwardness (specially in the minds of Argentinians) until late in the 20th century (when Spain finally ended the dictatorship of Franco). Millions of poor illiterate Spanish immigrants arrived to Argentina from the poorest region of Spain (Galicia) during the mass migration did not help to improve the backward stereotype (Spaniards in general in Argentina are nicknamed "gallegos" (i.e. "from Galicia") due to that majority coming from that region). If you've seen Mafalda's statue in San Telmo (the beloved cartoon character) next to her stands one of her friends "Manolito" (short for "Manuel" a traditional Spanish name) the son of a stereotypical "Gallego" - his father typically near-illiterate, brutish and only caring about $$$ (his son phisically resembles him with the spikey short hair, super thick eybrows, stockish build etc): i.pinimg.com/originals/1c/d1/61/1cd161471946420a3abcf808dcb2cb8d.jpg
So as you see there was not much appeal in Spain for Argentinians after independence. My own grandfather was a Spanish immigrant ("gallego") and when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s (I'm 64 now) everything related to Spain still had that backward negative connotation smell (Spain - together with Portugal, the South of Italy and Greece - remained the poorest countries of Europe until the creation of the EU, either ruled by dictatorships or by the Maffia). Also, as you may know, children of immigrants mostly want to distance themselves from the culture of their ancestors (forced upon them by their parents) specially if that culture is perceived as backwards (teenage children of immigrants want to blend in with the local peers!) and this is exactly what happened with my own parents while they were growing up in the 30s and 40s - and to millions of other "porteños" who were children of immigrants (up to 90% of the population of BA during the last century). You can think of the children of Italian immigrants in New York or New Jersey for example (like Michael in "The Godfather" saga😁).
Re. the Naval Club, indeed it is an exclusive club for members - but they have opened up their restaurant for the general public - it's just that everyone's perception is that it must be extra-expensive, and so nobody walks in (like myself)! But thanks to your video I just learned that it costs actually $ 11,000 for two "cafe con leches & medialunas + jugo de naranja" (the typical breakfast at any cafe) which is the same or even less than what you would pay elsewhere! So definitively I will go there myself one day, thanks for the tip to a local😁!
The "ass burner hot sauce" is purely an invention of Gerrin for foreign tourists (I guess Mexicans, Asians who always miss spicy food?) No Argentinian would ever dream of adding any kind of sauce to top their pizza (they'd said you just ruined your pizza) much less a spicy hot sauce!
I hope you can continue ejoying your stay in Buenos Aires! Love to see the research and detailed information you try to provide in all you show, and for me it's a pleasure to fill in holes!

Argentina usted to be a poor Spanish colony named Virreynato del Rio de la plata Until the middle of the nineteenth century Bs As was just a hamlet At the end of the of the century a group of politicians and intellectuals called la Generación del ‘80 ,transformed the country and Buenos Aires in a great metropolis in a few decades In that times Paris was the inspiration in terms of art and architecture That’s why the city has so many French style buildings At the same time Agentina received more than 6 millions of European immigrants since 1860 to 1930 that also brought there culture That’s the reason the city has such an European atmosphere

No Argentinian would ever put any sauce on a Fugazzeta or any flavor of Argentine pizza, only oregano is put on it (and not always) but sauces or oil mmm NO...They must be there because of the foreigners who come and usually ask for it.

Brasilians put ketchup on it and cut it up on their place and use a fork to eat it
People from the US don't put anything ON it and they pick it up in one hand and feed it into their mouth

    • @global_citizens
      @global_citizens  5 днів тому

@@InMyBrz Yes I personally prefer a mix of both 🤣🤣🤣
I’m very foodie so I don’t have patience to eat and for the video we wanted to be polite and cut the pizza with knife and fork, but my real version would be a good hot sauce and then picking up the slice of pizza by hand and just eat it.
Also, being married to a Brazilian I have learned that in Brazil there is a general unwritten rule that you should not touch your food with your hands 🤷🏻🤷🏻
So the rules are really all over the place 😂😂😂
Hope you are doing well and enjoying your holidays

At the beginning of the 20th century, 16% of immigration was French. Among them, for example, Pablo Hary, a key figure, director of the architects' association, was French but arrived in Argentina at the age of 6. Both he and many of the notable architects of the time (Bustillo, Thays, Agote, Le Monnier and others) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, which, at that time, led the field and imposed the academicist style.

Ohh wow, ok that explains a lot. That’s why there is so much French influence when it comes to the architecture in the city.

NO!! Argentines would never put sauces on Fugazzeta or pizza!!!...that's a crime!!!. That's in a pizza shop because tourists from some parts of the world ask for it, but it's not typical.

My problem is I love hot sauces so I am really craving for a strong hot sauce at the restaurants in Argentina 🤦🏻🤣 that being said, yes the pizza in Argentina is soooooo tasty and delicious that indeed we do not need to put a sauce on it.
