    You're Portuguese? Well, you'll fit just right on Kauai, lot's of Portuguese. In fact, some of my Portuguese friends parents still speak Portuguese (Azores dialect). They picked it up from their parents & grandparents who came to the island to work in the fields. I myself am not, but I did grow up on the Westside, St. Theresa School Class of 1984 & Waimea High School Class of 1988. Most of us are scattered all over Oahu & the mainland.
    Maybe you can do a video on job opportunities on Kauai. I know many former Kauaian's that would love to return home. You can contact the local Rotary Clubs on the island for direction & assistance.

    • @YourHostJ
      @YourHostJ  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Tito! My parents were born and raised in the Azores! I was born in America, but my first language was Portuguese (with the Azorean dialect 😂) and I still speak it today. My partner is from mainland Portugal and he always teases me and my family for our "accent". I said he's just jealous of how beautiful the Azores are and so he has to find a way to tease us 😝
      I know there are many Azorean people on island, but still have yet to find one who speaks Portuguese. I love knowing they do exist!
      They had a Portugal Day at the museum in Lihue a few years back and people were tracing back their lineage and learning about their Portuguese ancestors. It was beautiful and I felt so welcomed. Just talking story and eating malasadas. They taste just like they do in Portugal.
      I appreciate your recommendation and I'd love to help locals or former locals find jobs on island. There is an abundance! I made a video recently about finding jobs in general, but the same method could be used for finding local jobs. You can find it here if you want to share it:

      @@YourHostJ Hi J,
      My friends & the most, if not all, of the Azorean Portuguese's living on Kauai do not speak it. Their parents made it a point not to teach them the language so they could talk behind their backs about them growing up. That's the story I am told by them (not sure it's true though). But like most 2nd & 3rd generation Americans from non-English speaking nations, we lose our parents mother tongue.
      I myself actually do have Portuguese (from Porto, but not much), but I don't speak it. My mother did, but she mostly spoke to us in Spanish (she is from Mexico) and English growing up.
      I have never seen anyone growing up on the Garden Island speaking Portuguese. For that matter, not even Japanese from my Japanese-American friends. The only language I heard outside of English is Tagalog (or Ilokano) & Hawaiian, but then I only know the dirty words.
      We spoke mostly Pidgin, a hybrid of English & Hawaiian sprinkled with Filipino & Japanese growing up. I hear that only on the Westside of Kauai is this even spoken anymore.
      Thanks for the video tip!
      May God bless you, your partner, & your family this Eastertide!

    When I look on trip advisor everyone says Polihale is not swimmable? Is there a particular spot that’s calm? Also, someone said it was closed back in October, do you happen to know if it’s reopened?

    • @YourHostJ
      @YourHostJ  3 роки тому +1

      Aloha! There is actually a part that is swimmable and a lagoon so it's protected from the waves. You want to head to the South end of the beach.
      You're completely right - It is actually still currently closed and I should've mentioned that in my video. To be honest, it slipped my mind. They keep saying they will reopen in a couple of weeks, but that was back in September!
      It was mainly due to illegal camping and leaving trash behind. It was really bad and became hazardous due to Covid. They never have officials checking out the place so it just got out of hand. I hope they reopen soon though and everyone respects the rules and land.

      Almost every beach on island has days too rough to swim. Talk to the lifeguards-don’t think you are bothering them, they welcome your questions to keep you safe. You have to be flexible with your plans here, as the weather can change hourly.

      @@YourHostJ im born and raised on Niihau but live on kauai today & have been since age 7 my grandparents come from all over kauai & growing up on the island it was sooo different then than what it is today. Everyone knew each other everyone took care of one another And yes i truly agree with you that everyone should be respectful and open minded all over the island but alot of people that have just moved in within the past 15 years some of them have no idea about our aina (home) and they think its ok to bring their haole (foreign) ways here. Comming from experience i have seen disrespect from haoles (foreigners) and majority of them are tourists. And eventually tourists see beauty and they decide to move here and forget that this is already someone’s home. Anyways my point is just as u mentioned it. If your gonna come here to kauai be respectful and open minded. And pratice aloha. Thats the reason why kauai is the way that it is. We live aloha out here.

      I truly appreciate and respect your input. My parents came with my grandparents to America when my mom was 10ish and my father was in his 20s. We traveled back and forth from America and the Azores frequently and my children were both born in Portugal. I've understood from a young age to be respectful of people and their cultures.
      I'm sure you are aware that many Azorians actually migrated to Kauai to work on the sugar plantations a long time ago. They had a Portugal Day I attended some years ago at the Lihue Museum and it was really amazing to meet so many locals and learn so much from them and the history of Kauai. So thank you for also sharing your story and please know I make these videos about the different areas of the island for informational purposes only. I'm definitely no professional and I only know a little.
      I don't know if you would ever be interested in having your own channel? It seems like you would be great at explaining Kauai's history and the Hawaiian culture so you can educate people. Just a thought. Sorry for rambling. Thank you ❤️

      Lot more kingdom people as well. West side is less accepting of howlies. West side also has alot more drugs and homeless, which probably affects how people accept strangers. West side is the only part of the island where I have been threatened, also part of the island that I have been refused service. In Wiamea, my sister needed to use a restroom and none of the shops would let her use theirs. One shop made her buy a shirt and then the restroom was flooded. It is very old school. When I was looking for homes, the agent refused to show places west of hanepepe, because the deals were always complicated as potential deeded owners came out of the woodwork.
