Have you tried using just grease? That should help keep your hair moisturized for however long you plan to keep them in and should take the flyaways. Grease is all I use for mine and they last for month, although I do reapply grease to the ends for moisture.
It’s probably split ends. Nothing like silk wrap really helps, sure it keeps your hair neat but your hair is frizzy because split ends always makes your hair frizzy as it separates from the healthy hair. Try dusting your hair.
Maybe you should try braiding at the root like 3-4 times and then switch to twists, my sister has more tighter coils and ever since she did that, her roots didn't get puffy/frizzy as quick as it did

Keep your hair moisturized and moisturize your hair when you wear protective hairstyles and moisturize it when you take it down to avoid breakage. Also massage your scalp to speed hair growth. And do protective hairstyles for at least every 2 weeks
Moisturize your hair when you do protective hairstyles and when you take it down to avoid breakage, deep conditioning hair at least 2 days a week, massage your scalp for at least 4 minutes to speed up hair growth, and leave your hair alone

Apply some gel at your roots to get your hair to stay in place then braid the roots about 4 times and then twist it
